HID lamps are often used in street lighting, and shop display lighting. They require control circuitry, and often take many minutes to warm up making them less useful for indoor at home.

The heat is only "wasted" in summer and outdoors. But during summer less artificial light is needed. It's sad that governments intervene, and don't allow to choose the best device for the given application. Light directed toward the usually white ceiling is not always a loss, as it eliminates sharp shadows Incandescent lights in halogen atmosphere have somewhat longer lifetime, but spectrum similar to conventional lightbulbs. The peaky spectrum of fluorescent lights makes some objects change color or lose detail, even though the total light given off is higher when the bulb is viewed at a distance.

you got the energy efficiency wrong. Actually incadescent efficiency is only about 3-4 %, CFL is about 15 %, and LED-s 25-35(depending on the manufacturer and when it was made). The best of LED-s are about 10 times more efficient than incadescent lamps, that would mean their efficiency is almost 100 %, which is impossible, concidering that they also produce some heat(far less than the other 2 but still)

Why is this even a debate? If a CFL is $1 and available in different color temps, that seems like a good deal to me. The ramping up of light in CFLs can actually be useful to allow your eyes to adjust to the sudden brightness when turned on. The bases of some cheap LEDs get VERY hot so they are not as efficient as some people believe. CFLs get hot too but mostly the spiral part that is better exposed to air, not "trapped" in the fixture where the heat can build up.

30% efficiency of an LED? no way man they are much more efficient.
@dancoulson65799 жыл бұрын
+chems LED's are better than 30%, but for the bulb as a whole, you must also consider control circuitry. In each LED bulb, there is a circuit which much step down and rectify mains voltage, and then offer current regulated supply to the LED's. This is where most of the wasted heat comes from in LED bulbs. But again, looking purely at the LED's themselves, if driven correctly are much better.

Not a surprise actually. Buying cheap led light bulbs off ebay from Chinese suppliers is pretty risky. Not only have they not been tested to meet with electrical safety standards (UL etc) the components used are naturally cheap and generally unreliable. Plus you may not get a warranty. Quality led bulbs DO last 50,000hrs and up. I suggest buying bulbs from a retailer that offers a money back warranty.

I tried an LED bulb but wasn't happy, the price didn't justify the longevity(mine only lasted one year). I'm sold on CFL because they a relatively inexpensive and use 75% less watts than incandescent, CFL's also generates about 66% less heat than incandescent. CFL's come in dimmable and 3-way bulbs now(Feit Electric), they also come in 2700-5000K color temperature. CFL's are great for areas where you leave the light on long-term(front porch, kitchen, table lamp) but are not recommended for short-term(closet, side porch) or vibration(garage door opener).

I’ve concluded that it’s hard to beat the value offered by modern LEDs. Not only are their prices getting more affordable every day, they also lasts up to decades longer than the competition. With soft and warm white hues that mimic the glow of traditional incandescent bulbs, the ability to use some models with a dimmer switch, and their instantaneous illumination, LEDs are simply a better option around the house than CFLs.
@stop5gandled7094 жыл бұрын
LEDs only last longer than incandescent bulbs because they were deliberately designed to fail after 1000hrs. It's called planned obsolescence. But even at that, LEDs don't last nearly as long as claimed. If made properly, Incandescents could easily beat LEDs at longevity. Ok. Not sure where my comment went. However, Ill just make my point and back it up. First... its the consumers choice and not the governments just on principle alone. Thats how it should be. Second of all someone mentioned concerns about populations consuming more and more energy. Ok... so lets go with that. If the earth overpopulates and at some point not enough energy can be produced on earth then guess what.... we go to space. I was going to just reply earlier but could not find my comment. I just want to make something clear to all the greens out there bent on regulating how much electricity I use. First its not your right to do so. That should be clear to you from the start. But Ill humor you. Your afraid that the more electricity we use the more we will destroy all those animal habitats. I know thats what this is really about. Ill humor you. You really think the only way to solve this is to one way or another regulate how much I can use my own electricity? You really think that regulating the size of my screen or the type of light bulb I use is the only solution to your problem? Guess what. Its not. When we get out there and start mining asteroids and gathering helium 3 at saturn and mining ceres and other dead moons in the solar system and gathering hydrogen from Jupiter you greens will never have to worry about every last inch of forest vanishing ever again. Your planet killing boogy man will be gone and you will have to find a different boogy man. Good luck.

+Christopher Guzman 1000h of an incandescent light bulb @40W (weak bulbs) is 40kW of electricity, or about 4$. A LED or CFL bulb would cost less than 1$ to run for the same amount of time. Then you replace it 4 times, and get 3$ difference, times 4 = 12$, plus the cost of 5 light bulbs, equals MUCH more than CFL costs. Which means that it saves money. As for LED - I call bullshit on the argument that the ceiling gets illuminated which is lost light. The ceiling is white, which means that it reflects the majority of the light, making a nice ambient light, that's not as harsh as direct projected LED light. So LEDs are harder to justify economically. But maybe in 10 years you get your money back. The main advantage of LED compared to CFL is that you can connect it to a regulator, and smoothly regulate the intensity of the light. You can't do that with CFL. I'd use LED bulbs, place them horizontally, in a circle, so they light up the walls, ceiling and floor. I'd add a bulb to light directly downwards to avoid an unpleasant blind spot. CFL aren't safe. I accidentally broke 2 of them. And even if the mercury wasn't a problem, having thousands of thin glass shards covered in phosphorus, all over the carpet was definitely something I'd rather avoid. But if I need a compact and simple source of omnidirectional light - CFL it is.

MasterMorality Master you're asking for opinions from a youtuber you don't know. I can tell you to start selling rocks for a living. But seriously, my opinion is that LEDs are "hot" only when they're improving. Once the market is saturated and everyone is on LEDs, and not much improvement is done on them, there will be no demand, or at least the same demand as there is for stuff like other stuff that lasts forever. Right now the demand is high because everyone is buying them to replace existing lights. And many hesitate because they're expensive, and too big for the light they emit. They'll become cheaper, and more size-efficient. So... do what you think is good for you.

@warrax1115 жыл бұрын
no, they made them to break, so they consume less power and have bigger efficiency. First light bulbs were very dim, while consumed large amounts of energy. They've calculated, that when they make the filament thicker, effectivity is going down, and it actually burns so much power over years, that it's more cheap to make filament thinner and replace them by small cost every year. It also saved enviroment, as power was produced mainly with coal in past. It saved a lot enviroment. Example, if they would made filament thicker, for same light source, it would eat more energy, than is cost of new light bulb. (about 1$). Also saves the enviroment. They decided , that most effecitve was to make it so thin, as they are , about 1000 hours of lifespan. You then pay $1 for new light bulb, but actualy, you save more than 1$ over year on electricity bill. Just count 1000 hours * 60W = 60 KW. If you make filament thicker, for same light you need to burn 70W. Its 70KW. 10KW differance. 10KWH actually costs more, than new bulb.
