April 27, 1969 Fillmore West
San Francisco, CA
Lively & inventive take on some covers. Robert borrows lyrics from a lot of places in this one. This was a staple of their early shows, as it was quite the improv.

This song quickly morphs into "Fresh Garbage" by Spirit. There is a little bit of "Cat's Squirrel" in there. I'm a Man (Mannish Boy) Bo Diddley/Muddy Waters, "Maybelline" by Chuck Berry. before it returns back to "As Long As I Have You."

I like the rawness of early Led Zeppelin. They were still developing their style and perfecting it. They took chances and that is why they stood out from many other bands. Kind of like Hendrix and Jeff Beck they also stood out at that time. Love this stuff.

Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac released an incredible song with a lot of this feel sound and riff called 'The Green Manalishi' about six months after this. Judas Priest covered that. These musicians all learned from each other. A good version can be found on Mick Fleetwood's Peter Green tribute CD/DVD with ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons on lead. This version of the song never quite made it onto vinyl which is a shame as it rocks. The early Zeppelin sets were loaded with all sorts of things as they only had one album of their own stuff at that point. Zeppelin would have known the Garnet Mimms version and built on that. great song have a listen. This also added to the imperative to expand the numbers they had. Good example Dazed and Confused. Good post thanks!

Thanks for posting this creative gem. When Jimmy holds that long note, at 10:38, I almost melt. Sadly he chose to never do this again in Zep performances, in any song. While the Fillmore West show from the 27th. is better sounding, I slightly prefer the version of this jam piece from the Winterland show the day earlier on the 26th. Though not as better sounding. In those early years I feel they had a lot more adventure in their shows. Before their play list became pat.
@paulbrecht1613

I thought he did that feedback thing on this song often, as a transition. I agree, this is not the best version of this improv. If you like some of Jimmy's early antics, I just put this one up, which is a different mix/take of Whole Lotta Love (studio). Give it a listen all the way through, you'll never hear the song the same again, even when listening to the official release... kzbin.info/www/bejne/e4PcgHSehNVrrKM

@@paulbrecht1613 Yes, I should have said this is the only song (combination), where Jimmy plays that long held note. As far as I know, he never used this effect in any other song. Hardly ever heard any other guitarist do this either. Not Clapton or Beck. Only Leslie West live at his special intro to "Roll Over Beethoven", on LP "Flowers Of Evil". Plus Dave Edmunds on the studio lp "Blues Helping", on the song of that same name, when he was starting out in a band named "Love Sculpture". Quite an attention getter. I'll have to check out that WWL version you mentioned. Thanx.

not familiar w/ that particular boot, but, they played this improv a lot early on, in '69. If the show was from any of those shows, yeah, it could have been included on there. Cool to hear such a clean recording from this era of LZ, yet I don't favor the noisy atonal Page solos as a whole. Like when I listen to versions of Dazed and Confused from '69-'73, I enjoy the melodic sections much more. If I want to hear atonal noise, I prefer how bands like Pink Floyd and the Grateful Dead approached that in the late 60's.

This is the thing...I had attended 2 previous L Z concerts that were ok. During that 3rd concert, SRTS, Page starts waving his hands over this anttenna attached to some weird electronic rectifier thing creating a reverb feedback(??). Closer his hands waved over the anttenna louder the noise. He's doing this during some jamming. Then he pulls out a violin bow and starts strumming his guitar w/ it, making noise. Page keeps this up until the horse hair breaks at 1 end & now he's whipping the guitar strings w/ it. Whatever this stunt was it wasn't music. So I went to sleep. Worked up to Black Dog. Then Bonham starts his solo.during which he tosses his sticks & starts playing his drums w/ bare hands, bongo/conga style, including the cymbals. Rediculous. Now me being a wannabe drummer said that was it. No mo Zep concerts fo me. Too many gimmicks. I have Zep's How the West Was Won cd. Some of it was recorded at the LA Forum, so I mite have been there. But it's not bad but it's not that spectacular either. And dont get me started w/ Neil Young & Crazy Horse.🤫🤨😄

I'm so surprised at how dated this sounds, and it made me wonder; if I heard Led Zeppelin (debut album) for the first time today, would it also sound as dated as this sounds? I'm so used to that album (and all of LZ's albums, really) that I probably don't notice how dated it sounds. I love the unrestrained vocals of Plant, but it's easy to understand how his voice didn't hold up much past 1972. If he was doing this almost every day and night since 1968, it's no surprise he damaged his voice in just a few years.
@paulbrecht1613
@paulbrecht1613 11 ай бұрын
there's probably a lot to consider... this being a live recording - unofficial bootleg, doesn't have the perks of studio recording. The track is an improv that they did day-after-day & never the same way twice... back, in this period, LZ were doing multiple shows a day, listed as matinee & evening shows. So, Plant was really working it in these early days. Then, add on top of that, singing through sickness, he definitely did a number on his voice. It also does not help to smoke & drink. In the early days, doing the dual club dates, they couldn't afford to postpone shows due to illness. Later on, when they got to arenas & stadiums, they did 1 long show, many x's 3hrs long. At that point, they had to pick & choose their songs, by what Plant could handle on a night-by-night rigor...

Absolutely, and this performance is an example. In the previous two nights' shows at Winterland Plant was amazing, hitting notes at the top of his range but killing it. Here at the end of the San Francisco run he's still great, but has to be a lot more careful. This is a raw but very creative performance though, with completely different improvs over the basic structure from the previous and future versions. I do believe that this is the first night, or at least Page's first full night using the Les Paul. The giveaway is the distinct sound of three different pickups. His Telecaster had three different tones, one of which is out of phase, but he almost never used any but the bridge position, presumably because of feedback issues with the Telecaster lipstick pickup. He switches sounds in this show like crazy, like he's let off the leash, ha ha.

Your nuts. He is still doing it in his mid seventies. Get A grip.

I don’t think their studio material sounds dated whatsoever- the sound and production is timeless. There are producers to this day that cannot match the studio production of those albums from 50 years ago…

They might be sabotaging real ace pitchers because homeruns are more exciting to watch. Where's Barry Bonds when you need him?

All that brilliant instrumental work spoiled by Plant's whining, high-pitch voice.

I wonder why Jimmy always started playing something that sounded good. But then became sloppy.

You are insane. Young plant was the best vocalist the world ever knew. Out of every hundred people there is always one of you . Somebody's gotta like Sean Cassidy voice .
