Jimmy Page is a genius.

If you were in high school when Led Zeppelin IV came out, you know the whole album, it was a masterpiece. We had the Beatles’ Abbey Road, Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main Street from The Rolling Stones, Who’s Next, Bob Dylan’s Blood on the Tracks, Humble Pie’s Smokin, J. Girls Full House, Deep Purple Machine Head, Simon and Garfunkel Bridge over Trouble Waters, Carol King’s Tapestry, Yes’ Close to the Edge, Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust, George Harrison All Things Must Pass, a Wink is as Good as a Nod to a Blind Horse from Faces. Deja Vu CSN&Y. It was a time of great music.

I play most of this differently… In the opening riff on the G note I think Jimmy does the Whole Lotta Love trick where he plays and bends the G note on 5th fret 4th string (D string) along with the open G string to give that tension/dissonance… For the first octave part, I think you should let the Open A string ring thru all the octaves including the E (open) octave. For the second octave part, I don’t use octaves at all, but rather each chord is either a major or a minor third played on the 3rd and 4th strings with the open A string ringing thru all of it

Glad to see a new video and it is awesome as usual. Thanks

I love that song. To me it represents the capstone in the arc of their career, marrying the sexual power drive of their early classic, "Whole Lotta Love," with the ethereal chord progressions of their latterday epic, "Kashmir." It doesn't hurt that it also shows how they constantly challenged themselves with unique time signatures...this was so challenging that they only played it live as Led Zeppelin twice. It was so difficult - they couldn't figure out how to count the dammed thing in - that they had to take a break, during which Bonzo slammed out a frustration rip resulting in the writing of "Rock and Roll" in about 15 minutes. Then Bonzo slammed a pint, took two sticks in each hand, counted it out (you can hear it on the rough cut: "1-2-3-4-5-6-1-2-3-1") and whipped out this song... kzbin.info/www/bejne/boKXkndvoa2ErdUsi=FLVSjeefc334jUWP

Not right. When the opening riff climbs to the 5th fret 4th string and you give a slight bend. Jimmy bends up away from the open G string and plays the G string with it, NOT the open A. Bending the fretted G and playing it with the open G make them slightly out of tune with each other and creates that cool smear. Same technique as on Whole Lotta Love.

good call, as shown at :16 of the page/plant unledded, he's clearly doing an upstroke, with a slight up bend, although the A still may be struck, tough to tell, but good call... however, to say "not right" is a blanket response... my focus was the counting... good point on the note, but try creative criticism rather than being abrupt. We're trying to build a community, trying to help each other, maybe try being a member rather than a critic... plus the content is free... we'd love to see your video when it's up!

@@GuitarNinjas only prompted by your click bait title The Real (right?) Way to play....
@GuitarNinjas2 жыл бұрын
@@jeffhutchins6874 Only Jimmy plays it "right", it's impossible to know exactly how it's done unless you're him. As explained in other videos, my definition of "real" is more in the emotional aspect of the performance and the counting. Again, just trying to give people free content and hopefully learn something...so clickbait??? Nah, just my own version of what I think is "real". Thanks again for sharing your insights, we'd love to see a video of you teaching it! Let us know when it's up and we'll promote it!

Actually, even better, would you be interested in doing a live lesson on the channel to show your technique on how to play the piece? We'd love to see you teach it, you made some great points! Just let us know, we'd love to have you on!

Called "Four Sticks" because Bonzo played the song holding two sticks in each handle while recording.

Fantastic video. Very clear and instructive especially on how to count it. Apparently Led Zep had lots of problems with the track and played it live rarely. 👏👏👏💯💯

Wrong. Wrong! WRONG!! All bloody wro..........just kidding. Cool vid. (I saw "Not right." dude's comment and thought I'd comment in kind. 😂) I once saw a tab book (I think) that said to include the high e string octave of the chords in the b section and bridge. So, 5x7xx5 ( this shape on all chords in the section) I think is how they notated it. It's tough to do, though. And I'm not saying it's right. Try it out and tell me what you think. And again, Wrong! Wrong! Wrong!! 😂 Cheers

LOL! Best comment of the year so far! I don't understand why people have to say things are wrong.. it's sound... LOL. I tried this via the tab and didn't find it functional, nor did I think Page would use a voicing like this. Thanks for your "wrong" reply, lol!! Cheers! Thanks for watching.

Is it common to play octaves using the thumb like Jimmy did?

Depending on your style of play, hand size, and guitar neck, yes or no! I like the first finger grip!

Man. Not a fan of the Zep? Jack White recently said something to the effect of: "I just can't trust anyone who says they don't like Zeppelin." I have to agree. A person who doesn't like Zeppelin is essentially a different species as far as musical sensibilities and instincts are concerned. 😉 -edit- I just realized that there are at least three others (thumbs up) on this planet that agree with you. 😳 I didn't imagine that could be possible. Sheesh!

@@chraffis Zeppelin spent 40 years in court winning and loosing royalty cases.. Ottis Wilson just settled in 2018...long since dead.. Muddy Waters.. The list goes on and on.. Remember when they got tossed out of the rock and roll hall of Fame . Zeppelin was over played in my early years before I became a guitar player.... Can't trust a band that can't give credit where it's due... I did say they have great rythms to learn... Just not a fan of thieves

what you're counting as beat 3 should be the down beat on that main riff.
@GuitarNinjas2 жыл бұрын
Ashford, are you suggesting a measure of 2 followed by a measure of 3? I consulted with multiple drummers about this and the overwhelming consensus was counting in 5. Especially because this is off of Zepp 4 where measures of 5 were also used in Black Dog.
@ashfordwyrd74582 жыл бұрын
I'm suggesting counting the riff as 4 5 1 &of2 instead of 1 2 3 &of4 that way you don't need any messy 2 or 4 beat bars, just 5 and 6
