So great to hear you sing the praises of In the Light. I first heard that track when I was 12 - back in 1981, and it still enthralls me. It's a mystery to me why it's so overlooked.

Stairway to Heaven is also famously overplayed to death a million times over as we all know. Radio just plays the first side of Zeppelin four and Kashmir to death, thank God they’re not burning out the real good stuff

@@abigaildevoe Followed immediately by Living Loving Maid, album style. It’s always interesting to me that it seems to have become an unspoken rule with radio - forged undoubtedly in the 70s by DJ habits - to do a two-fer. Much like We Will Rock You into We Are the Champions. I think it’s merely an old convention due to the fact that those songs seem to have extremely brief space between them on the vinyl for some reason. Although DJs spinning albums on air is long dead save perhaps college radio or small stations, it’s a habit that just stuck.

@@abigaildevoe It was brilliant. I actually started to do the store outside the sleeve thing a year ago, but reverted when I realized it was decreasing my storage space. Side note. There's a well known company that sells a round bottomed static free 2 mil sleeve that is perfect slipping into original paper sleeves and overtly snug jacket situations like this. I don't want to say the name. Lets just say it rhymes with Risk Leapers.

@@Frank_nwobhm yeah I use those too. They're great. But that said, the MSFL ones Abby uses will slide just fine into most liners too - certainly the heavy duty ones. I just keep them in there and slide the record out without removing the protective liner - solves the creasing problem.

I always thought that the cover of this album is one of the best ever, loved playing with the windows as I listened to the songs. Interesting tidbit: Jeff Buckley’s favourite band and biggest musical influence was Led Zeppelin. The first album that he ever owned was Physical Graffiti. The apartment building on the cover of said album is on the same street, just doors away, from where Jeff regularly played and recorded his first EP, Live at Sin-e.

@@abigaildevoe Jeff also said in an early interview that he wanted to make an album that would make people forget about Led Zeppelin II. On the night that he drowned, Jeff was singing along to the opening track on said album - which was playing on his friend’s boombox - just moments before he disappeared, under the waves. Have you heard his covers of Night Flight? The extended version from the album, You and I, includes Jeff giving a shoutout to each member of Led Zeppelin, while talking about how much the song meant to him. Also, in a live rendition of The Way Young Lovers Do, during a concert in Germany, circa 1995, Jeff incorporated a really cool segue of Led Zeppelin’s Four Sticks, in the intro.

Hi Abby, I so appreciate all the hard work, and research you put into all your videos ! And that goes for your make up,and fashions ! Led Zeppelin were "Rock Gods" in my eyes, I saw them at Madison Square Garden twice. Jimmy Page was a "Merlin" type Magician on stage, dressed in black velvet pants and jacket embroidered with silver sequins of Astrological planets, and signs ! His guitar made sounds I never heard before, and when he got the violin bow out the crowd went wild ! He had "Hypnotized" the audience, and we LOVED it ! Robert Plant was a blond, god from an ancient myth, with a voice that made us believe anything he sang about ! John Bonham The constant beat of excitement,JPJ,the quiet gentlemen who played such an ethereal sound on keyboards. They were everything to us ! Physical Graffiti was not my favorite album though...Led Zeppelin III is my favorite,so artistic, and original. I will always love them !

My favourite album cover art has almost everything to do with that moment of breakaway from the influence of older siblings and claiming something as your own. Never Mind the Bollocks Here's the Sex Pistols with its deliberately ugly colour scheme and ransom note lettering felt like just the explosive breaking point I needed at the time. Still have my (now quite unplayably decrepit) copy from 1977 nestling against the wall in my living room, gauche pink and yellow blocks and all.

I look forward to your future video on Zeppelin and their 'issues' with The Blues. Watching from London UK. P.S. The whole thing with 70s guitar bands abusing underage girls is pure filth. It's crazy just how common that type of behaviour was accepted and encouraged back then.

THIS is the album that changed my young life forever. His copy was an opening g album, Luke 2 and 4 were. Yours is a single jacket. I listened to all 4 sides, all in one sitting. Incredible double album, if half of it is earlier stuff from the prior albums.

... early teenage years (1977 ish, Oxford, UK),...one of my favourite aunts dragged me into a record shop and said 'pick any record you want' .... I picked Led Zeppelin's 'Physical Graffiti' (loved the cover)... probably the best decision I ever made... fell in love with this life changing record... (The Rover...in my top 10 songs ever!!) ... first gig was Zeppelin's second Knebworth show '79.... LP sounds as fresh and exciting today (45 years later) as it did back then.... only other music that has done this for me is Bowie...

That album IS truly special, not only for the music inside but for that unique, creative and mystique design, filled with an abundant amount of trivia. Other than Zepp. 3, there’s just no other cover like it. I don’t have nearly the awesome collection of vinyl that you do but at least I do possess this one. I love your favorite song choices but I really dig the epic “ In my time of Dying. “ And that one was never burned out because it was too long to get any airplay, making it even more special for myself. First heard this in 1984 when visiting my French penpal near Bordeaux when I was 15. Her older male cousin lived round the corner in a shabby house and he'd repair motorbikes and stuff. I think she was the "annoying younger cousin who comes to hang out sometimes" and she took me along. He asked what music I liked and said I'd been getting into Led Zeppelin. At this point I had only heard my younger brother's copies of the first 4 LPs (he didn't have a new wave/ Bowie habit to support like I did. He started young with LZ1 when he was about 12) - and he put "Physical Graffiti" on. I knew right away I had to have a copy - it sounded even better than the other Zeppelin I'd heard. Being just 15 I was constantly broke and couldn't afford all the records I wanted, even though ALL of my money went on records - so it would be another few years till I actually did get a copy - it was usually in the "this or 3 other records" price level. I eventually found a second hand copy in about 1988 - years later Discogs revealed it to be a first pressing. I only have this and LZ1 on vinyl - but I do have the CD box set. Where am I going with this? Well - after your LA Woman video last week that makes 2 consecutive videos on your channel covering pretty much the entirety of the English-language music I associate with my various stays in France. Unusual coincidence.

Your insight is illuminating and it's obvious you did your due diligence prior to recording your video. This is my favorite album of theirs. I love every song. It did take me a long time to appreciate some of their more "unzeppelinesque" tunes, but just like most anything else, appreciation comes with time and patience for being my fave, I don't own a copy. Like "Exile On Main Street" it is HARD partying music! I did so many times. Great video, entertaining, informative, and without doubt done by the best dressed and best coiffed in the vinyl community. Thanks Xo

You have great taste in music, Abby. In my opinion, LZ's Physical Graffiti is their best album. There's a lot of cool blues in that album; I particularly like the slide guitar in the album. I have a promo vinyl version of it from when it was first released; it sounds terrific, and it's all analogue! 👍💖🎸😎

Fantastic Abby. Love your reviews and love your taste. I’m amazed you don’t have Forever Changes by Love yet, a favourite of Robert Plant and in my opinion the greatest LP of 1967. Thanks for the review of PG and looking forward to my fave Neil Young next week.

This is one album that has been missing from my collection and one that I haven't heard until yesterday. Bought a 1st UK pressing that was on eBay from the original owner that only had two plays on it. Unfortunately I have to wait 10 days for it because its coming from England.

I bought this record as a teen back then and enjoyed getting into it very much indeed. Side 1 is probably the most exciting Led Zeppelin side on any record. The earlier tracks from other album sessions fit into this record seamlessly. I can think of only one record I enjoyed becoming familiar with more than Physical Graffiti and that was The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway by Prog-era Genesis. Cheers.

Swan Song was the name of an instrumental track Zeppelin were working on at the time but never officially released. (on bootleg) The track eventually is re-written as Midnight Moonlight from the first Firm record.

Okay, part 2 for me now... I wish I could remember everything said in the video because boy I had a bunch of comments to make. But my brain is sort of in limbo today with that weird sleep schedule last night. So I'll touch on what I remember. Near the end, you mentioned not liking Hats Off to Roy Harper. I agree with you there. I always thought that was a weird ending to Zeppelin III. But have you heard the alternate disc from the remastered set for that track? I have to admit, I like it a lot more and I don't stop the track like I do on the regular Zeppelin III LP knowing it's the last song. Ten Years Gone is probably my most favorite song on the Physical Graffiti LPs. "Thinking how it used to be, does she still remember times like these? To think of us again... and I do yeah". The first time I heard those lyrics from the song was somewhere in the 1980s when I was young and a teen. I probably couldn't have been much more than 14 or 16 maybe. And that spoke to me then. It wasn't like I had a long life full of experience with love and heartbreak. But somehow I related to that and now it's more like 40 years gone since I first heard that song. I always liked the way Robert Plant describes this song in the 4/27/1977 Richfield Coliseum (near Cleveland) concert. He starts out by saying the song is about first loves. He says "This song is about first loves, the one you never forget, Ten Years Gone". Even though I never knew that for sure back in the 1980s I felt that way about it. My least favorite Led Zeppelin song, used to be Trampled Underfoot until I heard it live, is Kashmir. That song to me is so plain and non changing for the most part that it bores me. Where's Jimmy Page's guitar solo? I forget how long it is but to me it's too long. I don't hate it. I just don't like it either. But it seems like I'm in the small minority when it comes to Kashmir. Like I mentioned a minute ago, I used to think Trampled Underfoot was too stale and non-changing. And the radio version kind of is. But the live performance of that song, with Jimmy's incredible guitar renditions in the solos (like in the Earl's Court 5/25/75 DVD video of the show), was a totally different song. However, Kashmir always stayed the same and it just was my least favorite in the long run. The one thing so cool about Led Zeppelin, and I'll go into it a little more in a minute, is how the song never remained the same. Except for Kashmir dang it 🤔 One thing I really do like about Led Zeppelin is that they are not perfect in how they play things. Or I guess I should say how they played things? They had errors when they played live but they kept going and turned them into something. Whether it was Page's guitar playing and timing or Plant's vocals, they didn't try to come across like they were perfect and those rough spots just made them that much more of a group of real people playing real music live I always thought. What they played live was made up as they were playing it too most of the time. Sure they had the music they would come back to, and they all worked off of both John Paul Jones and John Bonham's rhythms and beats, but they were making the music up as they were playing it and changing it each night live. So how could it get stale? Except for Kashmir of course haha. I've even seen Jimmy Page in recent years talking about how people wanted him to play certain solos a certain way again and how he has no idea how he did it that night in 1975 and he doubted he could ever do it exactly the same way again. He even mentioned listening to the bootlegs and wondering how he did certain things. It was on the fly and it was badass in most cases! And just the idea that these four musicians could play off of each other and read each other the way they did is incredible to me. And this was really throughout their whole career and not just during Physical Graffiti. But the 1975 Physical Graffiti tour was one of my favorites! Really everything from the Gonzaga 1968 era up through Physical Graffiti was my favorite era of Led Zeppelin. I remember the first time I heard Physical Graffiti. I've mentioned this I think in an earlier post? But for a lot of my preteen years going into my teenage years, my dad had been on an anti rock and roll kick and I missed out on a lot of great music as it was going on at the time. It was from my time being alive but even the music from the time before I was old enough to enjoy it. I love music and have from a real young age. And somewhere between probably 1977 and maybe 198x I wasn't allowed to listen to rock and roll. But somewhere around 1980, I started doing it anyway and I just had to be careful when I did it or where I was at. I never really got exposed to Led Zeppelin a whole lot until probably 1983. And when I came across one of my dad's old Led Zeppelin III 8-track tapes, wow, I was hooked. Too bad they didn't have CDs in those earlier 1980s days because albums were kind of hard to hide. But I started getting all of the Led Zeppelin LP's I could and when I came across Led Zeppelin Physical Graffiti I was surprised. And it grew on me more and more as time went on. I don't know if it was the oppression by my dad and the feelings I had inside as I was becoming a teenager or what? But the music spoke to me and I thought that Physical Graffiti had such a wide range of songs, and feelings, on it that I really, really got into it heavily. I didn't like that modern day, which was most of the 1980s hair metal bands, music most of my friends were listening to and I was going back to the stuff that I had not had a chance to hear. The music from between the late '60s and maybe 1980 was the music I was looking for and loving! And Physical Graffiti was definitely one of my go-to cassette tapes, again easier to hide, and albums I loved listening to. I can't remember currently if it was the Page & Plant 1995 or 1998 tour where they started off with The Wanton Song as the opening song on the tour? Actually, it was 1995. But of course being at multiple shows on both tours in my area, I really liked that start! I didn't like the 1995 tour as much as the 1998 tour but I enjoyed both of them. And what better song to start off with after disappearing for 15 years. In 95, they had too much of that Indian music Eastern influence and the songs did not sound like Led Zeppelin as much. They ruined No Quarter for me on that tour. But in the 1998 tour, and even at the end of the 95 tour when they played in Japan in 1996, they opened up and started playing like Led Zeppelin again. They redeemed themselves with No Quarter in 1998 too. I always thought they should have had John Paul Jones with them and toured as Led Zeppelin during that time period. Even with the late Michael Lee on drums, he did a great job of performing the songs with a very Bonham sound, they really should have included JPJ with them. So why am I talking about this right now? I feel like I'm still waking up haha. A much longer story shortened, I really did love Physical Graffiti and the variety of tracks on it. Down by the Seaside, through the years, came to represent a different time and when people were different to me. How do that rings today especially. "You still do the twist, you find that you remember things that way" type of lyrics when the song picks up really seem to hit home. Even today. Especially today! I would have been 8 years old when Physical Graffiti came out in 75. Custard Pie was a rocking song. I loved In My Time of Dying. That became a 1975 Physical Graffiti staple on their tour. Houses of the Holy had such a cool sound to it as well. Boogie with Stu and just all of the songs were so interesting to me, with the exception of Kashmir, that I spent a lot of time listening to the LPs/tapes / CDs (yes it came as 2 CDs when it was originally released on compact discs) as I was growing up and ever since. And now to have it with the bonus, not really even on bootlegs in most cases, tracks on the companion discs, it's amazing to kick back and listen to those LPs. Which if I don't shut up and quit talking to my phone I'm not going to get to put on and listen to Physical Graffiti before I have to leave today. Anyhow, I still have to proofread this message so I better copy it real quick in case it disappears like things sometimes do as I'm trying to compose a message using Google voice to Text. I've got a lot of proofreading and corrections to do too. I think you picked a great album for this review. I kind of gather you don't get into it quite as much but I think it's possible you might like it a lot more as you occasionally revisit it. It may not have the same meanings or desirability to you Abby? But it sounded like you did enjoy it even though you wished it was shorter haha. In my case, I wish it was a 6 LP set. Shoot, I can't even remember how many LPs it comes to with the companion discs now? But it does still come in the same type of packaging and I think it is just three LPs right now with the remastered version put out a few years ago? Other than dust getting in, I like the top loading record cover design too. I thought it was really weird that when I woke up at 1:00 a.m. I was thinking of putting this record on and listening to some of it this morning. It's kind of strange but I guess coincidences do happen. Had I realized today was going to be a video on this LP set, I definitely would have listened to it. Of course I might not have gone back to sleep again at 5:00 a.m. for a couple of extra hours of much needed sleep either. Thanks for the video. I enjoy them even when I don't always agree with your thoughts like on Kashmir. The cool thing is we both definitely like the album and in years to come you'll probably be looking back on some of your favorites thinking about them and what they did for you like I do today with albums like Physical Graffiti. Brian in Fort Worth 🎶😁

"Down by the Seaside" is apparently a tribute, sort of, to Neil Young and his album "Harvest". Some find a likenes to Young's "Down by the River" but all I can find that is similar is the title. "Down by the River" is very dark and quite far from a seaside resort.
