I love this song; the overdubbing is rich, lush, and tasteful. The tapping is Bonzo pattering on something - no one knows what (the 3 have been asked and no one remembers). Some say he's tapping on an empty guitar case, some say his knees, or a stool/chair and I'm sure there's other theories as well. Personally, I think it's an empty guitar case. I love how the acoustic guitar remains throughout even after the electric guitar comes in and those bass punches are killer. According to Jimmy, that smooth, sustaining violin-like tone you mentioned was achieved by him using the neck pickup on his Les Paul with the treble cut and as well as using a sustain-producing effects unit. There are isolated tracks on KZbin of the acoustic guitar, Jonesy's bass, and I think some of Robert's vocals. Near the end, Jimmy had asked Robert to improvise more lyrics, which is why you can hear him continue through the entire fade out. This is one of their earliest songs where their richness of sound, musicality, and composition shine. It shows a bit of their musical evolution, ingenuity, and confidence to go for something a bit different. Rest assured; you guys are going to have a lot of "favorites" so don't worry about trying to pick just one. Their music is for moods and emotions and you'll find extra meaning in how you apply listening to them.

Many moons ago when I was a teenager I worked nightshifts, few benefits, one being I was the only one in the office...so I could play music aloud. 4am when it gets hard....I would play Led Zep 2 (whole lotta love, lemon song, many more...and THIS). 1971 I was 15 when I first heard this album. My best friend played it for me on his 8 track tape player. I couldn't believe what I was hearing, I had never heard anything like it. We listened to it over and over that night on a tobacco farm in Hinesville Georgia, I was visiting him from Miami Fl. , ( you want to hear it again, "yes"). At the end that night I bought his 8 track tape player, the Led Zeppelin 2 tape for 80.00 dollars, it was all the money I had and I was happy to spend it all on that. Took it back home and played it for months and months . I still love hearing every song on Zeppelin 2. Great reaction you two, you both bring somethings real to your reactions. While I do enjoy modern music, too, my preference is classic rock now. It’s just so much richer than most things today’s artists bring to the table.

Based upon your reaction you might like In My Time of Dying. Ramble On is a fave of mine for literally 45 years. I think it's a masterpiece of a pop song. Critics pooh poohed Jimmy Page's overdub of guitars. This song has something like 16 different guitar tracks layered in, Who cares. Masterpiece.

This is my favorite Led Zepplin song too. Unofficially referred to as "Bilbo's Song" by some, Ramble On is an homage to "The Hobbit" Bilbo Baggins of J.R.R. Tolkien's' Lord of the Rings'. His baby (a girl so fair) is not a girl at all; it's the one ring of power. Bilbo finds it "in the darkest depths of Mordor I met a girl so fair, but Gollum and the evil one (Sauron) crept up and slipped away with her." Misty Mountain Hop is another awesome Tolkien inspired Zep song.

ANd it's true--it's not just me/us bein an old fudy-duddy, but the period of roughly 1965-75 was IT, the PINACLE of rock music! great stuff before and since, but much of what came after, especially, is just crapola, over-produced, sugar puffery, imo.

Very cool - found you guys and watched. Bonham, the drummer, was keeping time by tapping his hands on what sounds like a guitar case, but no one knows. It's a LZ mystery. Jimmy played that beautiful sustain effected guitar solo, that driving acoustic guitar and then was accenting the song randomly with soft clean country blues sounding electric guitar - those clean guitar riffs really pick up in the final verse. Robert singing is incredible and the isolated vocals tracks are available to listen to here YT. In fact, all the parts of this song are available in isolated guitar tracks on YT. The drums come in like thunder and Bonzo kicks those single note bass drum beats - on the upbeat ! Jonesey's bass playing is incredible - that main bass line is so melodic and sweet. He goes into some really complex movements on the bass when the drums kick in and then he unleashes in the outro. The lyrics are a tribute to The Lord of the Rings and Plant directly mentions the Mordor, the evil, cursed lands from LOTR and then mentions Gollum, the creepy cursed character who lives under a mountain, who is obsessed with one of the special rings. "...but Gollum, a-the evil one, crept up and slipped away with her..."

I used to play this very, very loudly in my car back in HS. I had a pair of house speakers hooked up in the back seat and it that clicking drum beat made me think I was blowing the speakers at first. Good times. Lots of Tolkein references in this song if you look at he lyrics. This and the Battle of Evermore are heavily influenced by Tolkien.

Oh my God guys you are taking me so far back when I was 15 my parents bought me a Panasonic quadrasound stereo I laid in the floor of my bedroom one speaker in each corner and I listen to this album and to Pink Floyd into The Moody blues and my wife changed forever my mind opened my creativity started blooming I started thinking for myself taking new adventures mentally and physically. It's the arrangement. Rick Beato breaks down this song . He says it is voice, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, drums and bass sublimely arranged. The percussion is much discussed with a guitar case thought to be the most likely "instrument". Bonzo playing to be part of the whole which is the other side of his greatness -knowing when to dazzle and when to hold back.

Couldn't wait to see what you both thought of this one! For decades I said I couldn't possibly pick a favorite Zeppelin song. I would've been hard pressed to even pick a top 5. But in the last couple of years I've realized that "Ramble On" is the one that has consistently played on my emotions & that if I could only hear ONE of their songs ever again...this is the one I'd have to listen to for the last time. It has always transported me to a faraway place in another distant time. And it still does. Always have to listen with my eyes closed while being very still, letting it take me away. Just came across y'all for the first time. You guys are fun! AND perceptive--glad you were diggin on the bass line(s) and even the lyrics as well! This was played a lot on the radio in the late 70's, so it was one of my many "gateway" Zeppelin songs that led me on to love ALL their stuff! Zeppelin songs are mostly about just a few topics. Sex, Vikings, Hobbits and Vikings having sex with Hobbits.

They were huge JR Tolkien fans! Author of The Hobbit and Lord of The Rings! It doesn't surprise me that a genius author would inspire not just this hit of Led Zeppelin but other hits of theirs too!! They are genius!!!

I met a girl in Mordor, its Lord of the rings things as in the book. Mr Baggins going on a ramble and finding/stealing/tricking Gollum into getting the ring was. the inspiration for the song. The later the albums they get the more bits of folk music seems to seep in.
