When people tell you to listen to the studio version first, it's because their studio production was so well done, that they are some of the best ever, in my opinion. Multi-tracking had never been used so masterfully before Zeppelin, and rarely since. So, their live performances are just different, because you can't produce all the elements of the studio version with just four guys. The guitar also tends to be pretty brash live, and more lush in the studio. So studio and live with Zeppelin are two different animals... They're both great, but hearing the studio version first is usually best. Also the mid-70s live stuff is the best.

Thanks! This is my favorite Led Zep song. The difference between a dam and a levee is this: a dam is built to hold back water to form a pond, lake, reservoir, etc., so constantly has water against it. For the most part a levee is a flood control structure built along the sides of rivers so that when there is excessive rain and the river tops its banks the levee prevents the water from spreading into the bottomlands, which can be several miles wide on each side of the river. So a levee only has water against it when there is flooding--98% of the time it is high and dry. The levee system that failed in New Orleans is atypical since it is more complex to protect an urban area below sea level, the vast majority of the levee systems protect the rich farmland of alluvial flood plains--which in the Mississippi River valley are massive. That is what this song is about--the great flood of 1927. This flood was the worse on the lower Mississippi--in what was called the Delta--west Mississippi, east Arkansas and eastern and southern Louisiana. Home of the Delta blues of which the original of this song is a good example. There was a flood to rival it in 1993 on the upper Mississippi, I remember well video on the TV news showing a levee break and a house in the flood's path floating away on the swift current. So anyone who lives near a river knows exactly what kind of doom is impending "when the levee breaks".

@The_Kiosk3 жыл бұрын
This song was originally recorded in the great depression and was literally about a huge flood. The style of music was called Delta blues because it came out of the Mississippi River Delta culture. Come the 1960s, and the levee becomes a metaphor for things like Vietnam, or whatever you think it represents. For me, it's the way the world is and the dire straits we all face and the corrupt government. The rain is the build up of public awareness and outcry and the levee is the denial that there's anything wrong. If it keeps on raining, levees going to break. Crying won't help you, praying won't do you no good. When the levee breaks you'll have no place to stand.😎
@ROMsquad3 жыл бұрын
So I was right when I said it had double meaning too like when the cap hits the fan with political undertones
@heliotropezzz3333 жыл бұрын
* 'no place to stay'. I don't interpret it that way because the rain is the enemy of the people as it will break the levee and permanently displace people. This happened much more recently too in Louisiana with hurricane Katrina in 2005 which broke the levees. Maybe there's a double meaning but it's not coming to me easily. I suppose the levee could be the status quo or the economy and the rain could be the pressures that are going to cause an economic depression.
@The_Kiosk3 жыл бұрын
@RDiss Or Mc pretty much. A Perfect Circle also covered this for an album of protest songs called eMOTIVE. @Helen Trope I was using the lyrics to the Memphis Minnie version. It's a standard so things get mutated when others cover the song, I guess.

Kudos!! As with a lot of Zeppelin songs and art in general, there's usually a double meaning. Art is not just "Art", it's an expression of the creators thoughts and feelings. And it is not just beauty of it, but also the meaning of it that is up to the "eye of the beholder".... Example: Robert Plant still says to this day, that the meaning of "Stairway To Heaven" changes for him, and the meaning of it depends on which day you ask him.... Love it!!!!!!

"When The Levee Breaks" is about The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927, the most destructive river flood in the history of the US. The flood inundated 27,000 sq. miles, and the destruction was so bad that it literally made many homes disappear under 30 feet of water, consequently displacing thousands upon thousands of people, especially poor blacks, many of whom migrated north to cities like Chicago (hence the Chicago reference in the song). Zeppelin (and especially Plant) was HEAVILY influenced by old American blues artists, particularly from the Mississippi Delta region, to cities like Memphis (Plant was also heavily influenced by Elvis), etc. Anything to do with the blues or events surrounding the Delta, Plant and Zeppelin were on it BIG TIME.

The drums in this are some of the most sampled in early hip hop. There's reverse echo added to the harmonica and phasing added to the vocals. In addition to that, the instruments are slowed half a step while the vocals remain the same; this adds to sludgy, heavy groove of the song.

I had no doubt you would like it. One reason you want studio version on this particular song (besides the excellent recorded quality of Bonham because of where they set up and mic'd the drums), is that Robert Plant can't sing and play harmonica at the same time when playing this song live, but his vocals and harmonica are overlapping on this studio version.

The original version of this song was written by Delta blues goddess Memphis Minnie, and the lyric about not having work in the south and thus going to Chicago is about how many black musicians felt back in her time. Many of the original acoustic Delta blues musicians -preWWII- migrated up to Chicago and then started plugging their guitars in, and it was a huge evolution of the blues, spearheaded by people like the great Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf and Willie Dixon...This song is a great history lesson on top of the amazing performance by Zeppelin. Another on point reaction!! Yeah the studio versions give you a crisp sound and all the wonderful production values that are put into the LZ studio recordings, but LIVE you get to see and or hear the passion and the wonderful improvisation. Whenever you hear a harmonica on a LZ tune- it is Robert Plant. Jimmy plays a pretty mean harmonica too but not in any LZ recording that I know of - only in session work before LZ. This is one of my favorite songs!! The groove that JPJ and Bonzo put down is so trance-like and draws you in and along for the ride - you'll find that on a lot of their tracks. And as you point out - how they circle in and out of the different "motifs" is just so good. This song is actually based on a 1930s country blues song (you pointed out that vibe) by Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe McCoy about the great Mississippi flood of 1927 - here's the original if you're interested kzbin.info/www/bejne/qajLdpRuq9qDbLc There were lots of overdubs in the studio recording that was hard to duplicate live. LZ only played this live a few times in 1975 - no film - just audio (so far). They weren't satisfied that they were creating the sound they wanted live so they dropped it from the set list. However, when Page and Plant got together for No Quarter/Unledded for MTV in 1994 they did do this song with SEVEN musicians to get a sound they were happy with Here's the link to that - kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnq9oGCFprd3jas Please check out In My Time of Dying - live from 1975 - another great LZ blues song - You won't be disappointed - here's the link kzbin.info/www/bejne/roXVgmqsir-mf9E If you're really interested in how Page and Led Zeppelin recorded and got the sound on various tracks - there's a great book by Dave Lewis an uber-fan who has been writing about and chronicling LZ since the late 70s and maintains Tight But Loose - the LZ magazine since the late 70s but now online - tons of wonderful info there. The book is Led Zeppelin The Complete Musical Guide - it doesn't get down into the technical weeds but gives an overview of the recording of their studio albums. Thanks again for getting into their music. I hope you'll continue with them while you're exploring other bands - you've only hit the tip of the iceberg and there's so much more diverse music from them. ☮

I remember the first time I heard Zeppelin. They were Rock Gods! This song! In 1988 I was 13 as of June of 88. I knew a guy (who I married yrs later but didn't last. My daughter lasted though lol) who worked with this older hippy dude in my neighborhood who would tell us kids about his experience at Woodstock. We all called the hippy dude 'Cowboy.' He had a long blonde ponytail and drank a lot. He lived in an apartment above our local Italian Deli called Zitos. He wasn't very friendly. He would yell at us kids and when he had a few too many he would yell on the sidewalk "I was there" referring to him being at Woodstock! The boys would try to irritate him by yelling things at him while whizzing by on their BMX, Huffy and Mongoose bicycles. Anyway my friend 'Joey Bon Jovi' worked with Cowboy digging 'in-ground' pools for Joeys Uncle Ricks Pool Company. Joey would have his radio and one weekend he recorded a special event that WBAB was hosting. I think it was Memorial Day or 4th of July weekend and the local Rock N 🎸 Roll station was alternating back and forth between Zeppelin and the Doors! He recorded as much as he could onto a blank tape. Joey gave me the tape one day and said "Hey, Audrey! Listen to this tape. It will change your life forever!" He was right. When I heard 'When the Levee Breaks, No Quarter, Babe I'm Gonna Leave You, Stairway...., The Lemon Song, Dazed...., Going to California etc etc etc I was completely stunned. I was a "Rock Chick" by the time I was 12 or so. MTV was still playing music all day and all night. Rock n Roll music! I couldn't believe what I was hearing. The guitar solos and the drum solos were incredible. They don't make music like that anymore 😪. It's a bit frustrating and depressing. I don't like this era today. Love you cutting in a verse of lyrics and stopping on it when you think it’s worth it. Really enjoy your insight brother. New fan

Live is where the rubber meets road! L.Z. Are the GOATS. I love al the studio music, but to watch them preform their music is the best! Yep it’s a dam, this is an old blues song from the 20’s about an actual flood. 😎👏👏👏👏👏🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 they cover all genres!

As usual, I loved your reaction. Anything that you listen to from "Mothership" was remastered by Jimmy Page himself.

I suppose, without getting too socio-political about this, there is such a thing as 'folk memory': the means by which the past is known to us without us necessarily needing to do any research. And there also seems to be a type of memory that gets passed down to us through our DNA, as if the experiences of our ancestors are imprinted there. So perhaps when we react to music we are reliving something below the level of actual consciousness. This has been your TED talk...

Love how you've really gotten into this band. Now if it was the 70's and we were tripping acid when this came out 😂

I believe they only played this live one time, iirc. Which says a lot about a band that had so many other great tunes.

Had to see your reaction to my favorite Zeppelin song…love your love for music. You should check out Jinjer, Pisces the live session. They’re a Ukrainian metal band that I discovered watching reaction videos. They’re very musically talented and bring a bit of Jazz, classical and even Raggae to their songs…you’ll love them. They’re singer, Tatiana is very talented.

I got to thinking I should tell you that there is another song for which you must not do your first reaction to the live version. Its a two part song by Grand Funk Railroad. The title is I'm Your Captain/Closer to Home. Its just as epic of a part of rock history as this song is. There are sound effects between parts one and two that help the listener to follow the story. Plus its a beautiful transition, with a change in tempo for a little while. And AFTER you have heard the studio version, someday see it live. The live concert at Shea Stadium was legendary. You will see why the cops were afraid the stands would collapse. But they were also afraid that stopping the concert would spark a riot. So definitely see the studio version first. Then someday down the road, get to the live show.

Just as you said before, Hypnosis, like Kashmir, and No Quarter, the subtle drum/bass changes, create the hypnotic effect. The ending was some great slide guitar. Sound Effects, YES, Relayer check out Sound Chaser, then Gates Of Delirium, the battle of Armageddon in musical format. The electric guitar is the most versatile instrument., been playing for 45 years, I still love it.

So far you have reacted to only two of the holy trinity of the 70s heavy rock. Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and now you need to try Deep Purple. Highway Star would be a good start

Probably mentioned below already. Page was playing the slide, which was very common in the old blues, which is where this song comes from. Towards the end there was some backwards guitar too. Harmonica was of course very common with old blues too.

Watching a video of a live performance is like saying "there's nothing like going to the movies in a theater" which is true, but then saying therefore you prefer watching a recording of the theater screen over watching the 4K blu-ray.

That’s Page playing a slide guitar. For another really great slide performance as well as great drumming check out In My Time Of Dying. I guarantee you will not be disappointed.
