I'll never forget one time in my late teens, a friend of mine was listening to Olivia Newton John's Twist of Fate, and for some unknown reason, the tape got really tight and caused the player to start going backwards. I heard of a study that says that if people hear about a "message" in backwards masking, they're​ more likely to listen for the "message" (if they hadn't heard of the song or accusations before, they wouldn't even notice or hear the "lyrics"). my theory is that some guy with too much time and nothing to do went through a listened to a phrase that sounded sort of like a "satanic message" and spread a rumor. If you notice, the song is literally about how to be a good person and how to get to heaven (In "The Song Remains The Same", they introduce it as a "song of hope"). I'm a Christian and I don't think they were Satanists. I think they accidentally created one of the most controversial songs of all time.

My friend and I reversed this on a vinyl LP 30 years ago. We spent quite a bit of time on it. It IS there, and it is not "back masking". Back masking is when someone INTENTIONALLY puts words in so you will hear them if you spin the record backwards. This is NOT what is happening in Stairway to Heaven. Robert Plant is merely singing the lyrics of the song. His vocalizations and singing style, along with the forward lyrics, are producing a subconscious message when the record is spun in reverse. The very fact that we can decipher anything BUT gibberish when a record is played backwards shows that there is something to this - all the more when we can hear a coherent phrase or sentence. What is particularly compelling in the verse presented in the video, is that if you break down the lyrics in forward and in reverse, you will see that when played forward the lyrics present a choice, and then in reverse, the choice is made clear. The thoughts we hear in forward and reverse are DIRECTLY related to each other. In forward the lyrics state: "...yes there are two PATHS you can go by, but in the long run, there's still time to change the road you're on." - In reverse, the exact same lyrics state: "the one will be the PATH, what makes me sad, whose power is satan..." There are several reverse messages in Stairway to Heaven, not just the one in the video. Check out the very famous final lyrical passage of the song in reverse.
