Ahead of their time...the harmonica track was recorded, then played backwards with echo. The drums were recorded in the lobby of an old mansion with microphones hanging from the second floor staircase. The guitar tracks were recorded, then the tempo was altered. This is why Led Zeppelin rarely played this song live. And when they did it wasn't the same.

There's an interesting anecdote about those drums. Zep had rented a big house to record and had moved Bonham's drum kit temporarily into the stairwell as they were settling in. Bonzo at some point started pounding away just to pass the time, and it created this tremendous echo, so they decided to record right there in the stairwell.

Written by Memphis Minnie, with her then husband Kansas Joe in 1929. The 1927 Mississippi Delta Flood defeated the cotton field levees, leaving poor Black share cropper families out of work, and no harvest to sell. Deep water went 80 miles inland to the east. People had to build rafts. Future president Herbert Hoover was Commerce Secretary, and formed federal labor camps to keep local labor working on the levee rebuilding. A lot of incidents of violence, and sabotage of the new levees. Finally, with levees repaired, many Black people went north to Chicago, like the song says. On the back of Led Zep IV, Memphis Minnie is listed as a band member! She ended up old & alone, then fans lobbied for Minnie to be paid for her lyrics.

1971 I was only 7years old and probably hearing Marc Bolans T Rex and David Bowie and the starts of Glam Rock. I came to Led Zeppelin later in life and I eventually stumbled upon this track. I’ve thought long and hard about this song and album. We have four individuals who are gifted beyond imagination coming together at the height of their abilities and reworked this blues song , taking it to outer space. The groove on this song is utterly fantastic. And became the blueprint for all serious bands thereafter. Sit back and take it in.

I was hooked; especially Led Zeppelin. "When the levee breaks" doesn't take a mind reader to know the epitome of true, classic rock songs. Jon Bonham insisted that his percussion be recorded in the hallway of an English castle. How ingenuous could that be? It will take a while (if any) to meet the standards of Led Zeppelin. Hats off to Keith Moon to coin the new name of the New Yardbirds. 😉

Actually, the first song on their first album, Good Times Bad Times, is the song that blew me away. It's easy to listen to it and not take in the incredible interplay between the bass and drums. That tune is monumental. Like When the Levee Breaks, it stands up to repeated listenings.

I'll never forget my Dad and a few of his buddies playing Zeppelin songs in our basement when I was just a little kid. He played bass, which he nicknamed his "Butch Bull Fiddle" I have that bass guitar now, but my love for the guitar is stronger so I play my Firebird. He passed away two years ago now when I was 22, so every time I hear this kick ass music, I think of my Dad! Thanks for turning me on to the greatest rock band ever Dad. RIP John Wilson Douglas.

As a kid, I just enjoyed the hell out of Zeps songs without thinking too much about the background or origins. Many years later, discovering Zep's love for blues music, the musicians and songs, it's all come together for me. Actually... it is impossible to play harmonica along with this song unless it has custom tuning, because... Jimmy Page slowed down the original recording slightly to give it some sort of effect on the listener like drowning. So the harp would be A flat somewhere.

I love Led Zeppelin, but I know that there's equally just as great artists out there though with their perfect unique tone. For example: The Beatles, The Doors, Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix, Gary Moore, Pink Floyd, Ozzy, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Rolling Stones, Nirvana, Metallica, Elton John, Billy Joel, Mötley Crüe etc.

The very best Blues Rock, pure genius in performance. Once lived within walking distance of the Mississippi River in South Louisiana and when the river rose up the levee this song always came to mind. Bonham often imitated never achieved.
