Hello Hank and the beautiful Sassy! Awesome 1973 stuff!!! It don't get any better than that Hank! Jimmy is playing with a Theremin which is also used on the studio recording. That antenna produces electronic sound waves from the proximity of Jimmy's hand (or something close to that).

Hi Dave, I just saw it on the link above. Very cool stuff. I heard where they used it on the studio version though Jimmy got a slightly different sound from it. It's great how we never stop learning things we thought we knew.😁👍

Zep always amazing live but I always felt Whole Lotta Love was one of the few Zeppelin songs that always sounded better on record. They never equalled it live. Love the tangents though. Better than the main song. Boogie Mama is incredible. And yeah its a Theramin, as has been explained in another post. Weird old thing, the Theramin. Page loved it.

Yes the Theremin made great sounds but the real "dirt" in this song came from those Les Pauls. The Sunburst 1959 which he modified and the red Paul, which I believe was stock. That Paul sound has been imitated, but never successfully . As Plant says "Rock it! "Rock it!" Page obliged.

John.Bonham. The instrument is called a THERIMAN (spelling not sure) It's in Beach Boy song GOOD VIBRATIONS it's also in an episode of THE BIG BANG THEORY Sit Com. It was invented by a Russian, I think.

Is just like an antenna and putting your hand out anything close to it interrupts the signal , or alters it. Think it has to do with electricity or magnetic fields, some dude like tesla probably invented it... it's called a theramin

Sassy That electronic device is called Thierman. Thierman produces sonic waves, and musician such as Jimmy wave his hand to create these effects. As other mentioned, Beach Boys use one in Good Vibrations. I think Pink Floyd use it in one song.
