This is a personal cover of 'Odyssey To Anyoona' originally by Jam & Spoon. This is the first cover I do, as I normally don't like covering / re-sampling something done before. 'Odyssey To Anyoona features a prominent sample of 'Le Mystère Des Voix Bulgares', which came to a progressive international recognition in the 1980's-1990's. Many trance artists sampled parts of their songs, such as Union Jack in 'Two Full Moons And A Trout'. But 'Odyssey' was he first one I heard and, for me, the most memorable.
The original is 10 minutes long, and first I tried to match the lenght until I realized a radio edit of the original was never made. Of course, there was the single 'Find Me', based on the musical elements of 'Odyssey' and made without the sample of 'Le Mystère Des Voix Bulgares'. But as I had been looking for the sample for years, finding it was my chance to attempt a cover version. I was curious of my capacity and how I could make my version. I didn't want a terrible remix with no relation to the original, there are plenty of them these days. So I decided to make it short, accessible, but with all the elements that were part of the original version. None of them were re-sampled: I had to redo the rhythm, bass, handclaps, and strings. The sample from 'Le Mystère Des Voix Bulgares' is intact, hypnotic and haunting.
I always hear something like 'Heeey, before the dawn' sung with some thick accent, which is just an impression of course, but I like it. Like a 'rave' resolution at night ends up with the sun in the dawn of a new day.
I bought the Jam & Spoon album in 1995 and brought it with me in a little trip in the countryside in Rigaud, Quebec. We played it loud so we could hear it from the street. When 'Odyssey' began, everybody loved it and it remains one of my best memories with this track. I thought I had put the whole street in a trance. Was it illegal? I imagined the news 'A young 19yo teen arrested for putting an entire street in a Trance!'. This is the feeling I had while working on my version. Finally, I was proud enough so I put it online. To me, it sounds like a radio edit of the original, and so I think the homage is sincere and true. Both to Jam & Spoon and Le Mystère Des Voix Bulgares.
I always loved Jam & Spoon since their 'ripomatic Fairytales' days. Sad that Mark Spoon has left us since. But they will always be in my book.
