Great, I have one of those books, and I'm very proud of it. Where my life started from that nation, while watching this great man running the country.

Bro don't mean to rain on your parade but the Brits quit Singapore in her darkest hour during ww2 and had a shit urban planning that led to racial riots

I think LKY said the same thing: he wished the Brits had stayed.

This is so powerful. I have thought for a long time that what the successful former British colonies did was instead of blaming everything on the British, learned from them and in many ways became better than them. You have confirmed this for me. You have to turn your present circumstances in to something better. There are great lessons everywhere to be learned. This is how it’s always been. As an Australian who has British ancestors who were business owners and in government in Malaysia and who is married to a Malaysian who has Singaporean family, I have much love for Singapore and Malaysia and have been trying to understand them for years. When I first visited Malaysia 16 years ago at the age of 17, I felt a peace I’ve never felt the moment I stepped off the plane. The person I look up to most from this region is Lee Kuan Yew. An honest, intelligent and strong person who truly loved his home.

Love this - thank you! You might also like to see Kishore Mahbubani talk about similar things - about being grateful to the West for sharing its gifts over the centuries. His words: "Humanity today could very well still be in the dark ages if the West hadn't woken up, tranformed itself, and began the process of transforming the world, too."

@@noticingtheobvious thank you. Great quote. We too often lose sight of this in the west. The guilt for the wrongs of the past seems to keep getting stronger and stronger here. Thank you for the great video. I think you are doing something right and unique, and your videos have a lot of potential. I will keep watching 👍

If a nation is an individual multiplied why do the Singaporeans do not have First World Standard of Living after 60 years under Lee Kuan Yew's ruling party?

LKY wasted his time focusing on GDP (instead of productivity) growth - a gargantuan mistake. That is why after 58 years Singapore does not have First World standard of living like the Swiss. (Only sustained productivity growth will lead to real wage growth and a higher standard of living. There were many years when productivity growth in Singapore was negative.) LKY and his ruling party also ran Singapore like a company instead of as a country - another big mistake. They did not invest enough in the only real asset of the country - Singaporeans. To make matters worse, they restricted to a minority % that each cohort can attend a local university. Their "pick-the-winner" policy is a failure. Singapore cannot compete in a knowledge based world economy because it lacks well educated citizens. Moreover, they focussed in accumulation of reserves. Singapore has massive reserves but it cannot buy time. Singapore has no global brand like Korea and Taiwan which have Hyundai, LG, Kia, Samsung and TSMC. Singapore only has an over-hyped airline and airport. Singapore does not have a robust economy because it only has over-priced real estate sector, value-extracting banks, and MNC who are in Singapire for cheap labour and tax breaks. Singapire needs regime change.

Hmm.. interesting points. You may be right. I just don't know. I can't say if SG needs a regime change or not in 2023. I can't even say that, if LKY did things differently SG would be in a better position. All I can say is that.. some of the ideas from his book, if I apply them to my own life, it seems to improve 🙂

It's still an enormous site better than when he started. Why you would compare Singapore, formed as a country less than a century ago to Switzerland makes no sense.

@@noticingtheobvious What is important is your takeaways. LKY's grandfather's takeaways reflect his time and his experience with the British, and his positive experience, or his focus on the positive. By the time the British (Empire) declined, LKY's grandfather was not around to witness it. Similarly, LKY saw the positive in the harrowing experience of the Japanese Occupation, and took the lessons of the positive instead of dwelling on the negative. As for the critique of LKY (and by extension the PAP and the SG Govt) as parroted by franciscody, those critiques tend to be contextless, destructive, pointless, and lost in time. And can be duly ignored. This is your sharing of YOUR TAKEAWAYS from this book, and the positive lessons you can draw from it. Irrelevant political critiques has no place here and is more an indictment of the critic's inability to understand context and relevance. You have nothing to apologise for. I thank you for sharing this video.
