Amazing Marcus Miller. A little bit of information: The painting of Marcus Miller (2:27 to 2:40) in an oil on canvas by the great Luis Fuster (Alcoi, Valencia, Spain). Is based in one of my photographs of Marcus at the Vitoria-Gasteiz Jazz Festival 1998.

Sorry, but the bassplayer on this one is called Anthony Jackson ! A true pioneer on the 5-stringer. I don't mean MM isn't a good bassplayer, but give the real artist full credit, please.

@@thedude4080 nope this track was written and played by MM but Marcus and Ritenour have gone separate ways and although written MM cannot play the track anymore.

When I was dj, I always give the solo +6dB. So that even simple brains catch the genius of this MMiller solo. Today noone thinks stuff like that is dancable. ...oompz...oomps....oompz...oomps... (yeah, that's working, give the beat with a big hammer, because technos forget the beat between two and four, if the three ist syncopated)

It's Marcus Miller. On this CD version Marcus Miller plays the bass. I happen to also have three transcription books (two are Japanese) and every version lists Marcus MIiler on bass. Plus, come on, this sounds more like Marcus than Abe!

You are correct, this tone is definetly not the Marcus tone we have all grown to love. But his tone has evolved over the yrs. He hooked up with Roger Sadowsky & the rest is history. But not much was added just a Bartolini preamp & a baddass bridge. Now ,it doesn't sound like Marcus tone, but the style is definetly Marcus. Man, Marcus was probably in his early 20's when this song was recorded. He has learned a hell of alot since then.

Well, you are right when you are referring to the live recording (e.g. GRP Live in Session, I own this one, too). But I was referring to the original (studio) recording ("Rio", GRP, released in 1979), where Marcus Miller is playing the bass of the tune "Rio Funk").

Don't think Marcus was using flats on this recording...strings were probably just broken in a bit.You can still hear the growl of the jazz bass. They also probably rolled off the top end a bit in the mix.Hi-fi bass sound wasn't popular yet! haha
