Lee Scratch Perry's brilliance has to be put through the lens of history to be fully appreciated. I know I'm not breaking any new ground here but I'd hate for anyone to just listen to this old man singing and not really know the story. During the 1960s and early 70s in Jamaica there was a phenomenon of different groups of people with their respective sound systems (that they built) which would play reggae and often compete for the attendance and approval of the public who would come listen and dance to the reggae. Each soundsystem became known for its style and quality of sound. Since the public wanted to come around and dance frequently the competing soundsystems would feel the pressure to create more material. This led to the creation of B Sides to the albums being played. These would be of the same tracks as the A Sides but the producers (like Lee Scratch Perry, King Tubby, Coxsone Dodd...) would drop the vocals in and out along with the various other instrument tracks. Major emphasis was on the drum rhythms, bass, and effects. This was the inception of dub and it really helped to form modern bass driven music and also that of effects like reverb and delay and others. So imagine _hearing these effects for the first time_ and smoking weed all the while! It was a brand new soundscape. And now imagine all of the other music that wouldnt exist if it weren't for Dub.

The undisputed King of Reggae Dub had a massive influence on me as a young man. Yes, it was late at night in the late 70's and I had been smokin' some very potent green. Sydney radio station JJ 1540 AM were well known for playing experimental and avant garde music. That's where I first heard Lee ' Scratch ' Perry. In June 1980, JJ became JJJ 105.7 FM and the music sounded even better. Superlatives cannot describe or do justice to the man and his contribution to music, art and culture. RIP mate

I know it is so bad of me, but just can't abide seeing these great reggae classics of my teenage being played by non Jamaican musicians! As a young African, I bought wholeheartedly into the Pan-Africanism of reggae music, and was sold on the Roots and Culture that accompanied the music! I know reggae got weak from a commercial aspect, and touring was the only way to earn! But this is hard !

Lee Perry was so much more than himself. Like many before and after him. The message and real emphasis is on the words power and sound. Yes, all and above but also all and below too. He wanted a better world. He wasn't chanting for money or entertainment. He was doing way way more.
