When I first played this game, my head canon was that Ellie knew Joel was lying, but still accepted it.

I’m so glad she understands that Joel is NOT a Good man, he’s a selfish, tortured, old man, but we connect with him because it’s from a place of love, too many people somehow made Joel into some saint and I’m like no he’s not, no one in this world is good, everyone is horrible one way or another.

there's plenty of misconceptions and missed details on both ends. joel is less inclined to trust people because it wasn't the infection that took away his daughter, it was people. the guard was escorting him out at gunpoint without paying him or even letting him take his bag, no weapons, no tools, no food/drinks, no medicines, for 99% of people that's as good as a death sentence. a cure wouldn't have made THAT much of a difference, the world is already full of infected and the most dangerous are the older ones and uninfected people, also the cure most likely wouldn't have been mass-produced and distributed around all willy nilly, it would have saved a few people and greatly empowered the fireflies or whoever got to subdue them (since their numbers were low and steadily dropping). people thinking joel is a 100% good guy are delusional but from a human viewpoint and knowing the world he lives in, he's far from the monster a lot of people make him out to be, he's just a tired old man that's had enough of everyone else's bullshit and just so happens to be an unstoppable killing machine.

I want to disagree with you but I can’t deny that you are making a good argument. I feel like Joel is trying to be a good person but instead is making himself be a bad person without even realizing it. I think his heart made actions quicker more than his mind.

@@johnmonke1457 I think it’s even simpler then that, to me Joel doesn’t care about being a good person anymore. He’s a smuggler, he’s killed a lot of people within those 20 years, he just cares about those he’s grown attached too. If anything he’s an Anti-Hero type of character, one who has removed the thoughts of morality and consequences, and now is only concerned with what he deems is the right decision. He knows his actions are wrong, but in the end, in this world they live in, he’s given up caring about what pain he causes, and only cares about Ellie and Tommy, and the few friends he has left. He knows eventually his karma will catch up to him, and he’s accepted that he will never be perfect. To your point I think he’s trying to bond with Ellie instead of being a good person, he subconsciously treats her like his daughter quite early with how stern he gets with her when it’s dangerous, and he notices it later which is why he try’s to dump her off, thinking that if he keeps going he will lead her down the path he’s chosen to be on, but in the end I think he just doesn’t care anymore, and that he just wants to be happy, with his family, which had extended to Ellie.

Funny thing my monarch is that they wouldn't be able to fight the fungus with a vaccine, might not even been able to develop one, because the infection is not a virus, is a fungus, while it's suposed to be posible to eliminate a fungus infection via vaccines, it is something that is not practical nether actually invetigated in the actuality, so Joel's desicion while selfish and arrogant was the right thing, the answer was Ellie's anti-bodies no necesity of killing the girl or extracting anything besides blood from her.
