Such a great Leeds side, if only Revie had stayed longer. Im sure they could have defended that title with the same side. People always say Revie didn't want to break up his team but he would have coped better than being England's manager with the thankless task of winning another trophy for national side. Clough, Armfield, Adamson, down the spiral they went, cheated of the European Cup in 75, selling Jordan, McQueen, hopeless mismanagement.

In this match Leeds was more strong in midfield. Chelsea did not exist there...By the way, what a good player Lorimer.

This game was a turning point in Chelsea's history. Osgood's goal would be his last before being sold to Southampton. After a poor start to the season Chelsea put together 4 wins and 2 draws before this game. They followed it with three straight defeats including losing 4-2 to West Ham on Boxing Day after leading 2-0 at half time. Osgood and Alan Hudson were dropped and then refused to train with the first team. Both players were transfer listed with Hudson quickly moving to Stoke. Osgood didn't attract a buyer until March and Dave Webb left at the end of the season. Chelsea were relegated the next season and spent the next 10 years trying not to go out of business

Watt Eva Interesting My 1st match was the 3-2 win against Leicester in September (I think) of '73. I believe it was the last time the Osgood/Hudson side won at Stamford Bridge.

Why does the title put Leeds first? It’s obvious from the thumbnail that Leeds are the away team. That season saw Leeds at their very best. They were brilliant. I was proud when my own team - QPR - got a 2-2 draw at Elland Road.

Eddie Gray, Allan Clarke, Johnny Giles and Terry Cooper missing for Leeds, 4 world class players. Probably the greatest club side ever.
@dlamiss8 жыл бұрын
+Michael Smith would say 2 to 11 of the Leeds team of the late 60s early 70s was the best outfield English 10 of my lifetime. Other teams had bigger squads but that side was class... They didn't have a world class keeper sadly. Sprake cost them at least one trophy and Harvey was no more than decent
@mizofan8 жыл бұрын
They never won the European cup. In their golden era they won the league twice, the FA Cup once, the Fairs Cup twice and the league cup once. How can that be the greatest club side ever. They were consistently excellent but it wasn't the best English club side ever.
@mizofan8 жыл бұрын
Sprake won them the Fairs cup final in 68 (and was excellent in the 65 cup final that Leeds lost), Hunter and Charlton cost them the crucial league-deciding match v West Brom in 71 with howlers whereas Sprake played well and kept them in the match. Hunter scored an own goal in the crucial match v Derby the next season after a good save by Sprake. Sprake made a mistake in the 70 FA Cup final in the mud but also made excellent saves. Sprake broke the world record transfer fee for a goalie on leaving Leeds after 500+ games, and usually did well for Wales; he can't have been that bad.

Bremner and Giles were great players. Few teams at that time didn't field a holding midfield player (Chelsea being another with Hollins and Cooke and later Hudson) This allowed Leeds (and Chelsea) to play 4 up front with 2 box to box playmakers, it was like having an extra player. Yorath was the safety man for Leeds, Boyle and later Kember played the defensive midfield role for Chelsea. Leeds, like Chelsea were a predominantly home grown side, You don't build the world's greatest team from your own youth squad. When Jordan and McQueen replaced Bates and Charlton, Revie certainly fixed the weakest links but you can't compare them to Real Madrid in the 60's or AC Milan in the 80's.
@richardbranton73965 жыл бұрын
Charlton wasnt a weak link & he wasnt replaced he retired & Bates wasnt either he was a team role player who would have been in most other 1st div teams first 11 week in week out ,Giles & Bremner where never going to be ousted
