Just dropping this tip for others, a Park district emits an averaged out entertainment value. The larger the district size, the more that entertainment value is 'spread out'. It can be a useful trick to manipulate land value just by painting a Park district. oh man, thanks for showing that props do have an effect for parks. Gotta admit, I was NOT expecting that ending to be so entertaining. Thanks for that bit of awesome ridiculous bit :)
@LeeHawkinsPhoto3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I’m not 100% sure that the entertainment value gets spread out, or at least not the buildings anyway. I’ve noticed in the past (haven’t checked again recently to see if maybe the game mechanic has changed) in a very long linear park in one city that the effects of a Park Plaza fo example are localized, and that a plaza 1km away in the same park didn’t affect lane value or leisure. It’s been a while since I put that to the test...I’d like to know a bit more how the props work out-if they’re local, or averaged or what. I could be conflating some things from like a year ago though...so don’t quote me on that just yet! 😁
@edwardmiessner65023 жыл бұрын
I would never put tolls on a public park, that's what taxes are for. Otherwise, superb job! Possible industrial traffic solution: build a Market Street connector from the freeway, that'll divert traffic. You may choke the traffic going into Fourth Street to one lane to discourage unnecessary traffic in town.

OH MAN!!! I guess I didn’t walk into that one! How could I skip such a great opportunity! Thank you! And I suppose there are other episodes with parks coming!
@dycedargselderbrother53533 жыл бұрын
Counterintuitively, park entrances near intersections can be problematic due to the path extending from the side of the gate, allowing people to skip the gate and enter from the side. You can see the path extension effect more clearly by drawing a regular path to an intersection and noticing that it has a bit of an 'L' shape to it. Perhaps more strangely, the same thing happens if you terminate a ramp at the entrance. I think the game considers the ramp path to be extended over the gate and that people are climbing over it or something. Sometimes the game sets invisible intersections; you can see these when people inexplicably cross the middle of the street. You can verify proper operation of a gate by clicking on it and then the route icon and then on a nearby path. If pathing occurs on the path but not the gate, and it looks like arrows are outside of the gate when clicking on paths, then the gate is improperly placed. If Move It! is available, dragging the entrance back a bit from the street tends to straighten the path. Props adding value is totally new to me, so there's yet another thing I learned from this series. Something I've recently learned is that special area income, i.e. from parks, industries, and campuses, have a negative effect on zoned tax revenue. Details can be found in Pwner’s Manual's "Running a Campus as a Business " Steam Community guide. I don't think it's a net negative given how profitable special areas tend to be but it could aid in reevaluating certain things. For example, the Recycling policy works as a function of collected tax, so fewer taxes collected make it cheaper to implement. Also, even regular parks are overpowered in this game. Structures like Small Park and Paradox Plaza are dirt cheap and have incredible effects on land value, especially when combined with the Parks and Recreation policy.
@johnterpack39403 жыл бұрын
The bit about props in the parks was eye-opening. I'm sorry I missed all the comments about roundabouts. I'd dive right in the middle of that. I hate roundabouts and make a point of never using them in any city. They're an ugly, lazy, band-aid "fix" for problems that have better solutions.
@LeeHawkinsPhoto2 жыл бұрын
Lol 😂 I really think they’re great IRL, but the way they have to be implemented in Cities: Skylines makes me stand up and say “PREACH, Brother!” I think they definitely have their place in traffic engineering, but there are many situations where they won’t work well at all.

@KnTenshi23 жыл бұрын
I've done a test and found something interesting. Since I live in a more rural city, I'm used to simpler, smaller neighborhoods and have played a a couple games using only 1x2 Low Density Residential houses in 4xN neighborhoods. I've found that doing so (besides being incredibly tedious) gives you better (and earlier!) household density. Eight 1x2 houses hold 8 households, where as a one 4x4 house starts at 2 households and has to level up to eventually get 5 or 6. And the edges are even better since then you can zone 1x1 houses. Again, it's mind numbingly tedious, but to my rural eyes, it looks more "right". Unfortunately, the same trick doesn't really work for Low Density Commercial nor Industry (though the 1x1 edge part does).
@LeeHawkinsPhoto3 жыл бұрын
LOL yes, I have done something similar...it looks really whacky with full 2-unit wide streets, so I used the narrow 1-unit streets from NExt. I did the math and those houses are on lots that are roughly 26 feet by 52 feet, which is super duper tiny for single-family! It's a pretty reasonable size for a row house though I suppose. I just did a quick search, and a fairly common old urban lot size is 30-36 feet. Nowadays it's pretty common to see something more like 90 x 105 feet though, which would roughly be a 3x4 unit lot in Cities: Skylines. I'm personally a bigger fan of having the smaller houses...often I'll zone so the houses are only on 2x4 or 2x3 unit lots in the game, and then fill them in afterward. It looks better than the giant houses we get otherwise. I always feel like the scale is so far off in the game when it comes to the buildings. The commercial/office buildings are so tiny sometimes, while the single family houses are gigantic, and don't technically hold a single family.
@KnTenshi23 жыл бұрын
@@LeeHawkinsPhoto Wow. I didn't realize the cells were that tiny. Then again, my house is about the size to fit in a 1x2 lot. It was built in the 50's or 60's (and again, rural city).
@LeeHawkinsPhoto3 жыл бұрын
@@KnTenshi2 I live in a townhouse condominium in a suburb...except that when it was built in 1965, it was still mostly farm country here...and I'm pretty sure it's only about 18 ft x 25 ft or so...which would easily fit on a 1x2 with room to spare, even with the attached garage. I would say it depends less on how rural the area is than what era most of it was built...at least here in the US...not sure where you are.
@namelessfellow3 жыл бұрын
@@KnTenshi2 Yeah, the cells are just 8 m by 8 m. One downside to the smaller buildings: a bunch of the policies have a per-building cost. So if you want to run something like High-Tech Housing (which is almost like a mini Eden project, for residential) then it's better to only have the big ones.

Glad you found it useful! I don’t think anyone’s ever covered the mechanics thoroughly-especially while demonstrating them. I learned a lot myself about the cims’ lifecycle through all the research. I’d have liked to spiced this one up more, but there’s only so much you can do just mulling it over in your head before you realize that there are more fun aspects of the game to get to if you just get’er done so you can move on. Part 6 is a whole other beast from these. I have lots of building to do, and lots of concepts to demo. And there’s a lot that you want to get done all at once. 🤪 So I’m still working out Part 6...and how to do it too. But Part 6 should be a big deal! And I think 7 & 8 will be too.

There are two policies that unlock at Worthy Village you can use for water and power besides the budget: water usage and power usage, which reduce consumption by 15 and 11% respectively, for a cost of ₡5 per week per building. I haven't compared the costs of the policies to the cost of adjusting the budget sliders. It might be worth an experiment. Perhaps they're worth keeping on and running under budget even at city sizes?
@LeeHawkinsPhoto3 жыл бұрын
I almost used those policies rather than increasing the budget...but they cost a fortune! It’s always better to avoid these policies when your city is small or you will accumulate cash very very slowly. It’s not really that expensive by comparison to raise the budget though.

Is it safe to assume that the ETA for part 6 is about a month?
@LeeHawkinsPhoto3 жыл бұрын
Hard to say. I’m working on it now. A lot of it depends on how fast the research goes, as well as what else I have competing for my time IRL. I wish I had a set schedule, but some of these come together faster than others. The other problem I have right now is that I need to do a ton of stuff all at once and at this point the game throws even more at me on top of that. It’s hard to work out the best order of things. I think once we get through the next 2-3 videos, it’ll get a bit easier since I’ll have a lot of the reorganizing done-which will allow me more freedom of choice on what topic to cover next. The next few videos will be worth the wait though! I introduce a lot of planning and traffic strategies that I don’t see anywhere else. And I might hold off and release them in February anyway, but provide early access outside of KZbin as they’re finished.

@@rtleitao78 lol it seems a lot of folks just go for background on those. I have thought about editing these down into smaller chunks with the action more compressed. @@rtleitao78 I appreciate that! I honestly decided MMLT was going to be all 10-20 minute videos to begin with, and since I had a few clamoring for longer and live stuff, I decided to try it out. Puerto del Mar has been fun so far! It’s hard to make it move since it’s live though. I love doing both, but for completely different reasons. I figured I would appeal mostly to the busy people who want a quick bit of information to help them up their game with MMLT though. I’m glad it works for you!
