Okay, great explanation. I understand the solution. But the thing is that after some time, when this solution is not fresh on the mind, can someone produce this solution from scratch? I don't think I could. Maybe I didn't understand it well enough.

Many people could. I certainly couldn't. I learned coding through a bootcamp, and I feel like questions like this focus more on data structures and computer science principles that you don't necessarily learn from self-study or bootcamp programs.

If you understand the concept, that's an excellent first start. From there, it's just about practice and being familiar enough with a language to implement it. I am also self taught, and initially ran into challenges with data structures and algorithms. Watching solutions like these and doing problems (such as on leetcode or hankerrank) helps to build skill. It may seem overwhelming, but there seem to be a limited number of concepts repeated in problems, and once you learn them, new problems become that much easier. By the end, you'll find the way you think about code has improved, and that you're a better programmer as a result. :)
