But because of bill, he was left behind and killed, even tho he was only few centimetres away from being saved by zoey. Thats why zoey was very angry with bill in "the sacrifice", coz she had the chance to save another carrier, yet bill blew it. You can read the story online, its a canon l4d comic about the events between "the harvest" and "the sacrifice".

Bill dying is canon and is poetic. He, as the unofficial leader of the group and the oldest member, who also always wanted to fight again, could not have asked for a better ending, dying for his friends like that. It's the perfect ending for an old warrior. However, Bill surviving at the cost of somebody else dying also has a very bittersweet taste to it. Him bemoaning the fact that a younger life had to die to preserve his, without him able to intervene, living so long and surviving so much, but seeing the very last of what you care die before you as some sort of cruel joke at his expense. I still can't decide which ending I like better.

The fact is that since Bill's death, there is no one else to lead the team. Francis is the protection and backbone of the team, but not the head, Louis is the conscience and optimism, and Zoe is just an 18-year-old girl who hasn't lived her life yet to lead two grown men.

The comic depicted this quite clearly as she firmly decided by herself what the three would do after Bill's sacrifice to raise the bridge: to lay low for a while to wait for zombies to disperse from the area then make way to the boat and escape to the Florida Keys.

As the Passing showed, much of the finale decision goes to Louis given how he's the one who speaks with Coach's group the most and convince the other two to help them. You can see during the interaction that Zoey shows little to no signs of wanting to help, while Francis is super reluctant. Meanwhile, Louis is the most vocal and active in spite of being the most injured and handicapped. Zoey may be the leader, but it seems that much of the final say goes to Louis.

Zoey and Francis originally didn't want to help because it means lowering the bridge yet again, that they - in the Sacrifice campaign - already went through hell (and losing Bill to it) to raise it; they finally relented and agreed to help as Louis convinced because there was no other choice in sight. Louis seeks to help whenever possible, it's his inherent nature that we see throughout. But the comic made it clear that Zoey takes up after Bill's mantle as the de-facto "leader".

There is actually an add-on called "The Sacrifice: True Ending" or something like that where you can actually do that. It is really difficult to last more than 30 seconds. SI and Tanks attack while commons constantly hit you and slow you down, making it hard to escape the previously mentioned SI and Tanks.

But yeah, I saw it for myself recently, was playing Bill, completed a campaign, then without switching characters, set the lobby to an L4D2 campaign, and yeah, I was set as Nick.

It would be crazy if the community can somehow implement a cutscene specifically for Bill when he jumps down and/or after starting the generator and it goes similar to the comics. Just my wishful thinking though, because I can only imagine how hard it is to make, let alone Steam implementing it if by one infinitesimal chance it was actually made. Edit: Or maybe a video that edits in that cutscene, but once again that's just wishful thinking from me.

There is actually a mod for L4D2 called:"The Sacrifice:True ending"that implements the cutscene into the game, but no matter who you choose it will always show Bill in the cutscene

I never realized how much of a emotional connection I had for Bill till I saw the first trailer for the sacrifice. It gave me shivers but not only that, made me sad. Bill had always been the leader and wise, matured person of the group. Everytime I'm Bill or someone else is playing him I hate to watch them or me make the sacrifice.
