Hi Guys,
This clip discusses how to develop an effective and precise posture and positioning for the left hand, and is part of our upcoming online bass instruction series, covering many musical and technical issues from the first steps to complex concepts both for Double and Electric Bass.
Remember, it is phisycally hard to get started with your left hand, so take as many brakes as possible and build up your stamina gradually!!!!!
Welcome to zoltansbasslounge,
Hope you are all doing well,
Zoltan

Zoltan, the left hand technique is very important, and I had been doing it all wrong. Now I am following your suggestions, arching my hand, using my finger tips, and I feel my strength growing and my intonation improving.

Thanks Zoltan - Great lesson that answered a lot of my questions. I'm a professional EB player and at age 67 decided to make the plunge into upright - I intend to take some lessons locally but haven't had the time and your video's are definitely filling the gap and the best I've seen on the internet.

Hi Harold, thanks very much for your kind comment! Well, i've been teaching in "real life" professionally for a long time, but its entirely different to do it in front of the camera, so knowing that it works is a very good thing. I think you'll love playing the upright bass, and experience how easy playing the electric bass will feel like after having played its big brother. Thanks again, enjoy these lessons and please check back, i've got loads more in the making... Best wishes, Zoltan

Interesting, I was taught differently. Ring finger is supporting the pinky finger. So it's 1,2,4 with 3 strengthening 4. As you go up the neck 1,2,3 used only and 4 is floating. It worked well for 40 years.

Hi, sure. There are several ways of course, most noteably the Francoise Rabbath method which is very different from the authentic german method i discuss in this video.

As an adult beginner, I have a problem moving, for example, from, 1st position to 3rd position and back. I find it difficult to get my hands to return to the exact position (in 1st). I have inserted two grub screws in the back of the neck of my bass, so that my thumb touches them in either 1st or 3rd position. This helps me know that I can play the notes I was after. However, if I moved to a different bass I would not have this type of assistance. Can you offer some advice?

Hi Michael, you need to learn shifting between positions. You can practice the C Dd D Eb major scales which will get you playing comfortably in these low positions. Check out the videos i put up on these scales, they contain thorough explanations of all the shifting involved

How much do you turn your wrists, while you play this instrument? I've got a turning disabablity in my wrist, so I kinda need to know. Possibly Subscribed for a long time. :)

Hi, you don't need to turn your wrist too much to play. Sometimes we tend to turn our wrists as we play the lower strings, but you can correct that by bringing your shoulder in towards the bass neck. I discussed it in this video, and it's something I've learnt from a world renowned double bass soloist. Just checked on the vid, you'll find it at about 2:37. Hope this helps, and thanks for subscribing man!
