I had no idea that G.I. Joe was exclusive. I especially loved the first one as kid - I'll never forget playing it on a rental and my brother who used to pick on me a lot as a kid pushed me too far and I beat him in a fight for the first time. That marked a huge change in our sibling relationship (for the better!) and it all happened while I was playing G.I. Joe on the NES.

Hey, here's an ideia: Games Left in Brazil! Our video game market was so different that a lot of stuff happened. We had a Street Fighter 2 for the Master System and also call the Gensis Mega Drive, like Europe and Japan

We in Europe didn't call it the Megadrive, we called it the Sega. Many of us even called Nintendo consoles the Sega. Some of us pronounced it 'See-ga'. In my town we did, until they started advertising gaming products on TV regularly, then it kind of morphed into 'Say-ga', and finally, by about 1996: 'So-ny'.

This is random, but- You guys are lucky you have such a strong, lasting friendship in each other. Last Friday I lost my best friend since elementary school in a motorcycle accident, he was 26. He was someone where as soon as he took interest in a game he would commit himself till he was the best. Then when playing with you he wouldn't take it as a burden to step back down to your level and teach you everything he could. There's so many titles, and even systems, I probably would never know about it if it wasn't for him. Who knows if I would even be a fan of your show today if it wasn't for growing up with him, and having that passion shared with me. There's going to be a lot of games that are never going to feel right playing again. Knowing how long you two have been friends honestly brings joy to my heart. Time moves by so fast, it's all to short to make nothing but good memories. Even if it's sitting around playing a video game together, you're still going to look back on those times as something irreplaceable.

G.I. Joe was popular overseas and the American themes were taken out. For instance in the UK it was called Action Force, which is connected to some interesting toy history if your curious. Also, Storm Shadow did have an interesting background in the Marvel comics but he also was re-released as a Joe in the Hasbro toy line at some point in the late 80's.

There's these games based on the American Girl doll series that, for more or less obvious reasons (well since relatively few know about the dolls outside North America) it never saw an international release apart from the in-house developed mobile apps. Even for a fan of the series such as myself, most of the games leave a lot to be desired. Kit Mystery Challenge for the DS was more of an Asimo simulator and a frustrated attempt at a Nancy Drew style game. Same case with Julie's which ran off the same engine. The PC games by THQ were meh, but it's OKish. AG Premiere however is more of a kitsch-fest and could give you hours of unintentional hilarity, no thanks to the text-to-speech feature.

The Lone Ranger is still on my NES wish list. I had no idea that it hadn't been released outside of North America... although, considering the source material, I shouldn't be terribly surprised. Changing styles of gameplay-- similar to what we see in Vice Project Doom or WURM-- tends to keep experiences fresh, as long as the gameplay is executed properly. I wish I could get into the Rolling Thunder games. RT3 does look and sound really good, but the duck and cover shooting gameplay style just doesn't grab me. That said, much like the Splatterhouse sequels for the Genesis, I always find it interesting to see arcade sequels made specifically for consoles. Perhaps it was a harbinger of changing times as arcades would eventually give way to console popularity. Oh. C: The Contra Adventure. I still, to this day, don't understand why Konami farmed out Contra to Appaloosa Interactive TWICE. Contra: Legacy of War was bad enough. C: The Contra Adventure makes you think that lessons were learned after the previous disasterbacle... but nope. Just... ew. No. It was sad to see such a good IP take a nosedive in the 32/64-bit era like Contra did. Funny how Castlevania found a better fate than Contra, and then the two IPs kind of shifted spots on the PS2 as the Contra games got a bit better while the Castlevania games got a bit worse. Thanks for another entertaining video. Have a great time at Retropalooza!

GI Joe is actually pretty big in Japan, it was reworked into “henshin cyborg” which had a spin off called “microman” which was brought stateside as “micronauts”, and that had a spin-off called “micro change” - which was combined with another toy line called “dia clone” before being brought over as a franchise you might be familiar with - Transformers. "Well they only do retro games, so anything related to modern gaming they haven't done" "Yes but they do not want to do modern, retro is their thing" "What if they did modern AND retro at the same time, nowadays is fashion being retro, so there are plenty of games" "Yes yes, and since they are new they have less probability of having already apearded in other episodes" Yeah ...stuff :P Once again the ideia was to help unlock new ideias for the show, not a request or anything.

I know of a great game exclusive to NA. Metal Combat: Falco´s Revenge is the sequel to Space Bazooka/Battle Clash for the Snes. Produced by the one and only Gumpei Yokoi. If you havn´t played it or it´s prequel think of it as a Punch Out type of game but your control method is the Super Scope. It even has a chip inside (OBC-1) which no other Snes game used for some advanced sprite-work. Even though the Super Scope isn´t the best device out there this game really shines through. Think of it as what Wario Land is for the Virtual Boy. :D As always the episode was FANTASTIC and you guys are awesome!

Joe, you may be surprised to know that G. I. Joe was actually pretty popular in Europe is well, at least it was in Norway where I grew up. The franchise had its name changed to Action Force when it was introduced to our side of the pond, and I think they changed around some of the characters or introduced new ones in order to cater to a more international audience. I'm not sure they ever aired the show here in Norway, but I'm pretty certain they did in the UK.

Oh yeah? Do tell.
@jimwornell596610 жыл бұрын
David White Back then, testing NES games, we had to do "compatibility checks" on every hardware revision, including Famicom, and video tape everything. The Famicom, as you know, has this microphone built in to the controller. Well, the "tester" got bored testing on the Famicom, and thought it would be funny to say "Smoke cigarettes and drink beer," in a high-pitched voice. (Remember, this was pre-ESRB and during the stringent limitations against alcohol, drugs, and violence) As a joke, he pointed the taped "bug" out to his supervisor. It sounded so real, the boss', boss', boss got involved. Suddenly, they're all in an uproar about this NES game promoting tobacco and alcohol use and ready to tear into the licensee. "Tester" sheepishly had to admit that it was a joke and apologize. His fellow testers never let him live that down.

I believe that the Storm Shadow shown in the G.I. Joe: The Atlantis Factor game was from the "Ninja Force™" line of action figures that came out a few years before the brand collapsed. The first run of the figure was the white Cobra ninja. The second run (when he was allied with G.I. Joe) he was still white, but given a hood and a checkered-style outfit (I had this one -- you could clearly see his Arashikage clan tattoo ). And in the "Ninja Force" he kept the hood but was given a significant amount of black on his costume. Most people only know him from the original G.I. Joe cartoon series where he was an unrepentant Cobra stooge. I am a veritable fountain of useless knowledge.

An interesting tidbit about about G. I. Joe, I think the series was actually released in the UK as "Action Force", and the toys were integrated into the Action Man toy line up, and tried to pass it off as "international heroes" rather than all American heroes. I have a VHS tape which I've had since I was a kid called "Action Force: Sink the Montana", which I'm pretty sure was also an episode of G. I. Joe. That's as far as my exposure to it goes though. It's a shame the game didn't manage to make it here in any way, shape or form though. Oh well, shall have to import.

Great episode! A nice bunch of games it was interesting to hear your opinion about. Something I can never understand is why the dropped the co-op in RT3.
