I have tried this technique. Such an amazing approach, but one problem. The t-shirt's small thin cotton strips/dust always get stuck on my canvas. If the canvas has white paint on it, it shows more, reducing the quality of the painting :(. Do you have any solutions regarding this issue?

LOVE IT! Thank you for sharing this with the world. I've been struggling with the "Don't thin" and brush strokes. Liquitex is my favorite for everything: mixed media, texture, colored pencil on paper, and 3D models. They have really improved over the years so it's worth the extra money IMO. Edit add: And the brush hairs! There's always 1 somewhere! No more hairs with this. Even good brushes will drop a hair during varnish.

I just wanted to stop by and drop a huge THANK YOU, David!! Since watching this video I have successfully varnished at least a dozen paintings in the time it normally would take me to do two--simply because I dreaded the varnishing step! It was always so time consuming and messy, but this technique has saved my rump. It's faster, cleaner, I don't get brush strokes or weird bumps or divets, and it saves so much varnish! This has been a total game-changer for me, and I am very grateful to you for posting this video. Thanks so much!!

Yup.... You have changed my ENTIRE outlook and method!! I have so many pieces I've been dreading to varnish due to a bit of PTSVS ( post-traumatic stress varnishing syndrome ) from ruined pieces in the past. I'm fairly certain I won't make this look as easy as you have...but I am confident that I will succeed with your method 😊. I’m still a bit nervous to approach my larger canvases, to be honest. I'm assuming that if I use the same method on a larger scale, I will prevail!! Thanks so much! Your videos have been game-changers for me! 😄😘
@LeftBrainedArtist3 жыл бұрын
PTSVS!?! LOVE IT! I hope you don't mind if I steal that one Julie? For larger canvas just do a small section. 8X8 or something. Vary which direction you choose the section and the circular direction you apply the varnish on each layer. You'll master it in no time!

I Love your videos!!!!!! I gave up on All liquid varnishes, but no one has ever said you could add water and apply it like you did... I have a few different brands of spray varnishes, Winsor Newton's pro gloss varnish, krylon triple thick glaze, another krylon. A few rustoliums, Well, last week I found polyacrylic clear gloss spray varnish. I Fell madly in love with it.. Usually 1 coat is all I need... I've watched videos after videos, they had to put so many coats on to get the lines "out" . Noooo. you still saw them. I subscribed to so many channels. I love my little pouring family. One I watch always used liquitex gloss varnish, with a Good foam brush. Looked great at a far. But when , he or she would show it in the light, they'd get all excited by the cells and glimmer, all I saw were lines. Because I didn't know better I followed the rules, bought the foam brush, then later on I bought a expensive brush For varnishing . Btw, that worked better than the foam. I figured that was the look... Then I tried the sprays. Luckily I still sucked at pouring ended up throwing 5, 6 or 7 away. I checked out their website, dude they had one priced at $150 it was a little level 1 8x10, you could see the criss cross lines plain as day. Just like the ones in my trashcan. Lol. Now they only use resin. BEAUTIFUL peices.. Poor folk can't afford that. Btw lol. I went back to the site, thought I'd like to buy one of their peices. $700 bucks 14x14.. That's more than my house payment.. I pour nearly every day. I have a ton varnished, wrapped and boxed up. I donate to nursing homes, shelters, Harbor House, ( a thrift store) it may have cost me $15 and up to make it, if ppl down on there luck can get it for $4 or whatever price they put on it and it makes their home look nice, it makes me happy. Even though I have no clue who bought it.. If they are gone the next time I go in, I get a gitty feeling that a pc of me is in their home. Oh sheesh, look at me writing a novel at 4am. Anyway. Thanks for the tip..

If the brush marks are deep you will only dampen them and not remove them all together. I know this from unfortunate experience. Too much varnish makes the top coat look like plastic which you don't want either so it will be a delicate balance.

Windex -- anywhere near any art gives me the shivers. But it got me to thinking if not Windex, then what? My paintings would probably get a cloth saturated to a fairly dry state with spray furniture polish. The propellant bothers me though on our fragile acrylic substrates. Even that does not releave my jitters about this. Wonder what museums use? And what acrylic paint manufacturers' customer service at Golden, and Liquitex suggest? They're probably developing a formulary for just this application as we speak. But in the meantime ....
@LeftBrainedArtist3 жыл бұрын
Water will do if there is no silicone oil and it hasn't been stored for a while. However, with silicone you need something to break it down or it will cause your finish/varnish/resin to not stick to the surface.

I haven't come around to purchase Liquitex varnish so I tried the same idea with gloss modpodge and it works like a charm!! And on the plus size, no need to wait 1 hour between each coat :P

I don’t think I can thank you enough. I’ve been using polyurethane high gloss, but because of the streaks I started pouring it over my canvases to finish them. They turn out beautiful with no streaks but are so messy to do and I lose so much of my polyurethane with every painting that it’s very expensive, plus it leaves a fairly thick coating on the finished canvas. I can’t wait to try your method. I just bought a new bottle of pouring medium.

Wonderful Lynne. It really is the easiest method I have found. Don't worry if the first three coast don't look perfect. Not sure what is is about the 4th but it shines it up right.

I have used spray varnish which for me works the best. I followed the advice of another artist, used Mod Podge, ended up with streaks & lines on 2 of my favorite paintings. Didn't like to use Polyacrylic because it had to be applied heavily to get even application. Thank you again.

You are most welcome. Spray works great for sure Anna. Just don't have the space to do that in the winter here so this works better all year round for me.

Let me know how it goes. Definitely my favorite current method.

@@LeftBrainedArtist It works great. But I also got some streaky results mainly with darker colours which I'm not sure yet as to why (I'm using Amsterdam Acrylic paint). Will keep experimenting.

Thanks David. These tips are very helpful. I like this method better than the varnish spray. Have a good day.

Happy to help Sunita. I especially like this in the winter when spraying really isn't feasible.
