Correct! Crimes/criminal records are not pardoned; the criminal record and conviction remains intact. Only the punishment (sentence) is commuted (reduced or eliminated). Also, presidential pardons are limited to commuting the sentences (punishment) for federal offenses only. If not yet actually convicted, but charged or currently under investigation for a federal offense, a pardon can also be issued -- whether it is for an individual or a group that is involved. Doesn't necessarily stop the investigation or prevent a conviction from taking place, but it might dictate that they can't be held pending trial... and overall make it pointless to proceed with a trial if it specifies that no punishment can be handed down, no fines, no prison, no bail pending trial, etc. Just depends upon the conditions specified by the pardon -- i.e. A pardon might say there can be no execution but still allows for life in prison OR it might be a full pardon which prevents any punishment at all. The punishments for treason and impeachment, however, are both off limits -- the sentence/punishment for those crimes can NOT be pardoned (commuted/reduced/eliminated) by a president. The Constitution absolutely prohibits it and explicitly denies the president that power.
