I literally finished reading the book like 2 hours ago and I give it 5/5 stars. The book was creepy af from beginning to end. Yes the pacing was a little slow but it helped to build up the whole atmosphere of the story and what the characters are like. I kept saying wtf is going on and what are these people!? From beginning towards to middle of the book. The mystery, the creepiness of the household and High Place made it so easy to keep reading. The book was so unpredictable I NEEDED to know wtf was wrong with these people and what was going on. I was tense the whole time reading the book and I was tense AFTER I finished reading the book. I will never forget the story, it was really well done 👌🏾.

i loved this book so much that i literally made a goodreads account and wrote a review 😭 the cover is so stunning and im glad i judged this book by it lol. my favorite parts were definitely the atmosphere and setting as you mentioned, but i also loved how the house was pretty much a character in and of itself! near the end, i think it was virgil who told noemí “the house loves you” and that really struck a chord with me. i wasn’t really bothered by the pacing and i think it paid off nicely. i actually loved the ending and i gave it five stars though i understand why you gave it four. loved this review! subscribing to see your thoughts on other books! 🤍

I think a lot of folks with "pacing" problems don't read or have never read gothic horror and were expecting a thriller. I really liked Mexican Gothic, too! It was so creepy and the atmosphere was perfect!

You're right. Most of the reviews I've seen are from people who mostly read fantasy and romance. Their reviews always complain about the typical elements of Gothic horror stories. They also expect to be scared with each page, but horror doesn't always have to be scary to be good. Mexican Gothic was really good, and I'm glad to see a review that doesn't hate on the genre.
@jennifernash46384 жыл бұрын
@@itsjaymone I'm glad you've noticed this, too! I think sometimes when you read a lot of fast-paced fiction, you forget how to "sit" in a book and let it stew. Fantasy and romance can both be quick reads, for sure because there is usually a lot happening.
@itsjaymone4 жыл бұрын
@@jennifernash4638 Also, Gothic horror is meant to critique something in society, and that clearly went over a lot of people's heads.

I just finished this this week and was waiting to hear your review. I absolutely loved it. I do like the ending and the last five pages too, I think that it wrapped it up nicely and opened up an opportunity for continued speculation on the future, but also it wrapped up the way an old pulp fiction Gothic novel would of, so I liked that, because the author did such a good job at keeping the book in the Gothic genre and maintaining the integrity of those types of books while still being modern and experimental with the characters and not necessarily using old time gender roles completely. Also I am in love with Francis, maybe because I like a sensitive type lol he was still a strong character and stood up for her, but ultimately it was her who saved them. The ambience was so amazing I loved it so much. Anyway love your reviews!!!
@TeaRanosaur3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I was very glad the after-ending was in there because I just needed that little extra Francis and those few pages really wrapped up the colonialism themes in a really interesting and open ended way

I read this book earlier this year, and I loved it. I didn't have any issues with the pacing - it was a slow creep of increasing dread and anticipation. The SA elements I think were meant to make the reader extremely uncomfortable, as uncomfortable and unsettled as Noemi herself. Books are supposed to make you feel things, though I will admit that I get annoyed when that particular trope gets used over and over and over again. Characters that are female deserve more. I also read her other book, Gods of Jade and Shadow, not too long after this one. Totally different genre, but another awesome read. I recommend. I'm planning on picking up more of her books soon.

I liked it overall. It was a slow burn but beautiful writing and a really interesting and unnerving premise for a haunted house story. I read this soon after reading Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. It wasn't as action packed, but I felt like I was transported to a similar time and setting which I was very happy with. I didn't even realize it was set in the 50s going in, and the reminder of Rebecca came to mind before I even realized the time it was in which really speaks to how well it's written. I'm glad I read it because I was hesitant after all the mixed reviews. Definitely worth it IMO.
