When I was a kid we used to get grab bags from Poly-Paks and Olson Electronics. Mostly floor sweepings, but they were fun to dig through and learn about the parts. My house was only about two blocks from the Knight Kit factory, I spent a lot of time digging in their dumpster. My mother didn't appreciate that.
@tomschmidt38122 күн бұрын
Wow you must be about the same age as me (78). Growing up it was always tough to choose between Heathkit and Knightkit since I grew up in the Chicago area so Allied & Knight kit had the home town advantage. I'm sure I probably still have some of the Poly-Pals and Olsen stuff hanging around.

I wonder if you're applying the judgement on the ESR right because I see some caps of a brand in your "bad" pile that I have come to trust to compete on quality with the best known brands. ESR is highly dependent, not only on series, but also on capacity and voltage ratings. Applying a blanket 1 Ohm limit is therefore just wrong.
@andrewsawesome Жыл бұрын
New general purpose 100uF 16v capacitors from Rubycon test as 1.3 ohms ESR, so that limit was way too low. I think the "good" pile was all Low ESR capacitors.

Small value caps do indeed have esr higher than 1ohm, even can be more than 5 ohms and be fine. Tolerance spec on capacity can be 20 % even more. So all you got, is ptobably well within spec.

We had a lot of this in UK back in the 1950s/60s and I used to buy these. It can be fun sorting through the bits but the reality is that it's only a good buy when you can use all the parts. It is much better to buy just what you need for a particular project and leave these "bargains" well alone! Best wishes!
@walterwinnipeg73505 ай бұрын
=== It is much better to buy just what you need for a particular project === That does make sense if you're talking about expensive components. However, there's also the convenience factor of "having a bunch of different components on hand". Sometimes, you don't actually know what capacitor or resistor value will work best in your circuit, especially if it's your own new design which is being prototyped. So, a collection of common value resistors, capacitors, diodes, can be a good investment, saving you time and the shipping charges you'd incur if buying "just what you need".

Perhaps you could test a couple of those failed capacitors with a scope and conduct a >100kHz square wave ESR test to see if they indeed exhibit a high ESR drop in their waveform when switching the square wave.
@Kalvinjj26 күн бұрын
To be honest I think the tester machine does pretty much that, plus imagine the patience needed to prove that a crap cap is crap indeed, or to prove it's not and save like one cent.

@pa4tim5 ай бұрын
You can not measure caps with that gadget and compare them to the datasheet because the datasheets give capacitance for 100/120Hz and tan d, that is the dissipation factor for the same frequency. Many datasheets give the impedance |Z| for 100 kHz. They do not state the ESR. You probably used one of the random lists.
@Ken-ei8xf27 күн бұрын
Similar to you, I purchased a bulk lot of resisters. Each strip of 20 was poorly marked with values and there is a lot of variance between what they should be and what they are. For example, a strip of 20 560k resisters varied between 540 and 565k

as an electronic component distributor, i'm curious about people prefer buying those items from online shop or distributors? maybe prefer online platform like amazon and aliexpress bcz more convenient?
@copernicofelinis22 күн бұрын
Shipping fees can be too high for a hobbyist, some distributors require a VAT number otherwise they won't sell to you, Amazon already has your card number (or you can pay using coupons), certain kits have the appeal of a certain variety. Of course when you find out the parts are either factory rejects, or fakes with inferior characteristics the advantages do not look that appealing anymore.
@johncarnege22 күн бұрын
Some of the "bad" capacitors are not really bad. They are just low quality. Meaning that you sould not use it for timing as such and only for simple power supply cucuits. I ordered brand new ones from Ali and they were just like that.
@liquidsnake68795 ай бұрын
the biggest downside to Ali is really the shipping, it takes way too long, it's better now but it's still not great
@phuang322 күн бұрын
ESR is not the correct criteria to filter out bad capacitors. Small electrolytic capacitors inherently come with large ESR. Get a LCR tweezer and measure the DF at 100Hz and 1Khz. The DF should be less than 0.2 at 100Hz and less than 1.0 at 1Khz.
