First, let me just say that I'm really happy that everyone likes this video. I thought I would record it since I couldn't really find anyone else who DID go through with Ulysses' advice about mentioning other legate's failures. It seem Hubris really is the fall of the mighty. Something I love about this is how you convince Ulysses, You have to find all of the tapes and then use what you´ve heard in those tapes to convice him, no [speech 100] only the choice, Just like the master in Fallout 1

Yeah, also - I might be wrong since it's been a while - but you can't wear any clothes that disguise you as a gang member (for example, you can't wear the NCR/Legion clothes). Lanius will comment on your clothes when he sees you come up to him and he won't like it. It won't matter if you have Speech 100, or not - you won't be able to convince him to retreat. I thought it was pretty insignificant since I haven't heard anyone mention it, but it buffled me a lot.

Convincing the Master in Fallout 1 was very easy. All you had to do is pick up... What was it??? Like some data from a sciencist in the BoS base. That's literally one dialogue option to do, then go to the Cathedral where the Master is, ask the Cathedral's leader to take you to the Master and then the Master will be like "so what shall it be? Will you join me or will you die? JOIN! DIE! JOIN! DIE!" And then you go... "yo, dude. Ask one of your females if they have a vagina". The Master - "Sure". *checks* "Oh, crap. SHIT!" *cathedral explodes*

There's a similar mod for following Elijah. You launch rockets of the Sierra Madre Cloud into orbit programmed to hit the dam, and it's all wired up to Helios One. Get up to tower, use detonator, watch the Mojave sky turn red. Next thing you know you're clearing out the survivors trapped inside the dam with holograms. Then, you and Elijah can begin your new world. A quiet world, that is nothing like what happened at Helios One.

In this mod, Elijah (though he remains un-named) basically gathers a cult of followers and apparently attacks some of the Mojave with his cloud rockets. Though he is ultimately killed

@@ShadesMF Thats not what happens in DUST, the courier there decided that it would be a good idea to betray the NCR for yes man at hoover dam with only the upgraded securitrons (no army) then he killed oliver without passing his speech check first, which combined with other factors such as not completing dead money (elijah at the fountain not stuck in the vault or dead there) and not finishing OWB means that the courier had no back up plan at all when he betrayed the NCR. TLDR: the courier in DUST is a the perfect example of a player who doesn't think about the consequences of his actions which caused the mojave to burn.

There's something really awesome about using Ulysses' words to get Lanius to stand down, considering one of the ways you can get Ulysses to do the same at the end of Lonesome Road is to collect all of his recordings throughout The Divide, and convince him that what he's doing is just recreating the traumas he's faced with that have pushed him to wanting to nuke the long 15; In essence, the Courier can use Ulysses' statements to both talk down Lanius, and Ulysses himself.

In addition to looking across the Divide for the tapes, when you bring them to him, you can easily fuck it up by selecting a dialogue option that misinterprets what Ulysses meant in the tapes, and be forced into combat with him. It forces you to think like Ulysses and process what he meant in his recordings, rather than relying on a [100 Speech] prompt, which makes all the difference in how it feels when he agrees to stand down.

There is no shame in it! do you have any idea how many hours I've spent searching the most inane nooks and crannies of Bethesda games since Oblivion---? @@abigailhowe8302 I did finally take the time to try to find all the tapes and posters and upgrades using a walkthrough, and there is still one of the posters I can't freaking find. Even with help from the internet. I feel that. I have an insane number of hours in New Vegas. One day I'm going to have to add up how long I've logged across my 360, Xbone, and PC combined. Don't feel bad, I haven't gotten very far in Morrowind either: the lack of quest markers makes my tiny brain melt. Which sucks because I've heard so many good things about it as it's an absolute goldmine for lore, which is my favorite part of most games. But when my hand isn't help, I end up hopelessly lost.

"You think me some lesser man, some other Legate?" Lanius: dies when killed and wears full body armor made of metal to protect himself. No one really expects him to be a good leader if he ever takes over for Caesar, including fellow legion members. Had to build up his myth with Caesar's help and by being brutal even to the legion. Graham: had 5 confirmed kills on him by NCR snipers who said they headshot him. Survived bombs that leveled an entire settlement. Burned alive and tossed off the Grand Canyon but still lived. Had assassins sent to him by Caesar and killed them all. Wears a swat vest and pants, literally no other armor, not even a helmet. Caesar would probably be dead if it wasn't for Graham and is noted as the only person who had the potential to succeed Caesar. Built his own myth by not only surviving, but being skilled enough for people to take notice. Why tf did Edward try to kill Graham? Like ok he failed but really? You're going to kill the seemingly immortal dude that veterans still call the meanest, toughest person to ever walk the wasteland even though Lanius is around? Graham beat a superior general of the NCR and only failed because he got overconfident. This is the guy that can one shot snipe people with a pistol and is the guy who got you to where you are. Want to punish him? Maybe demote him or have him "regain" his honor by sending him out to do difficult missions or something. If Caesar wasn't blindingly stupid and kept Graham around the NCR wouldn't even be a challenge. Imagine a two pronged offensive with Graham and Lanius leading the attack in different locations, the NCR would shit themselves.

Because Caesar threw a rage fit. Tbh, Graham wasn't a great commander either- his plan allowed ncr snipers to decimate the legions command chain in a literal minute, and knowing they couldn't retreat the legionaries panic rushed the ncr into boulder city. If they had been able to retreat and regroup they might have stood a chance, but all the officers were gone thanks to caesars mad laws and grahams bad tactics.

Like to think even if the courier did die, an NCR or some other faction sniper with an anti material rifle was trained on Lanius during this conversation just waiting for the chance to take a shot, I would actually find it funny if you told that ranger "get the snipers ready" and if you failed the speech check, as soon as Lanius drew his sword his head just popped like a balloon and camera shoots over to an NCR Ranger on a tower in complete shock like "Holy shit I actually hit him!" Then you talk to General and ending cutscene plays "Lanius finally met his match! Not by the courier who tried to talk down the beast of the east, instead the ncr ranger named Billy who shot him dead with an anti material rifle, Billy was sung as a hero for he managed to best the man not even the courier could, soon enough he became the leader of the ncr rangers. Sadly Billy was a fighter never a political man, he soon resigned and ended up been jumped by some legion spies, apparently he wasn't good in close quarters combat and he died"

Er chaps, you do know that the legion is swarming NCR lines across the map once the battle starts? Things are literally only going well where the courier walks, because it is the courier doing the work. Brotherhood and Enclave only put in the muscle to get the courier where they want to go they are not going to win the war for the NCR, that yes is getting ripped to shreds. For all the kills a ranger gets how many troopers do you think hold it together well enough to drop a legionary or two before they get swarmed? How long do the rangers last once the trooper lines break or buckle and they are left to stand alone? Do you know just how badly the Legion actually is outnumbering NCR forces lore wise because it is real grim a picture, even rangers need to reload you know? Course if ya got the securitrons it is gg, fort and legion main force just gone like that. War won, Vegas secure. Peace through power and superior technology.

@@courier6960 Honestly it's not even that, the game locks your screen until he leaves so you can't kill him without console anyway. His base movespeed is just jacked the fuck up so if you actually fight him he's a real threat and you can't just kite the final boss by slowly walking backwards. This just has the unfortunate result of making him look absolutely fucking ridiculous when he zips away in the speech check ending. I imagine the devs looked at the absolute mess that is the gamebryo engine and at the two weeks they had to finish the game and just said fuck it make him the Flash.

​@@sirmount2636 With a B29 bomber bombing his massed army and supply lines I think just about anybody could see the futility of an attack and he has no way to counter a B29 since they have no AntiAircraft guns, no manpads and no SAMS. Though to be honest if it was better written the Legion would have been more believable if they lived underground in bunkers or tunnels like the Vietcong. In reality no matter how incompetent the NCR is a couple of vertibird gunships could have leveled ceasar's superexposed fort.

No, it's a lie because it's being used to plaster over all the other lies you've told in this. If it were genuine then it would be true (though not the smartest move, especially in the wasteland or against a foe like Caesar's Legion) but in this context it's just a way to try and convince Lanius that all your previous lies are true. Bonus irony because you are essentially using lies to defeat a superior foe. Since there is no trap and you've created a web of deceit to convince him to retreat.

Because your goal is to deceive him. It's how it works in most RPGs with a deception mechanic. In 5e, it doesn't matter what you say, or how true it is, if your goal is to deceive them into believing some sort of untruth (i.e. that the NCR has lain a trap for him, like they did for Graham), then you need to use Deception instead of Persuasion to pass the check.

It’s because when your lying to Lanius about the trap, he asks why you are doing this, and you are effectively saying in the dialogue option “it’s because there’s no honor in the tactic”. It also could be seen as the couriers line of thought, he actually DOES see honor in defeating a superior foe with lies, thus his methodology. That final line is what convinces Lanius that you are telling the truth, you appeal to his his own sense of honorable combat by pretending you have your own (when in truth you obviously don’t).

Defeating Lanius with regular speech includes an option to suggest to Lanius that war is not as important as he thinks it is. It's implied then that he will return, but perhaps not to wage war on the NCR. If Caesar is dead, there will be no rematch. Lanius would not have a reason or ability to fight the NCR. He might even ally with them.

@@bombocrusty4251 I don't think so really, Caesar's cancer appears terminal, and you can pick up throughout the Legion storyline Caesar is becoming bedridden more and more often, and can only bluff at being the powerful being he claims to be. Lanius also has the reputation as a butcher of men, Graham had a reputation as a near immortal survivor, of the two, Legionaries would be a LOT more wary of approaching a hulking butcher like Lanius, than the more man sized Graham. Finally, you also get the sense, from both the NCR, New Vegas, and Legion storylines that, yeah, Hoover Dam is the end of the Legion, and it's strength. It is made clear even if the Legion successfully defeats the NCR and takes over Hoover Dam, they can't do anything with it. It is merely a symbol for them, and even then not a particularly powerful one, at best it can intimidate the NCR and New Vegas, but New Vegas doesn't particularly care, and the NCR will just attempt to reinforce and retake the dam. Now let's say for arguements sake that Lanius takes over, or convinces Caesar to march west, something Caesar does not want to do. It would end the Legion entirely, unlike the east, there are no tribes in the NCR lands, nothing that would allow Caesar to supplement his manpower, no tribes to draw recruits from, no weapon stockpiles (remember the Legion is almost a melee only faction) to raid for supplies, depending of how stubborn the NCR is, probably even no food. With all that, you also have the structure of the Legion working against itself, the further West Caesar marches, the more likely the East is to rebel, and if the East rebels, Caesar has nowhere to draw manpower. The Legion is barely 10 years old in the game, the 19 tribes only are united under the threat of execution from Caesar, the further away Caesar gets, the less powerful that threat becomes. The NCR also loses most of the weights that are dragging it down in New Vegas if Caesar marches west, namely poor Moral, poor Logistics, and low manpower. If the Legion marches west, the NCR's supply lines shorten, the legion's lengthens. The NCR start defending their families and homes from the Legion, and will become far more stubborn, the Legion still only has Caesar's whips to their backs. The NCR can afford to pull more troops from guard duty to fight, as the caravans need not go as far, the Legion must spare more men to guard their supplies. The reality is, no matter what, Hoover Dam is the Legion's grave and tombstone.

I disagree, many people claimed Ceasar alone could rule the legion. Without him the Legion will collapse. Killing Lanius is good to prevent any chances of him reorganizing the legion into a suitable army. Lanius is portrayed as just a brute but I believe it’s possible for him to command the legion.

@@nevermind3630 I don't think Lanius could "long term" run the legion like Ceaser, I just don't see him having the patience, however what he would definitely do is come back with his Eastern Army and destroy everything in a giant orgy of destruction, probably killing both himself and the legion in the process. Hell knowing Lanius once Ceaser dies he'd probably prefer that than any "mortal" replacing his Glorious Leader, instead opting for one final blaze of glory and setting the West back another 100 years in the process no doubt. So yeah no better to kill him just in case

Bethesda wrote fallout 4 as a sequel to 3 and choose to ignore the rest of the canon, again. You can't write good stories in a preexisting universe if you aren't invested in that universe. They have to chisel away the good stuff to make their 0 effort fan fiction make sense, its why neither 3 or 4 have any developed society whatsoever. Funny thing is Bethesda themselves set up the commonwealth as a bastion of technology and society in 3, and then in 4 they copy-pasted the capital wasteland.
