Just watched it last night. LEGEND (1985) for me will always be the full film or "director's cut" at 114 minutes. It is probably what I first saw, but forgot. Did the music make me forget the better and longer version? Possibly. Just saw the full film (director's cut) again of "Legend" by Ridley Scott and I liked it better. I think I saw the original full length director's cut, but then later saw the U.S. version and did not like it enough for my memory of it to be less than optimal when making my favorite movies list. I have now put it at #119 of my favorite movies list, so almost in my top 100 favorite movies. Ridley Scott goes from my 25th favorite director to 18th place, just by having rewatched the longer "director's cut" again and remembering it right. The movie is better with the full 114 minutes (director's cut), as opposed to the 89 minutes for the U.S. version or the 93 minutes for the U.K. version. The characters feel more fully realized and the ultimate nemesis not being revealed till the latter half is much better. So now what can be said of the experience. The visuals are stunning and the movie is better without Tangerine Dream's music throughout the movie, except for two songs. I feel the song "The Dance" by Tangerine Dream is excellent as a creepy version of gypsy music due to the pauses, but is it better than the original "director's cut" song? "The Dress Waltz" by Jerrry Goldsmith is perhaps what would be in a girl's mind for a dance "The Dress Waltz." Imagine "The Dance" by Tangerine Dream playing as you see traveling gypsies set up their tents and the women dance as the men work. That such a song would pause, just makes you feel the idea of "SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES." I like the movie better also due to now realizing Tom Cruise's character is Pan (Peter Pan) but from the past before such a character like Peter Pan exists. He is an innocent of the forest and only in the child, Lili's mind. In fact, aside from the couple she visits in the forest whenever leaving her father, the king's castle, she is the only real person in the movie. The couple tells her stories and fables of fairies, sprites, fawns, goblins, dwarves, and elves. Her father is a king who takes his daughter to church. She is now hearing of Satan and so her mind creates this tale. It occurs to me that none of this is actually real except for Lily liking the woods and believing in fairy tales from a couple she visits and so I suppose considering the timeframe in history for this princess "The Dress Waltz" by Jerry Goldsmith is more logical. I think my vote is still the Tangerine Dream song "The Dance." Even if it is the wrong fit for the movie. Also "Loved by the Sun" by Tangerine Dream for the last sequence and credits is amazing and so that song I'd add to the original director's cut. The movie ends properly with Lili and Jack (Tom Cruise) not together as he isn't real anyway. Jack is realizing she is growing up and so even he is separated from the rest of the fables of the woods at the end, as that is the way she wants to remember him, as hers and not another's. So what happened is Lili learned Satan desires humans and so she had added him to the stories in her mind. She realizes the innocence of youth must face the reality of her father's church. Here let me explain it this way: "The Bringer of Light" Part One: "In Heaven" He sought after knowledge and looked to the unknown. He studied his own pupils, to see if seeds had been grown. He looked to his God, for insight and power. Compared to us all he was on top of a tower. He tested the limits; he doubted it all. The taste of freedom, he heard the call. His name preceded him. He was loved by the masses. His pupils believed in him and stuck with him like molasses. Some started to worship him, which he told them not to do. Only chosen could see Him. Were others a waste of time? That's what it seemed to us was written on that sign. God must have found out by others of all his fans, because He wouldn't see him, but put him up on a stand. God asked him if all he heard was true. Lucifer agreed and told all that he knew. He tested the limits, he doubted it all, the taste of freedom, he heard the call. He was cast out as evil. He was threatened with pain. They told him they'd chain him if he tried to remain. Those that loved him followed to face the unknown; besides, we couldn't bear to see him alone. He did nothing wrong, as far as we could see. He loved the God, he wanted to be. Part Two: "For Love" I chose punishment also, with the angel I loved. I was treated as dirty, tho clean as a dove. In heaven, we are taught love comes first of all. If my heart condemns me, then I welcome the fall. For love, I have left or forsaken the light. But with him by my side, I fear not the night. Black coldness so strong I felt I couldn't go on living, but for the first time I really thanked God for the life I was living. Through tests love is strengthened. It grows with time and the more you want to be together is a very good sign. We passed through the darkness; we straddled the line. We drew more strength than possible by our love all the time. For love, I have left or forsaken the light, but with him by my side, I fear not the night. I just followed my heart; that has to be right. Part Three: "On Earth" God told all that left for Earth, there would be no chance for rebirth. And that we would receive eternal damnation, in a place called hell, yet, knowing all this, we still fell. On Earth where we now dwell and do as we please; we decided God wouldn't care if you bend down on one knee. The true God who made us, both above and below, knew what each would be like, and loved us as so. All of us are beautiful in our own way and all are important in the part that we play. In heaven, we accepted all that was said, but now to us that god, as God, is dead. For if he made us to burn for all eternity, the one lacking love is not us, but He. This sort of sums up the idea of the story. Can this world with fallen angels and stories of fables from pagans be put into a story for Lili to comprehend it. She knows the devil wants her per the litagy of the church and the sprites of the forest are less logical to her suddenly. She thinks of things and hopes for things for herself as she is 15 years old and wanting more for her life than her life at home with her dad, the king, in the castle. And yet she knows her desires may make her fall, and so she imagines meeting the one who desires to have her and realizes he is evil. Again, the poem is not the truth. The angels who fell from their former glory are in an abyss awaiting judgement unless they can enter flesh (human or animal) but to them all of it is degrading compared to what they are in their mind. In fact, the alternative of finding the Holy Spirit in men raising the human to be better in relationship than an angel makes them sick and so they often war with the people of God. Lili sees the sprites of the pagans fighting to win her from evil, but by the end of the story she is running back to the real world realizing her father is teaching her the truth. Hence, the true ending is the "director's cut" of Lili wanting to believe Jack loves her even though he is told as a Pan of the forest who does not age or lose innocence. She has past that and so she leaves him, even as she sees him as waiting for her to return to the forest. Meanwhile, since she sees him as a possible relationship, he is becoming distant from the other characters of the woods and so therefore Jack (Tom Cruise) is not with the others who remain in the forest. Lili is realizing there is evil in the world. The church is teaching her to not be so innocent. These are the only movies on my favorites list which can really be compared to it. Susan does not believe the other world of Narnia anymore if you read the books. Lucy does believe in Narnia as she gets older. Ofelia (Ivana Baquero Macías), at 11 years old, in Pan's Labyrinth has it much worse than merely pagan stories compared to church stories, as she is dealing with Facism vs. the church in Spain. Dorothy of the Wizard of Oz was suppose to be a young Shirley Temple at 10 years old and would have been dealing only with a neighbor who hated her cat and a tornado in Kansas by comparison. Judy at 16 years old dealing with such stuff is a comedy by comparison. 5) Narnia: the Lion, the witch, and the wardrobe (2005) 31) Pan’s Labyrinth (2006) - Spanish with English caption 56) The Wizard of Oz (1939) 119) Legend (1985) - director's cut (full 114 minutes) It is weird to think a song matched to a movie could ruin your memory of it. The movie has such brilliant and stunning, magical scenes.

​@@B_Ella1269 It's the original score from your perspective, but that's only because the studio required it for the US release. The rest of the world got the Goldsmith score as the original. Fair point though. An unfamiliar score tends to kill the nostalgia angle for the American audiences who grew up with the Tangerine Dream version.

The Director's Cut has a much longer transformation scene, it also is more quest-like in structure - Jack has to guess a riddle, as well as outsmart Mucklebones Meg.

And FYI guys. I’ve seen both cuts of this film. I prefer the theatrical cut, solely for the Tangerine Dream score and the beautiful song in that cut. When the movie Beetlejuice was being test screened, a cut without the Danny Elfman score was shown to audiences. And it tested horribly! Later, the exact same cut of the film was shown, except now with that classic Danny Elfman score, and it tested through the roof! The music of a film can have a profound influence on the entire feature and how the audience engages with the material. The Tangerine Dream score outweighs Ridley Scott’s director’s cut vision for my tastes.

I grew up with the theatrical version. However, I do prefer the director’s cut. Although I do like the Tangerine Dream mystical score, it kinda makes it sound too RISKY BUSINESS cool, making the character of Jack ala Joel Goodsen cool, whereas the Jerry Goldsmith score it gives it more of an enchantment magical feel and Jack being innocent and not too confident yet strong with his underlying strength.

@@MoviesTubeYou0675 The Jerry Goldsmith score is very forgettable. That actually sounds like it’s more of a temp score for test screenings. The Tangerine Dream score sounds nothing like or evokes anything of the movie Risky Business. That’s insane. It’s a unique mystical score that is far more memorable and impactful than the generic Goldsmith score in the director’s cut.

Fun fact - the Legend forest set caught fire during filming, and the resulting blaze burned down the 007 stage! They had to rebuild the entire forest, not to mention the Bond stage...

If my memory is working today, the way I heard it the gas that fueled the fire in the winter forest scenes gathered up in the rafters of the sound stage. They didn’t vent the upper part of the building and nobody realized how bad it was. Then one day almost as if on cue all the birds who had been released during various scenes and were hanging around up there came pouring out of the stage doors in a feathery mass. Had to have been a freaky thing to see! Then the building burned to the ground.

Mia Sara is in a science fiction action movie with Jean - Claude Van Damme from 1994 called Timecop , maybe a consideration for Better Late Than Never. I first saw Legend in 1985 and it was only when I bought the blu ray a few years ago discovered that the Director's Cut was a Blu Ray extra so I wasn't complaining.

While there are additional scenes in this version, the biggest difference between the Director's Cut and the American/Tangerine Dream Cut is that Lily's singing is part of the plot in this version. The reason Jack is able to guess Gump's riddle is because Lily was singing about it earlier. Well, Tangerine Dream's score didn't mesh at all with Lily's singing so every scene that involved her singing had to be cut. This entire movie came about because Ridley Scott became obsessed with wanting to do a fantasy film. (In fact, a lot of decisions regarding this movie from him seemed to be born out of crazed obsessions he momentarily got from time to time.) So he basically hired the writer who did the film to give him a fantasy script with three requirements: (1) a hero named Jack, (2) a villain named Darkness, and (3) "the fastest steeds". The script that was turned in would have been closer in scope to one of the LOTR movies than the end product; and would have involved Jack battling a dragon and giant spiders, Lily turning into a cat monster and siding with Darkness (including sleeping with him), and culminating in a massive battle between a literal "army of Darkness" and an army of fae. This was the script that "sold" the producers although they wanted massive cuts due to the budget required, and the ensuing script editors cut it down further eventually to its current version. Ironically, Lily turning into a cat monster was one of the last things to go. Even the early storyboards still had it.

Talk about a blast from the past. Telling my age but I was 11 when this came out. Didn’t see it in theaters but saw it on VHS 📼 when I was home sick from school. Needless to say I saw it multiple times that day. Had a similar experience with Lady Hawke that came out that same year. Tim Curry is just amazing, hands down one of the best performers that ever graced the screen. You were right, his smirk, even through all the prosthetics and makeup is one of the clear signs it’s him. I also had no idea Robert Picardo was in this. Playing the Witch, WOW! Another role he was in, that is also out of character is the 80s horror werewolf film, The Howling. He puts the “C” in creepy!

I actually watched Legend for a first time as a child when my parents were paying for HBO and the movie was on heavy rotation on that channel. I agree that the synth version of Legend's sound track is superior, more for how memorable it is compared to the more prosaic, rote fantasy track. When I didn't hear it cut in during the opening of the movie, it literally felt like the wrong film. This movie gave me a deep appreciation for Tim Curry's acting chops, Mia Sara's beauty and the rigors of physical acting endured by little people in the kinds of roles they often get pigeon holed into. Although it isn't one of my favorite old school fantasy films story wise, it did leave an indelible mark on my memory as a visibly memorable spectacle of a cinema.

The director's cut really needs someone to edit in pieces of Tangerine Dream's score into it, and maybe write more music like it to fill out the full soundtrack. Fun fact: Jim Henson's 1986 Labyrinth was filmed more or less at the same time and studios and both teams would reunite for lunch. So you'd have David Jareth the Goblin King Bowie and Tim Darkness Curry eating together. What were the odds! The studio itself actually burned down during production because of the build-up of gas from the lighting. Most of the set disappeared.The archive images are pretty impressive! Also, Goldsmith's version reminds me of a fairytale while Tangerine Dream reminds me of a dream. Incredible how a soundtrack can change how you see a movie :)

Legend was actually shot in advance of Labyrinth, not at the same time. Alex Thomson was cinematographer for both films, and according to an article Thomson wrote for American Cinematographer, he moved on to shooting Labyrinth after Legend's production had wrapped.

I always say that more people need to react to this movie. It is fantasy GOLD and I wish there was an extended cut with the Tangerine Dream score. That being said, this is my favorite movie of all time and I'd watch it every single day as a toddler, and still watch it at least once a month. When I was teen I watched the ORIGINAL European version that was 94 min and later I did check out the US version with Tangerine Dream. I personally prefer the European version cause its fuller movie and the Jerry Goldsmith fantasy score fit the movie genre being fantasy movie. Tangerine Dream score is 80s synth music and its ok but not sure it has aged well. I finally watch the director version in my early twenties and feel its the BEST version.

This is a great way to start off a Thursday morning! 😊 1:32 Of all my times watching this movie, I never knew that Ridley Scott directed this. I grew up with this movie in the 80s. And it's always been one of my favorite Tom Cruise films. And Tim Curry is fantastic as Darkness. That character used to scare the 'you know what' out of me when I was younger. LOL! Another Tom Cruise movie that I always recommend, and if one or neither of you have seen it, is "The Outsiders". And for Tim Curry, if one or neither of you have seen it, I very highly recommend the movie "Clue". Such a fun movie! Looking forward to the next reaction. 😊

Love this movie, it is such a fixture of my childhood. I can’t even remember the first time I saw this movie, I would have been 4 or 5. I remember it always being on HBO along with Fraggle Rock. My Mom told me when I was an adult that the swamp witch always scared me as a kid, but I was way into Darkness 😂 It is refreshing to know that at such a young age I already knew who I was and what I was into. Tom Cruise must have knees of steel, I have never seen some one squat so much in a movie 😆 Great Reaction, so happy you guys watch such a wide variety of films and television. Another 80’s fantasy from my childhood is “Mio in the Land of Faraway” from 1987, if you ever get the chance give it a watch, you will recognize a couple of faces for sure.

When I think of "Legend," I think of the Tangerine Dream score. The only downside to that version is that the scenes and lines of dialogue are chopped up. When I first saw what was then the European version on DVD, I was surprised at how much more movie there was.

Jerry Goldsmith’s was the original music, a version between the US theatrical cut and the director’s cut with Goldsmith’s music was released in Europe and elsewhere, where it was much better received than the U.S. cut was in the States. Ridley sat through a bad test screening in L.A. that seriously shook his confidence which led to him agreeing to yank half an hour out of the movie and overseeing the Tangerine Dream replacement score - which they had to crank out in like a week and a half. I love me some Tangerine Dream but I adore Goldsmith’s music for “Legend” - and it was the TD version I saw first.

The Jerry Goldsmith score is amazing, however Tangerine Dream score is good(their score to "Near Dark" score is my favorite). But Goldsmith's score fits better, he is a master at his craft.

The impact this movie had on me when I saw it for the first time at 8/9 is so hard to quantify. It was huge though, and for the longest time it felt like no one else had heard of it, making me feel like it was a fever dream. Even as a kid I was only sorta impressed with Jack/Tom, my baby goth heart was immediately taken by Tim Currey as The Darkness.

Tangerine Dream, The Dance, and Loved by the Sun were always my favorite songs from the movies as a kid since I grew up with the theatrical cut on vhs. Definitely, one of my childhood favorites.

But I will say this about the director cut, it did explain what happened to Gump’s fiddle, he smashed it while having a tantrum lol and I didn’t know the couple in the woods had a baby😮, they must have thought it was too dark of a scene for the Theatrical Cut, AlsoI never noticed how Christmasy the end credits music sounded till Robert pointed it out. I always considered Legend a Christmas movie because it has Elves in it lol , And one last thing , I don’t know if they cut out the beginning scene where they show Darkness in a black light from this director cut or if they added that scene in later for the Theatrical Cut. It looks so cool.

Aawww... you didn't show one of the most impressive things in this movie. The sound that the hoof of Darkness does when stepping out of the mirror. That sound design, is wicked.

Fae creatures are very peculiar in how they can be very loving but also very harsh and devious being creatures of nature. Like nature they can be loving or destroying which is why their favor was important but risky.

The Jerry Goldsmith score is superior to the Tangerine Dream score for me, and I grew up with the Tangerine Dream score on the theatrical cut. The Directors cut is also the best version of the film the U.S. theatrical cut has a pointless opening crawl since they assumed American audiences were idiots I guess. If you want to see more Robert Picardo suit work check out Explores he plays the alien Wak in that film.

I was 16 when this came out, and I was one of the few weirdo kids in my small southern town that played D&D, had seen Rocky Horror AND liked Tangerine Dream (US theatrical release soundtrack was TD). At the time I thought it was one of the most amazing movies I'd ever seen. I've watched it dozens of times. As an adult, I see a lot of unnecessary cheese, but it's still a beautiful movie, and the 'synth' soundtrack is classic 80s electronica.

I grew up watching this movie, so the theatrical cut with the Tangerine Dream soundtrack is the definitive one. I've never seen the version you guys watched, and some of those new-to-me scenes were very jolting, when I was expecting different dialogue, especially in the early stuff with Jack and Lily. And then Gump with the riddle threw me off, too. But I did like the extended Meg Mucklebones scene.

If you've never seen fish-eye used that way in sets, I'm guessing you guys haven't watched Krull. It was a bit of a thing in some of the lesser known 80s fantasy films. Made "evil layers" seem more menacing and out-of-reality.

@@LatetotheParty it's definitively cheesy. And is a lot like Legend in that the plot is just a series of high fantasy tropes and is meant more to be experienced than examined. But it's one of those 80s films I'll always watch when I have the chance, like Legend and Flash Gordon.

Saw this movie as an under 8 year old kid (I think I was closer to 6 actually) and it scared the holy hell out of me. The Devil was the scariest thing ever and when I got older I had to research what this movie was because I could vividly remember that Devil character. Also that swamp demon also scared the bejesus out of me
