I'm one of those people who enjoy Story more than Gameplay. As long as It has a Story to drive me, I'm almost doomed to finish it. Personally I grew up with The Legend of Spyro Series, and I like them. I love the story. And I do agree the gameplay is 100% boring after awhile. But it does change in LoS 3 it has a lot more character and uniqueness. But those don't come until later. Legend of Spyro is a alternative spin on the Spyro franchise. They should have just had different dragons to play the part and they wouldn't be so Hated. Bad Move Game developers Bad move Still better than Skylanders or Enter the Dragonfly tho.

Blazetailx •-• at least skylanders has good gameplay
@medes5597 Жыл бұрын
If they'd have had different dragons, I don't think it would even have the nostalgia vote everyone in this comment section is repping. It gets away with a lot being people's first spyro game and introducing people to the rest of the franchise and the fun character of spyro. If it was a dragon no one cared about? Yeah there wouldn't be much disagreement on how bad this game is. Even the part you like most - the story - it's impact is in large part predicated on it being spyro who people have a wealth of feeling for. Had this been a genetic dragon? Yeah I don't think anyone would care as much about the story. Just a bad game, saved partly by Spyro.

1. This game does not take place in the original timeline, so this is a different universe. 2. It wasn't meant to be like the classic games, it was meant to be its own unique take for a new audience. 3. The reason why you don't get the choice to freely explore areas is because it's told as a "storybook" as I like to call it where as the classic game are adventures games (but I do agree it's annoying since when you complete the game all you do is just keep repeating it). What you should really be doing is going into these games as NOT a Spyro fan but as someone who is completely new to it. Treat this game and its sequels as something separate from the original series (since classic, legend and skylanders are considered to be separate cannons).
@1fishmob8 жыл бұрын
As well, if you need evidence to prove it does not exist in the same universe: the origin stories between both Spyros are different. Similar, but different. As well, I hate to burst your bubble: but you're in a minority from what I've seen: a lot of people like the first two of these games, and REALLY hate the third.

If it was, I'd go with A Hero's Tail because at least that game had the bright, colorful, cartoony nature that was present in the older Spyro games. Legend of Spyro was just depressing to play through with the mundane and dark level design and just all around bleak atmosphere.

What is up with plat-former franchises and always shifting towards a more combat/melee based system whenever people decide to reboot them? Sonic attempted it twice, one with the main-franchise/continuity before doing the same thing with a spin-off, though the second attempt was a lot more focused (still failed technically and mechanically-wise). We all know Crash did it as well. And when they emphasize these mechanics, the execution is always uninspired/generic. In Spyro’s case it's catering to too many demographics, the simple combat and limited combos are supposed to be accessible to young gamers while the narrative is attempting to appeal to the followers of the original by maturing with age just like they did. I can give them props for actually acknowledging the fanbase ageing and implementing it with a more mature tone, but the reason why the original Spyro's were successful with this was because Spyro himself was simple. The colour-palette/graphics were simple, the characters; dialogue and plot were simple and it revolved around a simple concept: it was focused and therefore could provide a more consistent experience. However, The Legend of Spyro is a reboot with the aim of appealing to a more experienced-audience, people who grew up on Spyro and wish to see the series evolve like they did. Yet - it simplifies it's gameplay to harken back to the originals to a point where it almost completely nullifies the depth of the combat/platforming but that completely contrasts with what the concept of this reboot is. Simplification can be a benefit, it can be executed to improve convience and can be improve accessibility and even a great entrance point for those who struggle or are beginning to grasp the genre, but this does it to an exaggerated degree. The basic combat mechanics could be justified in the original trilogy as it was a platformer and that wasn't the main emphasis, the emphasis was the platforming (self-explanatory) and it even added to it as Spyro could traverse wide-distances without breaking his flow due to the variety of attacks and elements he had and how little difficulty he had in dispersing his enemies. There were patterns added later to the enemies move-set such as equipment and also elements, but even they were heavily-telegraphed and fairly basic to grasp. Technically, it was deceptively simple. It had the appearance of a PS1 game, but the advancements underneath were leagues ahead of its time to the advid eye at the time. The Legend of Spyro is supposed to be a slower-experience as the genre it focuses on encourages predicting and memorizing styles to act appropriately and thus requires the time to delegate to this, yet for some reason it retains the same basic mechanics and crams them into what is supposed to be as already stated: a more-complex genre, additional difficulty also accenuates this problem with the agonizingly limited combos and move-set. Not to mention, the graphics are extremely more detailed and defined but they are applying to the same simple landscapes that the original had. The colour-palette and personality save those in the original. But the reboot is trying to convey a more serious/down-to-earth universe therefore we are stuck with landscapes like the original Spyro but bolstered in detail and completely lacking that innocent charm, therefore we're left with bland environments that have little to remember from (complete lack of memorability and anything unique). The platforming also loses that same momentum and feeling of exhilaration and fast progression that the originals had, and comes across also extremely basic with the mechanics doing nothing to add to it due to the greater emphasis on combat. Rather than the combat being the pace-breaker, the platforming becomes the pace-breaker. But the originals went at a pace in which that was necessary, the player could manipulate the mechanics to a point where they maintain a flow and not be interrupted, so the few cases in which they were stopped a much-needed were necessary pace-breaker for the player to recover before developing on it even further when they were released again. However, in the reboot's case: the entire game is a pace breaker, and the platforming as a result just slug's and limits the player down even-more in what was already a slow experience. Therefore the entire game is an inconsistent experience of ideas borrowed/homages to and from the originals and completely new concepts that the originals deliberately tried to avoid. Reboots generally have this problem out of a confusion of evolution and nostalgia. But Spyro's in particular as what it evolved from was already extremely basic and the originals revelled in that fact, whereas the reboot stacks additional layers but is upon a foundation that does not sustain that kind of complexity well and topples. Sorry for the novel, I'm just extremely passionate about reboots and how they can build upon what the originals whilst still retaining an identity of its own and a clear image of what it provides rather than replicating it entirely and mixing in something that does not compliment or substantiate it well at all and just comes off as a confused mess of original and "the" original ideas. Never-the-less another entertaining video as always, Jak! It did however the lack the memorable moments and quotable lines of your other reviews, but it's always nice to see your opinions on the Spyro franchise and I know you'll fix that in the next review, which I am pumped as hell for by the way!

Many people are divided on this game, and I understand why. The stale gameplay and lack of challenge makes it uninspired to those LOOKING for challenges and interactive stuff, but this is actually my favorite game of all time because of story, the dark and eerie shadingg and Gothic art style, the music and repetition. For me repetition can be soothing, and applying fantasies from my mind makes it more enjoyable. I play this game to enjoy story and to relax, and David Spade as Sparx is brilliant for the sarcastic, dry role. All opinions of course, but i do understand how that’s not everyone’s cup of tea

I haven't played it since I was a kid, but I liked it then. However, it's very likely that the only reason I liked it was because its a Spyro game. After all, the only Spyro games I hated as a kid were Eternal Night and Enter the Dragonfly (guess why) I do remember that the Elite Enemies were too confusing for me to figure out, the combat was a lot of fun, exploring the environment to find armor and experience was a highlight of the game, and I was devastated to find out that the movie was cancelled. Without nostalgia, I'd probably rate it at around 6/10. But I definitely have to replay this and the other PS2 Spyro games at some point.

The keyword for this review is "SAME!" haha Oh man this game. I still remember when I first bought this game back in 07 it and how much of a chore this game was. Everything you said about it is pretty much what I think as well. It's sad because if I had to compare Crash of the Titans to Spyro A New Beginning, I felt that Spyro had more potential to being a hit, what with the continuation of breath abilities and seeing more fantasy inspired worlds and characters (even though I still much prefer the cartoony nature & tone of the original games). I could just feel your disinterest watching you place this game and reminded me why I haven't touched the game in the last 8 years. It was so polarizing that I didn't bother getting the other 2 games though at this point, I'm curious and I want to try my hand at reviewing them some day in the future so I'll most likely be picking them up. I'm curious to see what you have in store for the next few videos regarding these titles, I winced at the part when you said you were going to review the handheld ports, so many freaking games! I actually heard good stuff about Dawn of the Dragon and the GBA port to Eternal Night. Unlike Crash of the Titans and Banjo Kazooie Nuts & Bolts (IMO), I think this game is pretty mediocre even though I prefer Spyro over Banjo-kazooie and Crash Bandicoot which is a real shame. I would rather play Enter the Dragonfly (despite having some crazy shot) because it isn't this damn repetitive. I hear really really really bad things about Eternal Night I really wonder how he's going to compare that one to ETD. I hear just about as much bad stuff. The GBA port to A New Beginning is by far the worst in the Spyro series as I've tried it on an online emulator. Fuck that game.

Warden of the North You're going to have to try it sooner or later. A New Beginning is mediocre, but not really bad. It's sort of bad, but not god awful. You just have to wait and see. The LOS series as a whole is divisive in opinions like Crash of the Titans, Mind Over Mutant, Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts, and Wrath of Cortex. I bet there are some that adore them, and other that think that they'd even rather play Enter the Dragonfly (I think it's a mixed bad, but we're assuming the people who think that game is terrible) over the whole LOS series. I'd rather play Enter the Dragonfly over a New Beginning, but that doesn't make that game god awful.

I issue Spyro modders a challenge: Take one of the original games, throw in some Legend graphics, multiply the amount of enemies, and give them small health bars. Most importantly, don't change the level designs or the portal system. Anyone else think that would make a much deeper "serious" Spyro game than this?

have you played any of the final fantasies?

I had Dawn of The Dragon for a while when I was younger. You might be happy to hear that (at least on console) the Legend of Spyro series supposedly get better from game to game. So (excluding handhelds) the worst is probably over.

I sure had a great fucking day!

Kinda reminds me of why i cant bring myself to finish Dragon Age Inquisition. Because its the same fucking thing. The story is the only thing keeping it interesting, everything else is so dull. Why is it that game devs think games like this are fun?
@decadentgamer31088 жыл бұрын
I think it's because the devs believe that if the game has amazing graphics or a very "epic" story, it'll be enough to make up for repetitive gameplay. Unfortunately for them, that's not the case a lot of the time.
@alanluedike6318 жыл бұрын
Tbh, I really enjoy dragon age inquisition. It does get repetitive which sucks but have you played mage by any chance? Only fun class in the game.
@KeybladeWielderXV8 жыл бұрын
No, im a warrior. I've always sucked at being a mage in most games.

I was excited for this game way back when it was pretty much new, but never got the game, and looking back at it I am glad I never did.

Meh. I'd rather play this than the first 3 Spyro's any day of the week

Well shit, not even a quarter of the way into the video and I get a dragonfly sex lesson. That's what I call content. I actually wanted to try and start reviewing some of the more obscure titles in my collection. Do you have any tips?
@SquareEyedJak8 жыл бұрын
Just start. Start off with something you're more familiar with to get your bearings. Most of us are self taught :)
@johnisblessed47828 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the advice! I'll probably start with Dust: An Elysian Tail and move on to other games that deserve more attention. Can't wait for your next review!

***** Well Skylanders is a ridiculous cash grab fad that even Disney and Nintendo are doing it
@BillyBob_McSanchez8 жыл бұрын
***** Well, it's Activision's business mentality. Hopefully, Sony doesn't sucker themselves into this cash grab. I sure hope not since they hardly have any kids game exclusives besides Little Big Planet, Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, and Sly Cooper

***** Hopefully the Crash remaster on PS4 will make up for Activisions shenanigans
@BillyBob_McSanchez8 жыл бұрын
***** The problem with that is that Sony isn't a developer. I would say Retro Studios can probably do a better job. After all, they did make Donkey Kong Country Returns and it was true to the classics, but the only downside is that it would make Crash a Nintendo excluive

Square Eyed Jak Yeah, when sixth and seventh generation of consoles were the thing, I mostly played old PC games from the 90's, because we didn't have either console or good computer.

The ''Dark Master'' character is, not a baboon, nor even present in the first two games of this series. Just so that's cleared up ;)
