I know I'm sounding old, but when I played this game in the elementary school it was cutting edge technology. It took sharing secrets with other nintendo nerds at school and months to beat this game. There was no internet. This guy is showing everyone how to beat it in hours. Zelda was an obsession and still is my favorite game played ever. Even after I've owned every gaming system up to Xbox one. Now any time I cant figure something out in a game, I just google it. We have no patience or think its impossible to figure these games out. But its not. We beat alot of games before google and can still do it! Who's With Me! Ahhh fuck it... I'll just google it

When my oldest son was in kindergarten in 1987 they had a school candy bar sale. So this was my wife's and first kid sale. We both worked at the same aerospace company in the OC. I was Engineering test she was the nail girl. Had 500 employees. Sold 1000 candy bars. Most by anybody ever a record that probably still stands. First prize was an NES system that had Zelda. No help is, no hints, had to find everything. My friends would come and play this thing for hours. All in our early 20's Took 3 months to finish. Then we find out a 2nd quest.

Trial and error. Back in the good old days, people used to get maps of hyrule, whether they got them off the internet and printed them or got a foldout map in a strategy guide, etc, but then we would burn a bush here, bomb a wall there and use pens and markers to draw on our map. Hang out with friends and compare maps, etc. It was fun, but with information so readily available nowadays, you don't see that kind of persistence around much anymore. ~ Caleb

NES Zelda games should have started the story of Zelda off with Ganondorf (the human sorcerer) as the main/final boss in Legend of Zelda 1. And after his death in the 1st game Ganondorf should have appeared as his dead Demon self in his 2nd form known as " Gannon" on The Adventure of Link 2 (the 2nd NES game).

I played this game when it originally came out and had no freaking concept of what the hell I was supposed to do. I would run around for like 15 minutes killing stuff then quit. I couldn't even beat the first dungeon. I finally tried this game again awhile back with a walkthrough and beat it. This game was considerably easier when compared to Zelda 2. My god, that game was a bitch. Fucking Thunderbird and Dark Link.

I followed this walkthrough when I was a child. I never grew up with an NES. I was born in 1997. But my God mother's children had a gamecube with Zelda Collectors Edition. Zelda NES was the one game I ever got attached to. I was so invested, I even got my Godmother's children hooked as well (even though they love Ocarina of Time a little more) This walkthrough single-handedly came in clutch for us as we tried to find all secrets and beat all dungeons. And I thank you for this series!

It was very typical for video games to be difficult at that point in time, and in the general scheme of things, the Legend of Zelda is actually a pretty remarkably easy NES game in comparison to a lot of other games around then as well as very forgiving, allowing you to not only appear back at the start of a dungeon if you die, (as many times as you want no less,) but there is a built in save function on the cartridge, something very uncommon for it's time. =) Cheers. ~ Caleb

In my town, we had a candy store / video game shop. It was little dinky building but all of the younger kids went there to spend our allowances. One of the cool things they did was trade in games, no downside, just swap one NES game for another and they constantly had hundreds of different ones and ordered new ones. Myself and all my friends, separately, ended up sticking with several of what we experienced as "the best" NES games. We ALL had the original Legend of Zelda. ~ Caleb

I was eight years old when this came out back in 1986. I remember how almost every kid in school had an NES. We would swap games with each other and tell each other secrets we discovered. Once somebody found out that bushes could be burned, we tried to burn every single bush in the game, to check if there was a hidden secret. Kids can be real determined if they want to xD.

I am not sure why, but my game is not coded in the same way as yours. The first cave you bombed in your game is not there at all in mine. The entrance where you awakened the statue guy, is level 2 on my game. I suppose this may be due to the fact that I am playing a rom which may have been rewritten, but thats weird. People usually re-write games in order to achieve some level of molestation, as in Link Gets Laid. No pun intended. I will try downloading another version. I am also unsure why I have been playing Zelda games for over 20 years now, and am only just beginning to attempt the game that started it all.....

I never considered it! I did enter my name as Zelda! Since I was a kid, though I didn't play that game, I knew that entering your name as Zelda would create some change in the game, but I thought it was only to change the music, or something benign.

Originally, a lot of video game developers were often working on arcade games, which were intentionally hard to force you to pay more money to continue playing. Early home consoles were attempting to tap into this market and appeal to those players who were used to that. As it grew in popularity, however, games have tended to become easier to appeal to a wider audience and make them more accessible. ~ Caleb

Looking back on this masterpiece, I've noticed that the action in this game had more consistency than the newer versions of Zelda. All you had to do was walk around the corner and HORDES of enemies would come swarming at you. However, in the modern games, if you kill an enemy, sometimes you have to travel a long distance before the next serious enemy fight starts happening usually because of the bigger additions of puzzles, cutscenes and larger scaled maps.

I used to play this game when I was 6-7 years old and I got to beat it (just first quest, on second quest I could never get past level 2). I remember the gamebox came with a map guide which you could unfold and there were question marks in certain "blocks" of the map, where you needed to figure out something. Now that I'm 25 and I see this walkthrough, I think without that map I couldve never been able to beat the game as 6 yr old kid.

There is also a secret room underneath one of those stone-like soldiers that come to life, close to the second dungeon. The location is one square area down the second dungeon, one right..and then one up. It's the soldier on the right >< Hope it helps somewhat to the ones that still play the retro games~ ^^- Like me!

My first NES game was the original Legend of Zelda. I regret to this day not knowing where it is, it would've been awesome to keep it just for the many memories. I do agree though that the sense of direction was completely disregarded in the game and the fact that at the time I couldn't speak/read English made the game that much more difficult. But by gosh I loved that game =_=
