My 68 Cougar came with 14 inchers. I have normal offset Crager SS on the front and rather deep reverse offset SS on the back. The back is raised. What would be a good size in 15 inches for this car?

Biggest problem I have with rims is getting the correct centerbore size. Nobody talks about centerbore. If the centerbore of the rim is bigger than the hub, or mounting surface on the drum, then all of the weight is on the lugs. Seeing cars with broken or missing lugs? That's why. Looking at 15" rims in the aftermarket everything is 3" centerbore or more. I think they do that to ensure a universal fit.
@donrush56905 жыл бұрын
They are designed to carry all the weight on the lugs safely as not all their wheels in the day had a tight center hole. It will not break a lug.

You would probably be best to post that question over at classiccougarcommunity.com/forum/. We can tell you what the stock options were on these cars, but the guys at the Classic Cougar Community have tried all sorts of wheel/tire size combos and could give you some feedback from their experience on what they have found works.

Just wondering what is the I'D number for that color paint. That is a beautiful cougar color. I think that's the original color for my 70 cougar.
@WestCoastClassicCougar5 жыл бұрын
It was a '67 only color called Cinnamon Frost (code V). In 1970 the closest thing would probably be Bright Gold Metallic / Poly (code K). If you still have your door tag you can see what the color code is. This site has a lot of useful info including color chips: fordmercurycougarxr7.com/paint_samples/paint_samples_1970

Thank you for the great video! May I ask you a question? I’ve heard that with these Legendary aluminum series wheels that the lug stud bore if very thick compared to original stamped steel wheels, meaning your lug studs aren’t long enough to fit these wheels or get sufficient thread engagement from your lug nuts. Have you experienced this issue? How thick are the lug stud bores on these wheels and how long of a lug but stud has been needed to run these wheels? Would I need to swap out all of my lug but studs? Thank you!
@WestCoastClassicCougar4 жыл бұрын
All aluminum wheels are thicker than the stock stamped steel wheels; the Legendary wheels DO NOT require that you swap out your lugs, they just require using the lug nuts specifically made to work with them: secure.cougarpartscatalog.com/lug-nut-chrome-acorn-3/4-magnum-wheel-each-legendary-series-repro-1967-1973-mercury-cougar-/-1967-1973-ford-mustang.html?sessionthemeid=26. They will not work with the standard lug nuts used with the stamped steel wheels.

@@WestCoastClassicCougar No freakin' way! I bought legendary wheels from a distributor 6 months ago, and when I couldn't fit the lug nuts their tech department told me to return the wheels! I had no idea there was a special lug nut just for this. My goodness...you are awesome. Thank you.

It really depends on your car, they are all a little different you're best to just get your measurements as it sits on the ground. Personally I'm going to try and fit 245/45R17 front and 275/40R17 back on my 68 if I can ever get the 9 inch swap done, but I plan to take it to a tire shop and make sure we get all the right measurements and only buy once.

The wheels vary slightly in price depending on the style, but you can view them here: secure.cougarpartscatalog.com/store/Search.aspx?CatID=15901&SearchTerms=legendary%20&Type=AND I am not finding any indications of why, but we show to have discontinued the SD Luggage Rack: secure.cougarpartscatalog.com/luggage.html

I HATE THE LOOK OF THE NEW ALUMINUM OUTER WHEEL SHELL BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF THE LOOK OF A THIN STEEL RIM BEAD. ANY INFO WOULD BE APPRECIATED,,,I WILL WORRY ABOUT THE RUST MYSELF. THANK YOU

The style steel wheels use to be made by Specialty Wheels in Portland Oregon. They were acquired by Croker Tire. Since this happened the quality has tanked. We had repeated returns where the wheels were so bad they could not be balanced, which has unfortunatley forced us to stop carrying those. As far as I know the style steel wheels are only offered in 14x6, 14x7, 15x6, and 15x7. We have a couple 14x6 left, but once thier gone, their gone.

Hello Don.......thanks for the links ...there is much conflicting info on what fits.....in general...with 4.25 backspace....lets say we are using 15 x 7 legendary wheel series....for a 1969 Eliminator.....will 255's fit in back and 235's front?....rule of thumb...suspension variance not withstanding? Trying to go max size......I appreciate your insight ! Would like to go wider than 225 front......if possible. The info on the links seems to contradict...various opinions but no conclusion....thanks again in advance for additional insight ...

The early Cougars were meant to be an upgrade to what was available in the Mustang line, mostly on the creature comforts level, or as this article states, the early Cougars were “a Mustang in a tuxedo” : www.macsmotorcitygarage.com/mustang-in-a-tuxedo-the-1967-mercury-cougar/. As part of this, Ford never offered anything smaller than the V-8 289 in the 67 -73 Cougars.

It is sad to say, but these wheels are higher quality than almost every US made vintage wheel we have tried. We had to discontinue our US made wheels because they were no longer a reliable product.
