In this episode, I ventured to the back alleys of KL to take on the legendary Nasi Lemak Bumbung! For those who are not familiar, Nasi Lemak is a traditional Malay dish with fragrant rice cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaf, usually served with an array of sides like fried chicken, spicy sambal, perfectly cooked sunny side up egg, cucumber slices and peanuts. I sampled not one, not two, but 21 whole plates of it - solo! Witness as I navigate through endless piles of delicious fried chicken and dive spoon-first into the incredible sambal that's firing up my taste buds like never before!
This food exploit isn't just about indulging in mouthwatering dishes; it's also a testament to how much I appreciate and relish in the rich tapestry of Southeast Asian culinary culture! If you enjoy epic food challenges and unique dining experiences just as much as I do, don't forget to subscribe to our channel and turn on post notifications so you won't miss out any tasty adventures we have lined up for you in this 3 episode KL series!

Whaoo .. 20 plates of nasi lemak, a bowl of rendang with roti canai - you really enjoy food. Sambal nasi lemak is cooked with onions and some add dry shrimps plus other condiments. Thus one can taste the different layers of flavour. Great share 🧡👍

Interestingly, in different states of Malaysia, Hokkien Mee refers to different kinds of foods. In the southern part of Malaysia, Hokkien Mee is referred to as the dark-colored noodles as mentioned by Zermatt. But in the northern part of Malaysia such as Penang, Hokkien Mee refers instead to soup-based prawn noodles.
@kevo5020
@kevo5020 11 ай бұрын
Correct. The dark hokkien mee is KL style which Penangites call dai lok mee which is basically the thicker yellow noodles that they use for the noodles. Penang hokkien mee is har mee soup as what KL people would call it. Penang also has hokkien char which is fried noodles which is brown in colour.

Hey Zermatt, just near by this nasi lemak bumbung got a charcoal fried Hokkien Mee cooked by a 70 years old uncle, quite a decent hokkien mee that you can try but beware of the waiting time! It's called Lao Ping Hokkien Mee @ sea park restaurant. You can check them out when you come again.

Prawn mee in Penang is labeled as "Hokkien Mee", and the rest of the states is the dark color mee and thick noodle similiar to udon. I tried the Singapore version and its quite light tasting, whereas the MY version has more flavor to it. It depends on your palate if you prefer a lighter or heavier flavor. The dark version emphasize alot on the Wok Hey rather than the ingredient.

As a Malaysian, Nasi Lemak and CKT for sure Malaysia win but tbh I think I'll give the edge to Singapore when it comes to Hokkien Mee bcs I'm not a huge fan of the sweet dark sauce of the Malaysian version, I prefer the savoury SG version

@kevo5020
@kevo5020 11 ай бұрын
Fully respect that taste is subjective but while the KL hokkien mee uses caramelised soy sauce, it should still be savoury. Reading that you think the SG one is savoury implies the KL version is sweet and that just shows you haven’t had a good one. A good one should be a balance of savoury, sweet, umami, wok hey and spicy with the chilli.

The “pasty” sambal you eat in Singapore are usually bought from supplier cos food owners themselves dunno how to make. There are “watery” or a combination of the former and “oily”, those are made in house which gives the “authentic” taste. 😀

Ayam Taliwang from Singapore, not sure if considered Nasi Lemak (but originates from Indonesia), tastes the best!

I prefer SG Hokkien Mee. I never liked the Malaysian version. As for CKT and Nasi Lemak, I like both the Singapore and Malaysia versions. Both versions are different and have their own merits. I always worry for Zermatt when I see him eat so much. 😛
