It was often known as "road racing" in those days, partly because a lot of races took place on circuits which included public roads. Le Mans, for example, is nearly all public road. This doesn't sound terribly important but back then the differences were quite pronounced. Public roads often had high crowns and groves worn into them by traffic, not to mention the fact that they were not always repaired with ground effect and rock hard suspension in mind.

Love this. This is pure automotive racing. I like how every so often a driver f's up and spins the car. You don't see that anymore with traction control systems. You also don't see mis-shifts since everything is sequential now. Sad to say, but racing these days is pretty boring. There's no more excitement. Whereas in this you see the drivers fighting themselves, the track, the car and each other. So many elements critical to a podium finish.

What a great blast from the past. I used to be a freelance photographer back in the 1980s, motorsports being my specialty. And it was this type of racing I enjoyed covering the most. That C11 is a torquey bastard, ain't it?

B0SSNINE The Porsche 962 was identical to the 956, except the cockpit was shifted slightly back to meet IMSA regulations in the US. The C11 was an even faster version of the earlier C9. Neither were tuned down from earlier versions.

+BOSSINE Actually, they're running about the same power as they did then. In race trim it put out about 720-730 hp and maybe 820 in practice (as qualifying was known then). But the trouble is that the only thing anyone seems to talk about with the C11 is how much power it made. It wasn't really that much more powerful than the others. The Nissan, for example made the same, if not more power. The C11 was great because of a combination of factors. According to the drivers, it had phenomenal grip. Martin Brundle, who was racing for Jaguar at the time, reckoned it had the most downforce of any Group C car. It also had a very even spread of torque, the curve being almost lineally flat between 3,000 and 6,000 rpm. Ultimately it deserves to be remembered for the championships it and the C9 won.

I don't know how you guys do it, you get the best footage and sound I've seen on youtube. Definitely my favorite channel on youtube at the moment, thanks for the videos!! Also, major respect to these drivers. They make pushing these cars look easy. I've driven the 962 and Sauber C11 in sims and concentrating on the line lap after lap for that long in that much of a car takes ridiculous amounts of focus. 1 mistake or a late brake and you're done. Cajones!

4:15 you can see how much turbo-power this cars had: The car oversteers a little bit turning into the start/finish-straight, accerlates and spins the reartyres just before upshifting when the full turbo hits in ! This cars were really the best ever to see and hear at Le Mans; Group C rules ... still !!!

Sadly my friend wasn't there this year with their two Porsche 956 New Man and JDavid. But you can see them at Solitude Revival this year on 22.-24. of July.

I can assure you that's the case. The yamaha sounds different to some degree because it's under more lax emissions regulations, so it comes equipped with longtube headers that are much longer per unit displacement than any v8, thus changing the tone. The oversquare design of the R1 also has a dramatic effect on tonal depth. Also, a V8 does have two of these 4-cylinders, out of phase by 360 degrees, so it has a "Phase" effect.
