You told the legend wrong. Remember this is people's religion, and also family historical legend. Please be respectful. There's nothing wrong with telling stories but please tell them CORRECTLY not haphazardly. Pele was a fire goddess in Tahiti, in Hawai'i she is the volcano goddess, the head chiefess of the Pele ancestral clan who resides in Kilauea. Furthermore this story is also an explanation of why all the major islands of the Hawai'i group have volcanic craters, starting with Ni'ihau. She uses her volcanic digging stick to dig craters in every major island until she reaches Maui. There she has a deadly battle with her sister Namaka'okaha'i and dies. Her soul is brought or floats to Hawai'i island where she finds old man 'Aila'au the first volcano/fire god. With his permission she digs a huge pit and builds a giant Hālau(long house) and because the big island is so elevated and huge Namaka'okaha'i could not flood anymore, and to this day Pelehonuamea, her brothers, thunder, lightning, explosions, fireballs, her many Hi'iaka sisters, including Hi'iaka'ikapoli'opele her most favorite sister, and the rest of the clan. Furthermore there are many reasons why Pele left Tahiti and was quarreling with her older sister. One thing also agreed upon is that she carried her youngest sister between her breasts within an egg. There are too many details that are left out. This could have been a much better presentation but you guys did a SLOPPY and disrespectful job. We already deal with enough with Haole coming to the islands bastardizing our culture and history, why would you guys who are our brothers and sisters participate in the same thing? How would you feel if we told a story about Malietoa or the Tui Manu'a, Tu'i Tonga, or other legendary or historical figures and left out details deemed important to the people the story belonged to? You would feel disrespected right? Then why is it alright to do it in this case? Or what if Hawaiians presented a Māori legend of importance and left out important details? Please do better. She's not just a fairy tale, this is also family lore, and religious legend, that people still observe. All religions should be respected. You don't have to believe, but at least be respectful.
