It's incredible, Walter moves this Porsche as if it were a slow delivery van delivering parts. You'd think he was driving to the bakery to get his rolls. Every steering angle is perfect, no corrections, no wild turning of the steering wheel. With a stoic calmness he moves the Porsche towards the limit, I understand why Micha could close his eyes and just feel the perfect flow of the ideal line. At 77, Walter remains at a world-class level. Simply unbelievable. Thanks for sharing🙏.

Yea the flow was insanely how smooth and precisely he changed gears let it roll in -high get low out to High and shift im optimum rpm. Yes, Walter Röhrls signature move is when he shows how he thinks about driving a car perfectly: He always shows how he handles the steering wheel with to fingers. It is always about the perfect balance ... and that makes it look like "he was driving to the bakery" ... There is another video (kzbin.info/www/bejne/qqWTYY2plM9pjNk) where 35 years younger Christoph Breuer drives the track 30 seconds faster than grandpa Walter. He is (audibly) a bit harsh to the tyres and the physics of the car at some points. Not the "two fingers at the steering wheel" approach.

Before driving for Lancia, Walter was warned that the cars were designed light and the roll cages might not be too strong. Walter decided to sign with Lancia and told friends and relatives that he would not crash. He drives at another level but never has any issues with crashes. As the Jeremy Clarkson video about Walter and Lancia winning the world championship pointed out, the fragile Lancias held up better than the Audi more than a few races including brutal Acropolis rally. I would bet the Lancias also held up because Walter did not overdrive or trash them. No mistakes. What an amazing man.

I didn't know anything about his history at that time. After driving around all the journalists in the car at dazzling speeds without the roof, he asked me and my colleague if we wanted to have a go.... One lap with TC one without. I disagree. "It's enough" is a statement of proficiency, he has nothing to prove. I can imagine that a road car like that compared to race cars he was driving in the past is night and day different. More power, smoothness and efficiency than any track car back in the day and it's available at your local Porsche dealer, not a bespoke race car. Perhaps a little envy of what's available now but I don't think it's real sadness.

@Bernard: Just saw this post and your comment. Allow me to share my interpretation. Walter has not got enough yet. 'Enough' after this lap he wants to state that anybody in doubt knows he could have done it faster if he had chosen to ... which he has not. Walter still has and always will have the competitive attitude. Thats just his soul. The sadness in his voice is just him being the understatement personified like he has always been. This guy is a legend. While he delivered legendary races and times he had always been the cool customer who frowned upon the champagne shower and the cheering. This guy is just one cool dude; perhaps whatever tension other drivers released with cheering and partying, Walter kept it inside and used it for the next race and the next lap. True original this man. Love him. So - dont worry Bernard. He aint done yet. You still see him on Berg Rallies in Austria and other stuff. This guy will go on as long as he lives. He has more to prove now than before - to himself - that he still can do what he likes best: Delivering damn good times and getting the most out of the cars he is driving.

Walter is and remains the icon of motorsport in Germany, if not the world. He is simply a down-to-earth guy. How I would love to take a lap around the ring with him. Misha I completely understand you saying it was a dream. This video reminded me a lot of the laps I was allowed to do in the taxi with Sabine. Thank you for always managing to bring back joyful experiences of the ring that are often forgotten. In memory of Sabine Schmitz “Queen of the Nordschleife”

You can calmly skip the "if" about icon in the world. I'm not German. I feel it a privilege just to have been able to follow Walter Röhrl on television during his prime (whenever that is - seems to be still ongoing), I've met more known race drivers (or at least known within the racing community) during my visits at Die Schleife through decades of Touristenfahrten, but meeting Dr. Röhrl in person would most probably leave me completely speechless and get completely stuck in the questions that I had otherwise collected for him over 40 years. But it is really lucky that we have YT today, who since the beginning has meant that I have gotten to know him better as a person. His humble approach to everything and self-effacing personality and always matter-of-fact approach to things. A man in complete mental balance. A man in complete control. Who takes things step by step. And a person who you both feel could be your closest friend and at the same time on a completely different planet, to which you never get a ticket yourself. And know it with a completely settled feeling.

Always was a smooth driver with attention to detail. When with Opel (81 and 82 world title) he was always clean, avoiding any lost time sideways. But one of his best feat is how he won San Remo 1985 with a beast like the Quattro S1. He never liked Finland because the jumps, but what people said that Loeb was pioneer, Rhorl already has done it near 30 years before. Rhorl was the pioneer of the "apex drive", clean like no other especially with the Ascona 400 and Lancia 037. With the Gr. B he showed something else and why he won Monte with so many different cars / manufacturers!! That's what makes a GOAT on WRC. Be able to win in different cars from different eras.

What I cherish about Misha's driving is how smooth he's driving fast. This is what I see with Walter, but a completely different expression of it. That flow he generates, going with the car instead of fighting it. In German, "auf Zug bleiben". He seemed to be struggling somewhat, which is understandable, as he alluded to, lack of routine with not having been to the Ring for years, plus inevitable effects of age - but still, what is seen here is a driving lesson, for everyone. As for the experience / honor, 0:53 - nothing to add.
