I wouldn't say he was the best, but he does have the greatest legal long jump in history. I believe Ivan Pedroso and Carl Lewis were the greatest long jumpers in history, Ivan being the better of the two in my opinion. Why? Because of dominance rather a beamonesque performance. But his world record is still amazing to see.

That’s a fair point, but I think Carl is definitely better all time than Iván. Carl won 4 Olympic golds and Iván won 1. Iván may have more WC golds, but Lewis won 2 (would’ve been 3 if not for Powell) when the world championships were 4 years apart, not 2. Plus Lewis has a better PB and had the infamous 65 meet win streak. Also with Powell, he wasn’t necessarily a one hit wonder. He won two Olympic silvers and gold at the 1993 WCs. Also he had numerous jumps of 8.90+ that were wind aided after the world record. Beamon didn’t have any significant LJ achievements outside of the 68 games, and he never got close to his WR before or after

@@Kenny-mu2xb Hmm... Fair statements. In that regard, I would say Carl Lewis was the best competitor no doubt. I tend to label the "best long jumper" on the metrics of technique, performance, and some form of bias. I look at the numerous fouls Pedroso had over 9m and his 8.96 "legal but not legal" jump and use those plus his style to make my arguments.... But... It's hard to argue against Lewis' numbers, and that's where the bias comes in.

That’s true. Pedroso definitely didn’t have speed that was close to Lewis level, yet he was clearly at the top of the long jump for an extended period of time. Lewis relied on his sprint speed in the long jump to be successful. With that in mind, Pedroso probably did a superior job on form and jumping ability. I don’t think you can go wrong with either, after all, they both have 9+ meter fouls to their credit. They both are very near the pinnacle of human ability in the long jump.
