Phar Lap, a true champion good to see him on the list.

This is a very good list! If you are talking horses that could perform up to 12F, three main omissions are Ribot from Italy., Sea Bird II from France and Mill Reef (a cousin of Secretariat) from UK. Ribot and Sea Bird II are traditionally regarded as the greatest horses f their decade (50s and 60s) and as top five all time horses. I would drop out Deep Impact (Japanese racing is traditionally weaker and his conformity was not special), Sea Biscuit (run a long career but not a consistently great one) and Black Caviar (sprinter only). Furthermore, Kelso and Dancing Brave are top 10 all time 12F horses, Frankel and Zenyatta were truly great horses but never attempted that distance. Also American Pharoah hovers around that top 10 12F horse mark as well, with his triple crown and 2nd fastest Belmont of all time.

And Kelso won the Jockey Club Gold Cup five years in a row at the unheard of distance of 2 miles. Before the Breeders' Cup, Belmont hosted many championship events in September and October and the JCGC was one of them.

@@ronaldbarnes3327 Kelso was a true champion. It would have been interesting to see him versus Secretariat over 2 miles.
@ronaldbarnes33272 ай бұрын
@@connorduke4619 Yes! Secretariat won all 3 of his starts at 12f. (2 on turf). But, upon autopsy, one vet revealed that he had the largest heart the vet had ever seen. So, perhaps the longer the distance the better.
@connorduke46192 ай бұрын
@@ronaldbarnes3327 At some point body mass is likely to kick in. Look at human middle and long distance runners, they are built much lighter than sprinters. The greatest 2 miler in history was Kelso, a much more lightly built horse. Kelso would have been an epic challenge for Secretariat to come up against over 2 miles.

Frances Dunne was asked who was the better horse - Man O' War or Secretariat? His reply - "Neither! I saw Phar Lap." Dunne was a long-time steward and saw many of the champions race in America. He was there at Agua Caliente in 1932 to see the great gelding win. The race is on KZbin.

Secretariat only raced through his 3-year-old season. Phar Lap was at his best AFTER the age of 3, AND he never raced in the United States, even though he died here.

tony morris in his book A CENTURY OF CHAMP;IONS gives a balanced assessment of Secreariat, Man o War and Phar Lap
@Steven-r2w9b13 күн бұрын
@@jjsmith4829 Calling ANY analysis by an author or so-called "expert" as "balanced" is STILL going to be a SUBJECTIVE analysis. EVERYBODY has their own opinions. In my educated opinion, Secretariat is the greatest thoroughbred racehorse in HISTORY, especially when you consider the fact that he accomplished MORE than any other racehorse in a VERY short amount of time, only racing through the age of three. #2 on my list is Spectacular Bid. #3 is Citation. #4 is Phar Lap, and an argument can be made that Phar Lap should be #2. And on and on and on. I would place Man o' War somewhere between #8 and #10 for a VARIETY of reasons, mostly related to the fact that he raced over 100 years ago.

Picking a top ten all time list is obviously very subjective. Good to see Frankel in the Top 10. I'd personally place him in the top 5.

A nice list but strong North American bias. I would put most of these in the top 100 American horses. Who's missing? Kelso, Dr. Fager, Ruffian, Native Dancer, on and on. And then there's the Europeans. I'm glad you thought of Phar Lapp. Great movie. Well. we love our lists.

There are a lot of racehorses and it is quite hard to put together a list of top ten horses based on winnings. if the channel added all the horses y'all wanted them to add, the title would be "top 30 greatest thoroughbreds of all time".
@david10446 ай бұрын
How can you have a Top 10 without Dr Fager, Swaps, Kelso or Forego? And your #10 should be #1. There wasn't a single distance where the Bid wasn't faster than Secretariat. He still holds the world record for the most coveted champions distance in 1:57.70. and he did that under restraints. A full 8 lengths faster than Secretariats best. He never lost with a 130lbs or more. Citation could never win with that kind. of weight. Excluding Bids Belmont, where he was injured and never changed leads the entire race, he was never passed in the stretch..imagine that. His 1980 undefeated campaign is considered the greatest in history by any horse. And Zenyatta.... wow! Not even top 50. Hats off on the Phar Lap choice though. Noor beat Citation 4 straight times. Even spotting him weight...I never can figure how Citation makes these lists..and Noor doesn't.
@Greinton9403 ай бұрын
As you should know Citation in all likelihood wasn't nearly the same racehorse in 1950 that he was in 1948 after that osselet injury.
@david10443 ай бұрын
@@Greinton940 Yes, the injury may have had some effect. But he had no trouble beating other horses while achieving fast times. But not Noor. Even when Noor was spotting him 8 lbs. You can speculate all you want. But in the annels of racing history. Citation lost to Noor 4 times. Noor held the world record for the champions distance for 2 decades. Citation never won with the threshold weight of a 130 lbs or more. Many champions have failed at that roadblock. No shame. But Noor was simply better.

Lists consistently fail to identify the greatest horse because there is no objective way to measure "greatest". Comparing horses in this way comes down to making apples vs. orange comparisons. To put this in perspective let's consider a horse who isn't even on this list - Round Table. Round Table won 43 races in just 4 years of racing, set 14 track, US, and world records, and carried 130-136 pounds to victory 17 times. 17 is more races than Secretariat won in his career, all of which he won carrying under 130 pounds. Round Table also raced 1 1/4 mile in under two minutes five times and ran it 1:58 and change carrying 132 pounds. Even though he scored most of his victories on dirt, many say he is the greatest grass horse of all time. There is no reason to believe that any of the other horses on this list had the ability to win 43 races in 4 years or 34 races in 3 years as Round Table did. They never did. Does that mean Round Table was the "greatest" horse? Of course not. These are apples vs. oranges comparsions.

I don't know who put this list together, but it's useless. Anyone who thinks Zenyatta belongs in the top 10 of all time or that Seabiscuit was superior to Spectacular Bid should be in another business. In fact, the only horses that should remain on this list are Secretariat, the Bid, Citation and Frankel. If you leave out Man o' War, Sea-Bird, Brigadier Gerard and a few others, you simply don't know a thing about the sport. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but at least it should be informed.
