Phil Liggett. The voice of the Tour and one of the best story tellers of all time. That said, my heart still sinks a bit every year because it's just not the same without Paul. I still hear his voice and the back and forth with him and Phil. He was such a gentleman. All these years later it still feels like a recent loss. I know it won't last forever but I'm thankful that Phil is still gracing us with his commentary.

I miss him, too. He was part of our family for 3 weeks every summer. I cried when I heard the news. And again when Lance sat down with Bob for a long chat about Paul. He is missed.

Absolutely same. I've watched daily for 30 years and I still miss Paul. I think of him regularly because I got the memorial Road ID bracelet (worth it). The side says "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." 💕🚴♀️

Sherwen was literally on Team Motorola’s payroll as a Public Relations professional. I don’t know if that arrangement continued with US Postal. I enjoyed his voice, and his insights into cycling generally, but he was compromised.

The voice of the Tour de France. Loved watching Channel 4 coverage with Phil & Paul, back in the eighties. Like two friends I’d invite into the living room at the start of July every year. Great coverage, interesting tips and insights into the working of the peloton. I watch it every year and miss my two friends. Chapeau.

I can still recall many comments from Phil but three of my faves are "It's ShYeats, its Sean Yates" and "Who's that rider coming up behind, it's Roche, it's Stephen Roche" and finally, I can almost remember verbatim his calling of the end of the 89 Tour with Fignon bouncing off the cones.

What a legend! Now living in Denmark and streaming the tour on GCN+. We desperately miss you Phil!!! There is nothing to compare with your and Paul's super interesting commentary on the tour and everything that surrounds it. You say everyone receives the info, but that is definitely not apparent from other commentary where they hardly ever give detail on the beautiful buildings etc like you do. Your insight to the riders and teams is also unparalleled.

I began watching the TdF as a teen just spacing out in front of the TV on weekends, curious about the French countryside. It was Phil and Paul who got me interested in the cycling, with me trying to work out what was going on with their commentary. I'm still a casual viewer, but other commentators just don't do it for me. Phil's voice is like a comfort blanket and he makes the hours so much more interesting and enjoyable.

Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwin were, in my opinion, the greatest sports commentator duo of all time. I miss Paul, and I can't imagine the Tour without Phil. It's so interesting to hear him talk about his incredible data compilation efforts (every day since 1980!) and also how they developed their commentary about the castles and other cultural sites along the route - such a tremendous complement to the race itself. Interesting also that all the national tours now do the same thing. It's part of what makes cycling such a unique sport. Just as when you go out for a ride, you can see so much more of a place, so it is with the race commentary.

Fond memories growing up in Southern California as a junior racer and heading out on training rides where my friend and teammate who recorded all the Tours on VHS knew all the best Phil quotes which he'd use in jest as we rode and hung out. Those days all we knew to do was to ride far with obviously no power meters and training blocks just getting on our bicycles and pedalling. The lime green Avocet computer with the blue buttons was about as cool of a thing we had. And the first gen white and black Look pedals.
