Legere American Cut vs D'Addario Select Jazz | Alto Reed Blind Test

Here is a blind test of two alto saxophone reeds. Can you guess which is which? You can see the results at the end of the video. Let me know in the comments if you prefer cane or synthetic. Also please subscribe if you like this video.

I honestly prefer the Legere signature reeds over the new American cut. They feel a little more natural throughout the range of the horn. I do find Legere reeds (although excellent) to be quite fussy with mouthpieces. As an example, I find them far happier coupled with a rubber Link or Meyer than my metal mouthpieces. On my rubber pieces they feel like cane and I forget about them but on metal pieces they feel a little weird/different and I'm always aware that I'm playing a synthetic reed. I've been told they do sound fine though.

I couldn’t tell the difference. I was thinking which ever sounded stuffy but each take was different and altissimo 1 sounded more focused. Overall I would say it comes down to individual feedback and feel.

D'addario Select Jazz is a bit brighter for me but altissimo is great on the Legere. It's stronger and more stable up there than any cane reed I've ever played.

Interesting! though I got it quite wrong! On tenor I get the opposite effect - cane = more complex and richer sound whilst the Legere sound is 'shinier'. Different mouthpieces made no difference. Maybe it's simply that different horns work best with different reeds? (I play Borgani Joe Lovano model).

It would propably sound brighter if I compared it to some other cane reeds. I found D'addario Select Jazz Filed reeds to be one of the brightest reeds on the market. Legere is a bit darker and warmer but still on the bright side.

Legere is more responsive and brighter .2.50 makes it brighter I believe.

Could you tell me what the equivalence is of measure between them please, I ve been looking for the comparison chart but d'addario select jazz doesn't appear

For me 2.25 feels similar to D'addario Jazz Select 3S. 2.50 was a bit harder.
