The lodges always felt like something that should have been a problem for the Ultramarines to me. Guilliman had so many sons, and pushed for them all to be more than mere killers, to have a role in wider society once the Crusade was over, that surely a way to allow fraternal bonds, away from military command structures and disciplined stoicism, surely would have appealed to the 13th Primarch, even perhaps to go further and allow a degree of formal recognition and inclusion of mon Astartes within their social ranks. Really, that would be a great excuse for some Traitor Ultramarines. Isolated by the Ruinstorm, free to voice the notion that perhaps Horus was right, that Ultramar should be independent of Terra, and that surely Guilliman would either have seen that logic, or would do once the Warmaster was victorious...

I'm never sure if I'm reading into it correctly; but it's always seemed to me that what the Lodges contributed most towards the Heresy was simply allowing the Astartes to feel human. That would have to be one of the greater tragedies of the setting if so. Just the inherent flaws of humanity and the desire to just be a person from time to time is what opened the legions to corruption. They can't even have just that.

Baldermort. You had a discussion about ferrus manus. And his return. I have an interesting take on it: he was taken by slaanesh and both would and wouldn't become the sapphire king: his soul trudged through the palace of slaanesh. So incorruptible and unassailable that he made it all the way the core of slaaneshes palace. Saw the prince and turned to a statue of living metal (for ironies sake) but also for slaanesh to mock ferrus name and to inflict pain in the soul who denied her a champion. From this statue still capable (or so slaanesh thought) of feeling pain by raking the statue with flensing claws. From one of these flensings was made a scrap that was given to be made into a daemon of appropriate strength to replace the loss manus represented: The sapphire king. Sent to punish and torture the sons of the one who denied her her second prize. Isn't that delicious and satisfying?

I liked that the White Scars that turned because of the lodges harbored such a deep respect for the Khan that even after they were defeated by the loyalists they still bent the knee and accepted his gracious offer to regain their honor in duty. It kinda reminds me of a more honorable version of the Night Lords "red hands" thing, that they were condemned for their treachery but still had work to do first. The Scars may have recovered from lodge issues better than any legion because of it.

The moment that the Warrior Lodges were formed should have brought up concerns to many of the Loyalists, as the formation of secret societies within the Legion should have been investigated for suspicious activities, and the obvious division that was brewing in the Legions. While obviously filled with future traitors it should be noticed that these lodges were not within all legions, but a majority were found with traitors legions compared to loyalists counterparts, as this should have been a warning that they would have been against the Emperor from the very beginning.

Good choice for a story, really liked this one. The Lodges were a well used idea in earlier novel, as a I Legion fan I feel like that was the 'good' use of them. Luther laughing in Abbadon's face is a moment I wish got more attention; a few Legions did get the idea of secretive brotherhood without it being sedition. I notice the lodges were corrupt because they were placed in Legions that twisted how Astartes related to each other. EC being so arrogant later on, IW the most. I stand by with French's new books like Sigismund that they've virtually the same as the Fists: the *only* difference is no one gives a rat's ass for a brother in the IVth, if they had a chain of empathy or respect they would have been adored.

Creating Warrior lodges was a really plan that would take decades to really start making progress. However as you rightly pointed out as terran marines were replaced and as crusading fleet's went farther away loyality to Emperor started to fade. It was really brilliant plan how to corrupt legions from the inside with such normally harmless idea.

I love the idea of the Warrior Lodges because they show one of the ways the Imperium under the Emperor was always doomed from the start, and one of the flaws of the Space Marines in particular. No matter how much the Imperium tries to grind out every speck of humanity from the marines and make them obedient tools of the Emperor's will, they still have that emotional need for something more than duty, and the personality they inherit from their homeworlds and their primarchs, that they have no outlet for other than comradeship with each other.

I feel like kicking myself again for missing out on this video. The return of Tallax, and two new potential characters who may join the Crusade at Abundance Tertius. Hexxamael sounds like he will be in a future video surely, if the Chaos Knights video was any indication. I do want to see a video featuring Ulik, maybe even see him as a true Chaos Marine of Nurgle. Overall, looking forward to future videos my good servo-skull.

This was fantastic as ever Baldermort, the explanation about how loyalty was focused away from the higher ranks was excellent. I know the Dark Angels had lots of different groups and wings. Do you think this helped hold off the rot of lodges in the first legion?
