Happiness is a very complicated mental state - in order to truly be happy, you have to let go of so many things and relax your inner mind which most people do NOT do. Some people do not allow themselves to be happy because of a long-running bout with guilt or a traumatic event - they either force themselves to relive the event so they can renew their lack of being allowed to be happy or they cannot forgive and move on in the case of the traumatic experience. Some people do not thing they deserve to ever have something like happiness because they have not earned it or have passed on it making them future non-recipients. I believe they DO want to be happy but cannot see themselves making the mark, climbing the wall, overcoming the obstacle, reaching the goal or some other tried and true measure of failure. And I agree with Lanie who says people are more comfortable in their unhappiness - they are! The mind is subtle but relentless in dealing with itself through your dreams, your day dreams and your unwarranted thought processes which you lapse into whenever you are not having directed and somewhat controlled thought. It is easy to try to make your self "Happy" but it is not a forced exercise - it occurs when you let go and stop comparing all of the things that normally cloud your mind - quit asking yourself if you are a good person; stop "daring" yourself to do better; let yourself fail and learn from it rather than wallow in its terror and shame every time you feel threatened by another failure. They simply do not have a clue as to getting onto the right path to reach happiness. -Donna F Hammett
