In a previous life, the Boston Dynamics founders developed a new breed of dynamic robots. Here are clips from those early one-legged, two-legged and four-legged robots developed at Carnegie Mellon (1980-1986) and MIT (1987-1995).

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought this... it's kind of creepy knowing that they've been working on this stuff for this long and we've only started seeing the more polished stuff in more recent years.

What I really like about these machines is that they work in an almost completely different way to other robots. These robots can actually react to environments around them and it can keep its balance, it doesn't have some crappy pre-written program just running in the background. BigDog and PETMAN show this well when the guys comes up and tries to push the robot over, it just instantly reacts to this force and balances itself. Pure f*cking genius!
@robinfiler87078 жыл бұрын
why aren't their more robots like this?? seriously these robots are amazing they can run really fast and can jump really high and can do back flips!
@andyhaochizhang7 жыл бұрын
Robin Filer because most of them are only "dynamically stable", which means they can only be upright when they keep jumping. Also without joints they are not good at handling tough terrain which is a major goal for the study of robotics legged locomotion.

It started with the Genereal Electrics walking jeep. That was back in the sixties. The ideas just surpassed the tech so the shelved it and waited for everything to catch up but it was amazing how far they got. The kind of progress that made you wonder just how far they could have pushed it if fueled by another world war.

0:58 like that's a impressive even now. But I can't imagine how relieved, excited, and overall the amount of accomplishment you feel when you see your creation do a literal backflip. In the 80s BTW 🤯 Maybe it's just because I was born in the early 2000s, but hearing about life before 2000 just sounded like they didn't have much technology at all. But I'm sure that's wrong and they were more advanced than I thought.

Extremely fun! You enjoy making them don't you? The initial high-speed capability for some of these models are far more impressive than BigDog or PETMAN but I can see how they lack in the utility department. Regardless it must have been very inspiring to see these early models take off and shine in the areas you hoped they would.

@Puleczech No, cockroaches can learn, track food, avoid light, and engage in complex cleaning and mating behaviors. They can also adapt easily to rough terrain, unlike these robots, and don't need to be plugged in :) . Not dissing the robot creators in any way, I'm just saying that they still have a ways to go before they create anything as sophisticated as a cockroach.
