DaVinci would fall off his chair knowing some 500 years later his creations would be alive and well in LEGO form. But what is this upcoming January LEGO set really all about?

I really hope Lego fully embraces D&D. Lego has tried to gamify sets for years and have never really succeeded in getting people to roll dice to play Lego. Until Red Dragon Inn. There's so much potential for D&D as a theme.

This is a situation where the color mismatch and Technic jankiness actually contribute to the aesthetic in my opinion - steampunk often has a bit of gangly awkwardness in it. Also, regarding display - the color, shape, and size give it an "executive toy" aesthetic that I think could be neat in an office or something

I think, at least in the example he gave, the brown piece is supposed to be a wood support piece, and the grey one, because it's part of the flying mechanism itself, is supposed to be metal

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the flying machine isn't steampunk. Steampunk as far as I know is a SF aesthetic where most of the machines use steam to work like boilers. The flying machine is mostly out of wood, fabric and ropes. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think Da Vinci tried to figure out how to make this thing fly by only moving manually without motors. But still, the color mismatch still fits because wood isn't all that consistent in color.

@@knightatyourservice7512yeah it’s technically not steampunk proper. It’s not more advanced tech powered by steam. However the term has morphed to often encompass anything of a higher technology level achieved with more primitive technical methods. And the aesthetic is often done with lots of exposed physical mechanisms. So I see how this fits.

XD Perfect to put together and put in its display case! Cool and small! :) It doesn't take up any space! XD Same with the new Tumblr set it's perfect too!!! Finally being able to have the Joker minifigure without having to buy a Titan-sized Tumblr is awesome! XD Plus the new Ferrari F1 Speed ​​​​Champions is on the same level as these two... I need all three of these sets! :)

I think its amazing that such an original set came out. Leonardo da Vinci always fascinated me cause he was great painter mathematician and engineer and his machine concepts were ahead of their time. To see a Lego set of a flying machine with his minifigure for 50 dollars US is a great thing. I hope we would see a Vitruvian Man as a print sometime in the future

Oh my I will buy this immediately when released. Da Vinci is for me one of the men that was the foundation of The Renaissance era and a grandmaster of art. Leo from Vinci made the most famous painting in the World and with this set I hope there will be more sets of him coming out in Lego.

For flapping motion sets, I think I will stick with the Harry Potter Hedwig Owl and Hungarian Horntail dragon. Their movement looks great and the builds themselves are intricate and fun, resulting in very good looking models. Just a matter of taste of course.

I think folks who enjoy the steampunk aesthetic will snatch it up. I imagine some folks who are into displaying planes and shuttles would happily display this flying historical artifact next to their other sets, almost like a flight museum piece. I flew one of these in Assassin's Creed back in the day... so maybe some folks who are into historical adventures might buy it. It's personally not something I'm into but clearly there's a market for these. It's a lot more affordable and displayable than the massive Titanic set. It comes down to personal tastes.

Disagree with you on the display value my man. Though not necessarily the prettiest thing in the room, is also not ugly per se and definitely somethat will engage a conversation when seen. “What the hell is that man?” “Oh…it’s da vinci’s plane, look, it flaps it’s wings.” “Wow. Cool.” That’s how i see it going most of the time. So it would be very successful as a display piece as it encourages people to engage it.

Honestly I doubt if it will sell well as it's too niche as you say. I mean the technical stuff is great but other then that it looks odd and people may go like "what is that?!" when you display it. With other sets you most likely go like that's so awesome everytime you look at it after building but this remains an odd thing to display.

Do you get the impression that Lego's photography of the sets has been kinda below par lately? Cos I feel they really undersell the sets a lot, as this set is a lot larger than it seemed at first and it's a very interesting and different looking model. I'm reminded of the Hedwig build from 2020 which went for a similar display prescence but the mechanism is different and just as cool here. Less cool though are the EU, AU and UK prices which are absurd; US price is okay but come on, this should be 50 Euros and £45 at the very most.

I loved it. Its not the perfect design, since the blue print is a lot different. But it will look beautiful close to galileo gwp. It looks like a boat, instead of his flying machine. To be honest i really dont care much about it. Leonardo always caught my eyes since i was a kid and i used to play a cd rom that had a game with the flying machine (icarus), and the shadow you say could actually be icarus in his flying machine. I will use my building points to get a discount on it. And since its a very niche set i doubt it will sell well or last long enough. So it could be the best for those who dont care much but want to wait for it to drop the price, just like the fish bird.. (which i got too because i just love birds), i paid full price and now is one of the cheapest sets out there at least here in my country. I would love a set of charles darwin too.
