I was a really young kid in the late 80’s and early 90’s so that era of Lego is what I was first exposed to. For me it’s Castle and Pirates from about 1988 - 1997 that are my favorite themes. To me the box art and instructions from that era are simply amazing. I tend to agree that this current era of Lego doesn’t bring that same sort of joy as when I was a kid, but I expect that. The only exception is now when Lego comes out with throwbacks like the Lion Knight’s Castle and El Dorado Fortress etc that I get those same bygone feelings again.

I’m nostalgic about when there wasn’t widely-used internet. It was just more simple then. Of course, I wouldn’t be able to watch these videos, lol

I think the '88-'94 era is peak Lego. Blacktron, Ice Planet, Forestmen, Wolfpack, Pirates, Islanders, Metroliner, Harbor & Airport. The sets are a perfect balance of looks, play features, complexity and charm. That being said I am enjoying this current era of remastered classic sets like Barracuda Bay, Galaxy Explorer, etc. In fact the pirate skeleton on your shirt reminds me of the hidden one on the new El Dorado Fortress remake.

That 88-94 era is when my collecting really took off. A perfect storm of more money, great sets, and a lot of clearance

I agree about the 80s. A lot of best in the 80s

My favorite era would have been from '79 - '87. I do agree that LEGO has lost that specialness and I think that it's because they spit out so many different sets/themes in a year that it isn't as special. I also miss those Legoland boxes with the plastic insert trays and flip open covers. I don't see why they couldn't do that on smaller sets today and use a cardboard insert.

Specifically my favourite years for LEGO were 1987 to 1994 but if I were generous I’d say 1983-1996. We can both agree on the year 1974

Yeah, I just got the email yesterday that my BLDP mushroom house is being shipped! Not sure if I want to keep it in the box. Advice?
@BrickTsarАй бұрын
My default answer is always open and build. That coming from some with way too many unopened sets
@geologyjoerocksАй бұрын
@@BrickTsar I was thinking the same thing, lol. I always have these fantasies of keeping the set in box for a few years, then selling it or trading it for something more expensive, but that's dumb. I should just open it and enjoy it, ha ha.

I don't know how much is nostalgia, and how much is reality. The 80s has 3 distinct eras, 1978-1983 the beginning of the minifig era; 1984 - 1988 from the relaunch of castle and the expansion of Town and Space and Fabuland and Technic; 1989 - early 1990s after the introduction of Pirates and the colour codes on the boxes and catalogues. The early minifig era was a bit blocky, but did come with some nice nostalgia sets. I think the high point of the 80s was from the castle relaunch, and the sets markedly looked better and was more interesting to build and play with. The Pirates launch built up on that and introduced of themes and factions, but that era also marked the end of Classic Space and Fabuland. Would you agree with my breakdown of the 80s, jaabo? #bat

I’m nostalgic for the 70s & 80s era, mainly because that was my childhood and we had LEGO Space. Looking back with adult eyes there was an innocence and charm to many sets that doesn’t seem so present in the modern era. In the present I appreciate the detail and build experience. They produce some highly detailed and complex models that are quite a marvel considering they utilize bricks and pieces. But there is just so much of it, it is overwhelming and exceedingly expensive. And yet they can’t do simple things like printed pieces especially in the adult oriented sets, something that was commonplace in the 70s & 80s and stands the rest of time. Perhaps do less and do it even better, take what is good and make it great. Looking forward to the videos next year!

How valuable would you say the boxes are for BDP sets? I still have the box from the "Castle in the Forest" set, but would consider selling it if it had any value...

Kmart was special. Walmart is meh! I think the later seventies is the greatest era, with LEGO SPACE not trying to be Star Wars, it is its own thing. I hate it whenever people try to compare anything post 1977 sci-fi to Star Wars because there was always awesome sci-fi and not so great sci-fi pre 1977. I think one of the greatest Sci-Fi movies is Forbidden Planet. There's a similar problem with LEGO knock-offs, but if I look at Mega Bloks over the decades they weren't trying to be LEGO, they had more military builds and today with the Halo set still on shelves, that's something that I still appreciate.
