Reminds me of European comic book hero Tintin who's always celebrated within the comic as this great reporter, but he never bothers to do any interviews, journalistic investigating or taking any pictures on his adventures and even happely let's himself be interviewed by rival reporters. Seems Johnny is way better on that regard.

The only time I saw Johnny Thunder as a kid was in this LEGO Studios game I used to play all the time on LEGO's website. It was this game where you would walk around a LEGO studio lot of some kind, and I remember seeing Johnny asking for his hat, I think. It's been so long since I played that game, and I don't remember if it was just his hat or anything else. I'm disappointed that I wasn't old enough to remember or experience LEGO Adventurers, but it is always nice to see what I missed.

This was a significant line for me even though I only had a few sets. But I loved the browser games and got to play with more of the sets thanks to some classmates who had more money to spend on Lego. It was disappointing when I later found out that Lego got a pitch for a cartoon series about Johnny Thunder which they turned down. That would have been the perfect way to popularize the theme further, but Lego didn't capitalize on it. Maybe they had no interest in the line anymore, since that was around the time Orient Expedition came out.

It's interesting to me that these days, just about every story-based Lego theme gets a TV show to go along with it. When I was a kid it was up in the air if a theme's story would be told through comics, novels, flash games, animations, or a mix of all of them (*cough* Bionicle *cough*). I think today's kids are lucky that the stories to their favorite Lego themes are so accessible compared to how things used to be.
@Vrahno4 жыл бұрын
@@kumatorahaltmanndreemurr True, Bionicle itself would in all likelihood be much better remembered by regular people as a story theme if its media had been just as accessible. Separating the story across such a convoluted multimedia release schedule (most of which was confined to the English speaking world at that) must absolutely have been detrimental to the franchise in the long run, and that's why nobody but the hardcore fans still care about its story anymore.
@kumatorahaltmanndreemurr4 жыл бұрын
@@Vrahno I think the G2 story team had the right idea in having the story presented through a show. That said, I can't imagine who at Lego thought it was smart to only green light five episodes. I sadly didn't get any of the Orient sets, and I only got 1 Amazon and 1 Dino Island set, but I wanted them all more than anything because Johnny was so freaking cool! I also wanted the big plastic base from the final Amazon set to be used as a village for my early BIONICLE sets since I saw an old pic of someone doing the same. Fun to come back here just as the City Jungle sets released, featuring Johnny Thunder. It's funny, I was hoping for that in 2017's City Jungle, which had a good amount of exploration. Whereas the modern Jungle Exploration....is less so. The focus is so much more on the vehicles than the terrain or treasures, or in this case, wildlife studying. It's kind of like the Animal Rescue we saw a few years ago but with less peril. And hey, shoutout to Friends taking on Jungle before 2017 CITY did. They had animal rescuing sure, but they also offered a glimpse of exploration. Jungle Falls is one of my favorite Friends sets and I'm glad I own at least this one from the Jungle line. A clever building technique for the gear function makes the model spring ro life while offering a reward of treasure and a small cave to explore.

One weirdly specific memory I have about the adventure theme's last year was this...sort of board game element that came into play with it? I dont remember if it was just part of each major land mark set or not, but I remembee that the Ice location with the toppling bridge had extra parts to it that let you make a game out of it, and you could expand it further with the other sets. I think each mini figure was supposed to have their own ability or stats, or that you had to pick up the included weapons on "the board" while you were trying to collect stuff. It's been so long that I do not remember the details well at all, and I never got to explore the idea beyond the one set

I would love it if Universal (Who got the rights to make Lego movies in 2020 after TLM2 bombed.). made a movie about Johnny Thunder and his adventures in Egypt in 1932, trying to stop Sam Sinister and the explorers club from releasing an ancient curse. With potential sequels following his adventures in the Amazon in 1935, Dino Island in 1938 and Orient Expedition in 1948. I would describe it as a bit of Indiana Jones mixed with The Mummy, Tintin, and what Peter Jackson was going to do for Kong in 1996. What do you think?

I used to play with Johnny Thunder all the time! Instead of using the existing "storylines" from the sets, I'd make up my own temple/tomb/etc setups and have him adventure through them looking for things like ancient mystical swords or whatever.
