Correction: The long gap on the side of the fuselage, under the red stripe forward of the cockpit, is intended to represent the proton torpedo launch cutout. IMO it does a poor job of this due to its length, narrowness, and rectangular shape (basically everything about it except its position). However it is not a design oversight.

I was planning to point that out, so I'm glad you caught it. Outside of using a sticker, I'm not sure there was a better way to represent them. Perhaps a 1x6 panel that sits at a slight angle inside the frame could replicate the groove, but that would require some extra internal tweaking for it to work at all.

Although I did buy this set I also modified my play scale X-Wing to have it look closer to the film but there is not much you can do with the canopy there either sadly. At least R2 sits and looks better in that one though lol.

I do really appreciate that you don’t have advertisements during the review. Many KZbin videos have become unwatchable due to the number of ads interrupting the flow of the review.

No problem. Turning off mid-roll ads years back wiped out quite a lot of potential income, but like you, I just can't stand how deeply they disrupt the viewing experience. YT just wants to put in too many breaks, too long, too frequently.

Personally even a small amount of ads was too much for me, as soon as I was an adult with a job I've been subscribed to YT premium since it was called Red and never looked back. Really a low low price considering how much I watch KZbin. Honestly the thought of ads on KZbin is almost foreign to me at this point, always interesting to hear a different perspective and validation of my subscription.

I find it strange that there was less love put into the “landed” form of the x-wing. The absence of landing gear really bothers me. When I think back to the original films I always recall the scenes where Luke is gearing up to get into the x-wing and I really loved how it looked on the ground on standby. The droopy wings don’t help the look of it either when they are collapsed

I feel like the many flaws are a result of them rushing to release this set by May 4th. Especially the stand issue, the only way that could've been overlooked is if they saw it, approved it, then shipped it. I'm sure many of us could've waited a couple more months for a more finished and polished set. Something as important and iconic as the X-Wing deserved better for the Ultimate Collectors Series.

Considering they JUST released Luke's Land Speeder last year with the canopy in protective wrap, it's just plain odd they just chucked this one in the box without a thought - I think you are right, speaks to lack of consistent quality processing, which is likely due to rushing and/or running too lean.

Maybe I’m too biased - but I like the smaller “toy” versions of these Star Wars ships. But I also understand the appeal of these larger display models. If you have the space and money - more power to ya :-)

Excellent and comprehensive review. The way the lower and upper wings are connected is the same way the Kenner X-Wing toy was designed way back in the day, I’ve restored a couple and it’s neat to see Lego take this wing approach too.

Absolutely agree about the quality control issues. Slowing down is probably the right thing as you say, but in my opinion in some ways they even need to go back! Injection mould gate marks have become so common now that this once class-leading brand is starting to look like a cheap knock-off. It's really worrying. I have also noticed more and more sink marks, especially (but not exclusively) in technic parts, which as I understand it is commonly caused by rushing the casting process. It has to stop.

I absolutely despise the windscreen being loose in the box, and I’m glad you went into it. The amount of scratches on my piece is very disappointing. If it’s this expensive, please just give us a small paper bag that keeps it looking premium. I wish more reviewers take into account the packaging like you do.

The two little slopes po pout because they are supporting the weight of the whole model. The model visibly sinks a little bit once they pop out, and you have to lift it back up to reattach them. Hardlysurprising they can't hold that much weight. A longer slope with more studs would hold longer, but ideally the weight of the ship should be supported directly by the technic beams.

Yeah, I'm going to be honest, I am completely unimpressed by the use of _rubber bands_ to manage the wing mechanism. I understand why they went with that style of pivot, but when there are so many other stronger mechanisms like ratchets and gears to support something that heavy, it's incredibly disappointing how saggy the whole thing is, as well as how far apart they are when closed. Huge HUGE improvement in the proportions and construction of the fuselage and engines, but the wing mechanism needs a redesign to support the weight better. Using the front-to-back arrangement of the studs to build that central shaft, and allow the wings to all be identically attached is very creative, but the arrangement doesn't provide the rigidity necessary to keep the wings from sagging and flopping around. Side note, I'd rather have a canopy frame built from plates and hinges at this point to get the right shape. The pre-made one has always been the wrong shape, and drives the size, shape, and proportions of the rest of the ship, and I want that to stop.

terrible that you can't put a fig in the cockpit but they scale the R2 to mini scale. A good compromise would be to have a hinged dome printed like R2 that can fold down over the minifig R2 port.

Definitely the best UCS X-Wing (as well as the most recent playset is the best regular X-Wing they made, with that new nose design and S-foils mechanism), they finally got the proportion of the engines right as previous UCS ones had strangely tiny engines in comparison. However, seeing what MOC creators were able to achieve in more or less minifigure scale... Lego could've done better with this one. 4:02 this gap is actually intended to approximate the proton torpedo launcher tube, I think. I'm also one of the weirdos who prefer the X-wing with wings closed.

Hmm I have to disagree with that one -- it's way too big. If you look at the movie props, the R2 head on this model should be larger than it is, but no more than 3 studs. I've seen folks take precise measurements and say it should technically be between 2.5 and 3.

The other problem is that while LEGO bricks are pretty tough, they do wear/stretch a little bit - especially if they are taking a lot of sideways force like those pieces that are coming off the stand. I guarantee that those will keep coming off easier every time until they just won't hold in that position at all.

Well, i have some issues with this set, but am not in the mood to complain, so instead I give a little suggestion for inprovement: put a round 1x1 plate underneath r2d2 and it looks a lot better compared to the size of the x-wing. I usually dont modify an official lego set, but I think this is no dealbreaker. Just use a sparepiece (i just a dark red on). It elevates r2 just enough to make it more believable

It is strange how Lego are willing to make specialized pieces to get a specific shape right, sometimes for a single use on limited sets like the windscreen on the UCS Landspeeder and Slave 1, yet for how many x-wings they make year after year they still have not made a single accurate windscreen piece for those.

My only major problem is that the section from the front of the canopy to the nose cone is basically flat. It’s a simulated angle with plates lowering, but it doesn’t do it for me. If they had found a way to actually angle it down, it would have looked perfect. But, this is still a good set

Could you put a few 2x tech pin in the two beams where those stand slopes are to prevent the two beams flexing in that area? and then bolster the back of those slopes with another flat black tile on the top and bottom of the beam so it has less room to push down into open space inside the studs?

Hi mate. I just wanted to let you know that I really enjoy your honest opinions and to thank you for mentioning that the cockpit is just thrown in loose. I haven’t gotten around to building mine yet and after seeing your review I opened the box to check the canopy and also found that the printed plague is also just thrown loose in the bottom of the box. Thankfully my canopy piece only has very minor marks on it and 99 percent off it came off with a light rub of a micro fibre towel. This set costs $369 In Australia too and like you I find this inexcusable behaviour by Lego to not have this properly packaged to protect it. Oddly the sticker sheet is packed in with the manual in a sealed cardboard sleeve and not loose in the box like so many other sets. Hopefully this quality control issue will get sorted sooner rather than later. (Along with the pieces to correct the faulty stand here’s hoping ).

My canopy cover was stuck between the flat sections of a couple bags and came out of the box cleanly. This was even after turning it over and over in my hands while in my LEGO store. I guess I got lucky.

As usual, great review. I got this on May the 4th, haven't built it yet, but I grabbed it to get the GWPs and extra points. Had I not received the extras, I might not have bought it after seeing how flimsy the wings are, and the stand certainly could use improvement. I'll have to find a safe spot for it where nothing can touch it

Interestingly, the R2-D2 head from polybag 30611-1 matches this thing perfectly. I think I got it in some action, and now I'm glad that I still have it. Makes you wonder why Lego did not include it themselves.

When I put mine together, I put it on the stand, and one of the 2x2 pieces fell off. I panicked because I didn't know where the piece belonged. A quick read of the instructions showed me it was the stand, which was...worrisome. I had some of the issues Jang mentioned, scuffed window, fragile sides, and uncooperative wings. However, it looks awesome.

I got this on may 5th and I love it way more than I always thought I’ve thought the landspeeder was big but it’s tiny compared to it! But no one talked about how fragile this thing is I cannot even pick this up without at least a section or two popping out especially the side panels at the front, I didn’t build it wrong but yeah in opinion Lego should always give up stability for the look for these display sets they do prioritize the look which is good. But yeah it’s an excellent set I just don’t know where to put it I just have it on a random table lol. And I got very lucky with my r2 head. It is wonky , and it will always be wonky but the low part is exactly at the middle front and the high point on the middle back so when you look at his head it makes you think it’s completely straight but yeah this set is just so nice I’m an original trilogy fan so this makes me happy.
