There are missing parts on the 1999 model, it came with a small ''Train'' thing to carry the tools with the Tech guy. It may not change the scores but it would bring more playability and value to the set. It also helps for display and roleplay.

My thoughts exactly. Also the '99 had a 'hidden' cargo bay. Right before the back landing gear, if you remove the two L pieces and that thing in front, you had access to a nice hollow place where you could store the tools from the 'train' if you wanted Luke to take those tools to repair his X-Wing on his adventure leaving the mechanic high and dry without any tools.

2012 in my opinion is my favorite. 2006 was my first X-wing and Lego set in general so it's great too. With that said I can see why I don't like the others as much since they have gray in them

I felt like the original 1999 version was disrespected in this video. He didn't even include the hanger equipment carrier which very much added to the play ability. It came with six tools for the mechanic which could easily be customized as well. To include Yoda's hut but not the equipment cart is a big oversight. Also the original should be given a little more love. For being the first it's very crisp and clean plus unique in it's coloring.

My favorite one is the 2012 version because it's the only one I have(I never got the 2018 because life) and the first Black/Gray TIE-fighter also came the same year which is my opinion the best one(cockpit-wise/mainly personal preference)

I bought 2 big box's of lego for £105 in a car boot sale' as I could see it had a load of star wars parts in it. Anyway after spending over a month trying to figure out what sets was in it and building them, we ended up with 17 star wars ships nearly all the big original sets and close to 150 star wars figures. My son was very happy with them :)

Ultimately the helmet mold from the most recent XWing doesn’t up being more accurate to the screen prop used in A New Hope, as the helmets in the movie were very bulky. I think ultimately the only reason why the newer mold gets so much hate is because it’s just such a dramatic change from what Lego fans have gotten used to since 1999. So even if it is objectively more accurate to what it’s trying to emulate it’s all going to receive a lot of hate to do the nostalgia factor. This is the same exact thing that happened with the new Darth Vader mold that came out a few years back. Everyone raked it over the coals when it first came out saying how it looks completely ridiculous, and now it’s accepted that it looks better than the old molds and it has Become the standard.

It’s so interesting to look back at early Star Wars Lego sets. You can really see that they were just built by designers messing around with bricks. I remember them looking slick and exciting, but by modern Lego standards they look so homemade, because brick/part options were way limited. Builds always have exposed studs everywhere, which became more and more covered up with time. Back then it was rare that they’d implement a unique piece unless it was unavoidable, like the X-Wing and Tie Fighter windshields. Today, there are hundreds of special little pieces that serve super specific purposes. If I was a modern designer trying to recreate something in Lego, the possibilities would drive me crazy. Standards are probably much higher too, because with time and creativity you can really utilize all the special parts that have built up over the years to do a very close recreation.

I don’t know if you realized but the thing on the bottom of the 2018 X-Wing that is used to close the wings is a playability feature. It’s so when you’re swooshing it around you can land the X-Wing and the wings will close.

Honestly the best part of the 2018 model for me was that they finally made the back of the ship look somewhat accurate and at the time lego had a bad habit of not implementing the astromech droids the correct way so it was refreshing to see it correct again!

When I was a kid I almost never used the playability features that were built into sets. I found that the best sets as toys were the ones with the sturdiest designs. I had the 2012 model, and it had extremely flimsy wings that tended to fall apart when you opened and closed the sets, to the point where I used superglue to try and hold it together. That made it a worse toy than the lack of missiles.

I disagree with how you rank your playability. Personally, being more then ten years older then I was when I would play with these kinds of sets. Whenever there were interactive mechanisms like the ones that would shoot or trap doors and such, I don’t ever remember using them that much. What I did with my legos the most out of anything was roleplay. If a set came with an extra setting from the movie and cool mini figs, I liked that set much more then the one which was technically more refined in its interactiveness. But I get it, the amount you can use your imagination with a set is completely subjective so it makes sense that it’s the scoring you go with. I just think you could take into consideration a little more some of the other aspects that play into it. Who knows though, it might just be my nostalgia goggles telling me I like the older sets.

I prefer the Dagobah version over the 2006 version simply because the base model looks messy. So in the Dagobah setting that actually works out really well. But as a clean model it looks too messy imo.

My ranking: 1) 2004 - love the hut and the set itself is amazing and classic 2) 1999 - the only set to nail the light grey look of the X-wing. The structure might not be as good as the others, but as far as looks, it's my second favorite. 3) 2006 - pure classic 4) 2018 - like some of the changes. The engines look cool. The cockpit looks amazing. Just not loving the spring loaded missiles and the helmets look really wonky 5) 2012 - not bad, but never caught my eye.

for me, the 2006 version will always be my favourite.
