LEGO Technic 42099 4x4 X-Treme Off-Roader X-Treme Upgrade!

The new 42099 LEGO Technic X-Treme Off-Roader does lack torque as it can barely make it over a couple of books on the living room floor, so here’s my attempt at upgrading the model by switching two sets of gears over, as described by Racingbrick - credit to him - plus a few practical tips of my own.

Thank you! The instructions were very clear. This thing has some serious torque now. I also replaced the suspension springs with yellow ones, as the originals were way too soft for my taste. 😊

Was considering buying this for an xmass gift but was concerned about lack of tuque in the reviews I watched, In one it couldn't drive across a bed :/ It seems maybe they made a mistake in the instructions and reversed those gears as it clearly works a lot better with this mod. thanks for the upload, seems like someone is getting an awesome gift soon :D

Changing the gears right in the front motor assembly puts a lot of stress on whole transmission. Key is to keep your transmission spinning fast, not slow but forceful. So there is a reason in swapping the last pair, not the first

You have to swap both, the speeds of the wheels would be inconsistent and would put strain on the motors, also this a crawler, slow but forceful is good

There are many examples of lego technic gear-boxes on youtube. Is it possible to integrate one of them into this model, such that you do not need to take it apart to change gears?

The problem is that it would reduce efficiency/power by 15-40%

It's easy all you do is replace the shocks with lego pneumatic cylinders

But i don't understand, It Will upgrade also the speed or just the inclination?

It increases the torque but the top speed is reduced. Without the upgrade it gets stuck on any kind of terrain. You won’t see a benefit if you only run it on a flat surface but this is really not a racer anyway. 🙂

what if you just changed one set of gears? (the rear one) will that change the performance? I mean,idk what happens,I think the front wheels will pull the rear ones but,I don't have the model,I'll get in around 2 months,I will swap both , but,that's just a curiosity

Hi there! I‘ve just finished the complete assembilng considering your upgrade.I think something is wrong. The speed is way too slow and can‘t believe this is the right one. When going, tires are all turning at the same speed. I,ve checked the upgrade and it‘s made right. Could you help me? It is a crawler, not a racer. Does it climb well? Check batteries, check gears are not pushed too tight against other parts so friction high. If you're still concerned feel free to message me on my facebook page bricksmart workshop

That’s right. Speed drop is not as bad as I thought it might be though, it’s just a lot more fun to play with :)

Yes you can do this whilst building by switching the large tan and small black double bevel gears at the following steps: Step 78 use large not small. Step 82 use small not large Step 131 use large not small (2 large gears in this step). Step 145 use small not large
