On the slopes of Mt Hymmetos lay various caves and chasms. One of the most renowned is the Asteriou Monastery chasm cave, which consists of three chambers. The entrance to the first and largest chamber is a small crack in the rocks about 1.5 meters long and 0.5 meters wide. After this crack comes a sheer drop of more than 20 meters to the bottom of the chamber. As a first step to exploring this cave, I designed and built a small mobile crane to lower a bright LED light and action camera through its entrance. The second step will be to design a bigger crane capable of lowering a small and lightweight vehicle to further explore the first chamber of that cave! Stay tuned for more and enjoy!
Cave exploration crane specs :
Tracks : 2x LEGO XL motors
Battery : 3-cell LiPo
Remote Controller : FlySky FS-i6 with 6-channel receiver
Electronic Speed Controls (ESCs) : 2x Hobbywing Quicrun 1060
Crane boom control : 1x LEGO L motor directly on battery pack
Winch control : 1x LEGO XL motor directly on battery pack
Footage was shot on DJI Mavic Mini drone (aerial), DJI Action 2 (cave),
and Google Pixel 6a cellphone (build process and various vehicle shots).

I'm glad you did a mission recap. Because I would have been disappointed otherwise. Yes please continue developing this project to reach the bottom! You will regret it more if you don't try, than to try and lose your vehicle, light and camera. Hope to see the next video on this adventure soon!

I am actually in the pre-design process of the vehicle that will descend in the cave. I'm brainstorming on a vehicle that will use a belt to rappel to the bottom of the cave. No winch-breaking or rope-snapping to worry about. Just drop a 30 meter long belt in the cave and have the vehicle rappel down.

Suspension looks a lot like the Churchill tank during the Second World War. There are rubber studs that you can put on LEGO tracks to give more traction. Had you considered doing this?
@brickandgear
@brickandgear Ай бұрын
I've seen those rubber pads but haven't got any. I don't know if they would work well outdoors though. Some of them would probably get pulled out of place and end up getting lost.
@BrooksMoses
@BrooksMoses Ай бұрын
@@brickandgear : For real tracked vehicles, rubber pads seem mostly useful on things like smooth concrete. I wonder if something almost the opposite, like putting "teeth" on the tracks, would work. I could imagine putting pins through the holes in the ends of the 5-wide track segments, or even pinning a piece to them, but only one every second or third segment so that there are gaps that can sort of hook around small rocks or projections.
@brickandgear
@brickandgear Ай бұрын
@brooksmoses I tried placing black pins on the tracks in the past (before starting my channel). It worked pretty well and the cost of damaging just some pins is acceptable. You think I should start using them again?

One more thing i would try to do is to make a rotor (slash gear) on the botom to at least look around. You could get it done remotly but it would be heavy, but you could also add another, 3rd, 'rope' to use basic spool to turn the camera with relativly not much added weight on the head
@brickandgear
@brickandgear Ай бұрын
I will definitely install a servo to turn the camera in my next vehicle. I am currently in the "thought process" to start designing the vehicle that will descend in the cave using a belt to rappel to the bottom. Very excited for that project!

If it can go through rocky terrain, its capable enough to travel the entire horizontal length of Texas. Just make sure it doesn’t get lost. P.S, how long did it take you to wind up all that rope?
@brickandgear
@brickandgear Ай бұрын
It took a few minutes. I used a gear ratio that would lower the camera as fast as possible because the Action 2 overheats after about 20 minutes of 2.7K recording.

a good first attempt, i look forward to a possible followup. in the brief shot around 7:08, showing us how the shape of the chasm was preventing you from lowering the camera & light further, it was difficult to see how close the string was to the walls of the chasm. i was wondering if, instead of a fixed length boom, an extendable boom like the ones seen in sets 42009 or 42082, would be helpful in maneuvering the camera & light pass the irregular walls? also, the summary at the end of the video was a good inclusion.
@brickandgear
@brickandgear Ай бұрын
For my second attempt I am designing a small vehicle that will rappel down the chasm just like a climber. As a third step, I'll probably design a heavy crane (not portable) that will bring the vehicle back up.

I think more autonomy would be cool. A camera on the crane itself so you could steer remotely like on the ship would be cool, as well as rc controls for the boom and maybe incorporate outriggers! Possibilities with this are endless i wish you luck

Meh, you made a crane.. At this point i would have come to expect an Ai controlled robot that lowers itself from a overhung bridge and able to steer itself away from ledges with its many claws. Naturally, all made from Lego's.

I could also build a B.A.S.E. jumping robot that deploys its parachute three meters from the bottom and crashes spectacularly spreading thousands of LEGO pieces in the cave...

@@brickandgear That would be awful. Just seeing Lego's in the environment triggers some weird response in my brain. They should be kept in a controlled environment, away from the sun, like your room. They can collect dust, minor insect life, bandaids, that just adds flavor. But throwing Lego's, brightly colored pieces of plastic in a natural environment, almost feels like a crime.

@MarijnRoorda

@@brickandgear I do agree. However, you can just leave them lying around in your room. However, leaving them in the environment should be refrained from. As a kid my mom made me clean up my room at least once a year, and i never understood why cause then i would have to get all my Lego's out the next day to return to where i was. There was a very careful weeding out process, all my Lego came in several huge crates, you'd throw it out on the floor, and you start searching for parts. Eventually, at the end of my room, all the good parts would end up, (where the giant spaceships would materialize) and the junk ones would stay at the entrance. (A side benefit was that my parents would stay out of my room in fear of stepping on Lego's.) You can't very well exhibit such behavior in a garden, or a mountaintop.
