What a great axle. If I wouldn't have already designed a front wheel driven axle for my VW, I would have used this no doubt. I may use yours for something else in the future though😉 Nicely made video too btw👍🙂

Dgustafsson13 i preferred your design over All About Lego’s. This was because your design was a much more compact one which i was using for a smaller scale build. All About Lego, i still love your design though 😉

Realistic pivot would have slight camber?
@irushiro21197 жыл бұрын
couse the inner wheel needs to turn more not the outer while steering, you have to turn the inputs to the other side. or was the plan to put the mechanics in front of the front axle ?
@allaboutlego15407 жыл бұрын
In the video, it said the inside turns more than the outside?
@irushiro21197 жыл бұрын
well in several spots of this video it looks the other way around to me, ( flimsiness ... fast truning left right ... bad eyes maybe ) and to be honest, i did not see the whole text on the top, couse i´ts inconvenient to look up and down. i based my opinion purely on what i believed i was seeing. the video and your solution are good.👍

Nice job there. It seems to be at the limit what unmodified lego parts can do. One question though: Is the steering is limited by "the most important parts" and not the cv-joint? In other way: Do you see any (even non purist) way to improve the steering lock?
@allaboutlego15407 жыл бұрын
Thanks! And yeah, it is the 'most important part' which I causing the issue. The only way I could fix it (and make the turning radius bigger) is to have the drive train coming out of the top of the unit, rather than the sides - which as you can imagine, would not be ideal unless you were building a truck... 😁👍

@afoxwithahat78464 жыл бұрын
I thought the Inside wheel turning more leads to understeer and wheel lock
@BlokeOnAMotorbike3 жыл бұрын
no it improves traction and helps prevent oversteer - which on a front wheel drive or 4WD can wear out the front tyres very quickly. The reason for this is simple: the inside wheel has a smaller turning radius than the outer one since they're both moving around the same focus - the inner one is closer.

@allaboutlego15407 жыл бұрын
Jussi Raitoniemi thanks, oh, and just wondering, why? 😉👍
@chriswright60687 жыл бұрын
For one, if you look at an actual steering system on a car, it pivots around the knuckle, not the wheel. For another, steering systems have the inside wheel turn more than the outside wheel as the inside wheel has to make a tighter circle
@chriswright60687 жыл бұрын
Cool design,but not how real cars do it
@allaboutlego15407 жыл бұрын
Chris Wright thanks, yes, you are right, in a real car the wheel does pivot from the steering knuckle, although the wheel is usually placed over the knuckle (in other words, the knuckle is 'inside' the wheel) so the actual pivot point is close to the centre of the wheel. (That is what I have being trying to replicate here). Also, I did mention in the video that the inside wheel turns more than the outside one. 😁
@Klikkitse7 жыл бұрын
Jussi The pivot point is realistic. The play in the system set aside looks like the scrub radius is almost zero, which means the pivot point, albeit virtual, is in the correct place. @Chris Wright @2:14 it says that the steering has Ackermann geometry. You can also see from the attachment points of the steering linkage that it has to have some degree of the correct geometry. You didn't watch the video, did you? The main reason why you would design a virtual pivot point like this with Lego is because 90% of Lego wheels don't have enough space inside to put the steering hardware where it belongs. Especially the smaller wheels (inch or smaller), where the axle hole may even protrude from the wheel, making the scrub radius enormous. And by enormous I mean the wheel well starts taking up space from other stuff and starts looking stupid.
