I’ve been wondering about this for a little while now, and the results are definitely surprising. Thanks for making a video about this topic!

Nice tests Sariel! my only point of critique is the wording of these tests. You are not so much testing the Grip of tires than you are testing for the amount of torque a tire can transmit with the same gear ratio. To truly test the grip of the tires (Stiction) I would recommend having a setup of wheels where they are blocked from rotating and you should test the aamount of force needed to get them from staying in place to draging on the sground surface. Best regards

These videos are quite interesting... Quite fun to have a look at the lego blocks from scientific point of view. I have one comment. There is small bias towards small wheels as bigger wheels are tilting base more-> centre of gravity moves to back -> front wheels looses bit of force pushing down -> less friction force. But still cool phenomenom to observe.
@rickvdstraat2 жыл бұрын
Good observation indeed! Though bigger wheels do have the advantage of creating more torque, the bigger diameter ( and thus radius) makes those wheels turn less for the same distance, so with the same power it makes greater torque. Since the test is about pulling against a force, the extra torque should benefit the bigger wheels. Maybe it evens that advantage out, just my thoughts!
@vaclavpytlik59182 жыл бұрын
@@rickvdstraat The torque would be factor if some of the wheels wouldnt be able to pass the friction barier and instead of sliding on the surface it would stall the engine. On the contrary, the torque is turning power of axle not related to diameter to diameter of the wheel. What differs is the pulling force which is smaller with the bigger wheel if 100% adhesion is considered. But as with all wheels the friction barrier is pased, doesnt make a difference.
@jakubpollak20672 жыл бұрын
@@rickvdstraat Power = force * distance If you have big wheel, its circumference is large, so it have small torque (point at the end travels a lot of distance) Small wheels have small circumference so they have more torque, to transfer same amount of power
@cemmy4102 жыл бұрын
@@jakubpollak2067 I was gonna say this. It's why steam locomotives designed for hauling freight had small driving wheels (high torque, low max speed for moving heavy loads) and ones designed for passenger service had large drivers (low torque, high max speed for moving light loads)

Nice comparison... Maybe some tires were influenced by the change of weight distribution due to the the increase in diameter. Nice video overall

Huh, seems like the balloon tires and the Power Puller ones to a lesser extent, are the only ones with the problem of rims slipping inside the tires.

I seem to recall that vehicle tyres for the real world can be tested on a swing measure, sliding against a grippy surface, with an equal mass for the weight. Do you think that you could go further into this test with the added data or am I just being a colossal nerd? 🤪 Thanks for a fun video, I feel that there is a PhD for you in here if you really felt like it! 😁

Thank you for taking the time to carry out this test. It answered my question on whether I will lose any grip with swapping the tyres from e.g. 42030 to the new Harley Davidson tyres in my battle bot, which I wanted to do, to save some weight. Turns out, I will gain grip on plywood arena!

Nice work put into this, but on concrete and foam the surfaces are not flat, on concrete the end of the tile should have not been a dead end for some wheels-tires assembly. Why just 2 wheels and not a complete setup(car)? I just have a feeling that this test could have been done much better. Also rubber band might have gained some elasticity after some tests if the same band is used.
@jurisflu89302 жыл бұрын
Some better option could have been some 3 wheeled chassis with all wheels driven, so that all wheels always have good contact with surface. Always also put the same 3 wheels.

Man, these planetary wheel hubs are so freaking good. They make stuff so much harder to stop without eating differentials, gears and universal joints for breakfast. I suppose it would theoretically be good for test like this to get the power directly from the p(l)ug? I know it's possible with these olds train control units (I think they are also used in many GBC events), but for MOCs that are supposed to be moving they are kinda uselss. But I don't recall that you owned one of these?
@searme2 жыл бұрын
I've used Ni-Zn batteries, they maintain pretty much steady output until they're completely dead. Besides, the power was not an issue here, the motor never stalled.
@nevimcosem2 жыл бұрын
to be honest, from my POV the test vehicle should have included back tires, because in so many of those clips it is visible that the motor is being dragged on the ground.. other than that inpressive test
@ViperzDesign2 жыл бұрын
These tests all vary in performance since other mocs may be very heavy and thus more weight is pushed on the wheels resulting in grip whereas in light cars they may slip if you understand me it all really depends on your surface you drive on and the weight of your vehicle
@searme2 жыл бұрын
That's why the weight is the same in all tests, only surface and wheels are different.

Hey sariel! I have a question, are you sure some tires would go a little bit further if the camera didn’t cut? Like the pavement section of the 87.9 X 44. Hope you are having a great day!
