A bit of clarification, the famous "Nuts!" response never made it back to the German commander. It just confused the couriers, to whom "Nuts" made about as much sense as "Apples" or "Carrots". The German couriers asked for clarification, and the American courier said, "It means No.". This is the actual message that made it back to the German commander. This incident highlights the problem with using slang with non-native English speakers - the meaning just gets lost.

To those who don’t know: On December 16, 1944, the Germans launched their last major offensive of WW2, intending to split the Allies' lines in two. As the Germans advanced through the Ardennes Forest the Americans were caught completely by surprise and were pushed back, creating a bulge in their frontline which gave the battle its name. The german's initial success did not last, however, and their advance was stopped ten days later as overwhelming numbers of Allied forces arrived. In the following weeks, the Germans were driven back and lost all the ground they had previously taken. The Battle of the Bulge lasted about six weeks with both sides taking around 90,000 casualties each, but unlike the allies, the Germans had drained their resources and manpower and would never recover. -jd brick productions

Well, about the date... There's a bit of confusion here. I should have made this clear at the very beginning. The battle itself began on December 16. But on December 22, the Germans offered the Americans to surrender. And on December 22, the Americans responded "nuts." My animation begins with the Americans already surrounded and on December 23, the captain brings news of the negotiations to the soldiers

@@LCMhistory thank you for clarifying, that is correct. But seeing my grandfather's 20th birthday activated a story I heard from this time. It was late December 1944, and my grandfather has turned 20 already, but he got in trouble for buzzing the tower with his P-38 (the tower was a tent with 20 foot radio pole). A visiting Lt. Colonel happened to be in the tent at the time and demanded to know who the pilot was that buzzed the tower. The P-38 was VERY loud. So he called in my grandfather and chewed him out really bad, then asked his age. My grandfather said 19, and the LTC let him go without punishment because he was still just a kid at 19. Apparently, 20 was man by then. lol. Great video!! Sometimes watching these I forget it's Lego stop motion. You make these intense man. God bless you!

My uncle was is this battle he got shot up pretty bad so bad they thought he was dead. So they threw him in a pile of other soldiers and left him there 5 days later they found him alive and he got fixed up. He believes that becauses he Is partially froze it stopped the bleeding and that saved his life. He got to go home after he healed up. Thank you for the reenactment.
